how do you carry a fixed blade

F1 on my belt in a kydex sheath made by On-Scene Tactical (DOH!) with a firesteel holder, or in my pack.

Can't quite make out the mark..

Looks like a mark 1 mod 0 flying war penis there on the right....

I carry my fixed blades in many different ways depending on what I am doing, but when out treking, I have it attached to me off the belt in a mid rise, so that the handle of the knife starts above the belt line where the kidney is. sometimes I will do a low ride type of carry as well, but I am not a fan of this as it is cumbersome when you have to move fast.

small knives, I carry off the belt slightly canted forward, like a gun.

Can someone post a photo of a "merc harness" in use? I'm not familiar with that one....

thanks,
desmobob

Just completed an in-pocket leather sheath for my Strider MFS that has a belt loop and an O-ring connection to allow the knife to move with the pocket when one sits...

It works astoundingly well... Have some pictures I'll post Monday when I have access to down-sizing my pictures at work.

I put together some real crap most of the time, but every once in a GREAT while, I get lucky and make something that works well... THis was one of those times.

I carry my fixed blade on my pants belt along with my Gerber tool. In my pocket is a Spyderco Terzuola folder.

There are only 3 fixed blades that I carry. My Becker Necker goes horizontal on the belt strong side in the front. My RAT-3 and a Browning fixed blade go vertical on the belt strong side in the back. Ive done small of back as well but it hung up too much on chairs and stuff. Use to use a mercharness for the Becker but I find the strong side front carry more comfortable.

The merc harness is essentially two loops of gutted 550 cord, correct?

Yep, that's basically it. The ones they sell come with some kind of hardware that allows you to adjust them more easily, but you can tie one pretty easily out of a single strand of cord. Just tie a loop big enough to go over one shoulder and leave two long strands on the other side of the knot. One strand goes over the opposite shoulder from the loop and attaches to the sheath, the other strand goes under the shoulder and attaches to the sheath. It just takes a bit of experimentation to get the fit right.

If carrying my Mini Canadian, it goes in a hip pocket sheath designed originally for a Russell Woodswalker.

My Northstar has a carabiner attached to the belt loop so I can carry it as a dangler, which can be tucked into my back pocket or easily removed.

normark, i am really curious about the baldric rig as well...i have seen it a few times here...Doc Canada carries one when he canoes and i think K.Estela has one as well...i think its like a shoulder rig... i am really liking my modified merc type harness....it is so east to access and i dont have to worry about restricted motion as much

Also, runningboar uses one. In fact, he comments about it in another concurrent thread. Making it his way, gives you quick access to a considerable length of 550. Mine is 3-braided. The cord is still available, just a lot more slowly.

Just a clarification - I probably started carrying a FB this way because of canoeing, but it's really the only way I wear a FB any more. I don't wear anything around my neck (maybe I was hung as a horse thief in a previous life ) and on a belt, it gets in the way of sitting in a lawn chair, etc. For me, it is the easiest accessed method of carry while sitting, etc.
I've never tried a merc harness - might have to give it a try. My only worry would be that it makes you look like something out of Soldier of Fortune. I'm not a big fan of tactical looking equipment, mainly because of 'sheeple shock', and yes, I know, you should be able to wear anything you want - I just prefer it this way. To make the harness adjustable, use a couple of double fisherman knots on both sides. If I do it, I'll post a picture of it.

Please do, I would be really interested in seeing it.

Fonly: Is Baldric carry not just a belt around your shoulder?

That's about it Fonly. Works well for me, though.

Dr. Mudd: Gee, I must be behind the times. I just carry a fixed blade in a vertical sheath on my belt and a pocketknife in my pocket.

You must be! :D

Seriously, though, it's not about being modern, cool, or anything except ease of use and that, of course, like just about every other topic here, varies with the individual.

Doc just about summed it up, I do indeed use a baldric and canoeing was also the reason I started. I also carry a pistol a good bit and the baldric across my right shoulder with the knife on my left is a good way to carry a fixed blade and it be easily accessible with a pistol on my right side. Also in the winter I don't have to dig under my coat to get to my knife. Chris

I know I use Baldric for carrying my BK7 in its large sheath. I just didnt know the name. :D

But the Nimravus Im constantly experimenting with it so hard to find the perfect carry, I like it on my belt, but as RB says, I dont like digging for it. But I cant wear it under the arm around town, Its to out there and I know it would bring looks. Not something Im interested in.

Hey Fonly, where you live, don't you wear a jacket all year? :D In which case, you would wear it under your jacket.
