How do you justify a knife that expensive???

I'm sure this will echo some sentiments already mentioned. I like quality, reliable American products that are backed by the manufacturer. And I LOVE the Busse community. I haven't had the pleasure of attending BLADE, but it's on my list. At the risk of flogging a dead horse, the status thing is kind of a moot point for me. I say that because most of the people I know don't care about knives like us, so brands mean nothing to them. And some that are into knives never heard of Busse. Which creates a great teaching opportunity :)

When people ask me questions that I find annoying, I usually just tell them to "play with it." Not the knife. After that they tend to leave me be. Go figure.

True Story:

A few weeks ago, one of my wife's girlfriends was visiting. She asked me why I had 'all those big knives' laying on the coffee table. (I had a total of 5 on the table in sheaths).

She asked me if I was afraid someone was going to break in the house and attack me.

I ignored her for a while, but she kept asking me why I needed so many knives. She was basically asking me to 'justify' my ownership of these knives.

I told her I didn't consider 5 knives to be unusual, and I asked her how many pairs of shoes she had in her closet.

She blurted out 'oh, probably about 100 pairs' - then she got this stupid look on her face. Finally shut her up.

My want, my money, my knife. I am 70 years old and no longer feel a need to justify anything I do to anyone except dream girl, and understanding my compulsions is one of the reasons she's dream girl.

Congratulations, Mike. I hope to God I find my own "dream girl".

Amen.

What do the kids say?

Represent!!

Like many here I buy them because 1) I like knives (seems simple hey) and 2) I can. Beyond that there is no justification needed for me or the Minister of War and Finance (who is also known far and wide as The Princess of Darkness and/or The Poison Pixie depending on who you speak to - she just says..."Oh...another knife").

As for status .... not too many here in Aus knows what or who "Busse" is so I get no points there.

I hear that now an then, "you could buy two of this other knife an buy 3 replacements thereafter" is the argument I heard yesterday..I ended up thinking about it for a while after..after all I found it very easy to justify..an even easier the more I got.. tho the strength, toughness, quality, an warranty are reason enough, It dawned on me that the best part is that every tasks from opening mail to buttoning logs in the forest, become fun as hell!.. it changes the whole aspect of doing work.. its a lot more than an expensive strong knife.

Amen brother...had the same conversation with a buddy of mine yesterday....now he's looking forward to ordering his first Busse after OP2W gets rolling again :D

IF any knife makes you "giddy" just to look at it and hold it, then it's worth every penny, imho - whether it's a $100 knife or a $10,000 knife...i own examples of both, and everything in between...jzs

Easy: three* pieces of customized INFI do everything I could possibly want a knife to do either inside or outside my house, and they do it exactly the way an ideal-for-me blade would do All The Things...so I get to be as overly-invested in those knives as I want. It can't be for the Busse label status, because all three are sterile satin - and the Sus Scrofa and SAR3 are hardly recognizable by blade profile anymore ;)

*I still have a couple other Busses I purchased to use while my knives were off at the CS/Ban/sheathmaker, but they'll wind up on the Exchange sooner rather than later despite how much I like 'em.
