Recommendation? How do you keep the pants bill down?

I've noticed that tactical folders with grippy scales (both sides) are super-popular.

I was checking out a couple shivs yesterday night, and I REALLY liked the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. But when I hooked it on my pocket and felt the checkering grind on my jeans pocket, I knew I couldn't get it. It would put my pants bill through the roof.

I wear pants more than I need that super-tight grip in a street knife battle situation.

In short, I came home with a Buck Vantage Pro instead, mostly because of its smoother profile.

Side note, do Spyderco Delicas these days have that super-rough traction that's gonna tear up my jeans too? My old one from the 90s was nice and slick, but I never had a problem with it slipping in my hand.

Ariat Rebar M4 jeans. They have a knife pocket that doesn’t get torn up as much and also protects your knife from stuff in your main pocket (or vise versa).

I doubt the Delica will tear jeans too easily. Slacks, probably.

I haven't had a lot of issues with g10 killing my jeans, but if I did, I would either go belt or pocket sheath.

My jeans have a similar pocket, and I do use it, but I have found that things tend to fall out of it more easily although there is not as big of a difference if you are using a pocket clip.

If you're gonna wear a belt sheath, you may as well have a Buck 110 or a fixed blade, no?

Pocket sheath slows down deployment; might as well have an old time slip joint at that point. No?

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise: I can buy the FRN-handled Spydies.

My right pocket on pretty much all of my jeans/pants have some sort of damage. Nothing too extreme, but they all show a little wear. Luckily, at least for my jeans, my most carried knives are sporting carbon fiber and Valox, save for the traditionals. Each are pretty easy on my pocket, opposed to G10. That’s one of the reasons I left my mini Ritter stock. Easier to get in and out of my pockets without chewing ‘em up too much. Maybe build a custom one with Valox/FRN instead of G10?

I just remove the clips from most of my folders. Speaking of Delicas, I have two that I carry regularly and neither have clips. Pants pocket edges remain unscathed.

To each their own

I’ve never had a Mini Grip shred my pants pockets. Nor have either of my two friends who I’ve gifted a Mini Grip that they EDC. Think you’re overthinking things...

I have a BM 755 MPR that would tear the hide off an elephant. It has the nastiest grippy G10/clip that I've ever seen. To be fair, BM did send me out a different design clip, but I hated that knife so badly that I never installed it. A gift also, so I cannot sell it. It sits there, brand new, in my safe. OTOH, the M390 blade is a delightful design and obsessively razor-sharp, but I never got to use it. Strange stuff...knife stories...
Other clipped folders have never been a bother...PM2's, Sebbies, Spyderco Slysz Bowie, Bradford AVO, etc.

Worst pocket shredder I've ever had was a Buck Strider spear point. The damn thing was like a cheese grater with a tight clip on it. It would destroy pockets in a few weeks. I just started dropping it in my pocket with the clip on it.

YES !
Good stuff !
Don't change Spyderco.
Some / many have smooth oval areas under the clip; the Endura, the Delica and the Dragonfly for instance. Perfection !

As far as other knives like the Griptillian (love that knife) I use a belt pouch. I would use the Belt pouch anyway with the Griptillian even if it were smoother. It is a thick handled knife. I like thick handled knives. To have more pocket room I wear a clip on belt pouch for many, many of my knives. I use an ammo clip pouch with a velcro flap at the top. I had my two flat ground Ti Lites in it / on me today. Both fit perfectly side by side in one ammo pouch. One blade full length 4inch, the other knife is a shortened blade Wharncliffe. I used them both today

I have smaller clip on pouches for smaller folders such as my Case Trappers. Both these pouches even work on shorts with no belt. SAK / Wenger makes some good ones that are affordable. Even . . . even . . . the "cheep" pouch that came with my Buck 110 Light Weight is actually quite a nice and useful pouch.

Sounds great !
Belt pouch.

cold steel and emerson g10s are the worst. I have lots of jeans with torn loose pocket tops to prove it. those jeans got turned into swamp and grime duty. now I sand* those knives down and bend the clips. no more problems.

so there ya go......

*for folks coming from Google searches who don't know any better......sanding g10 is dangerous. do outside and wear proper safety gear...... lung protections for this and such.

If it was the plasticy handled Gtillian then it won’t really tear your pants up. It is mostly the textured g10 that is hell on pants. How do I deal with it? I don’t. My pockets all are shredded where my knife is always clipped.

However I started carrying mostly framelocks and the clip being against the smooth metal largely prevents it. On some knives you can pull the lip of the clip up to reduce wear and draw your knife that way.

There is one brand of jeans I have seen that has little leather squares over the rear (hip side) of each pocket lip to prevent shredding. (Potentially a cool home project) I don’t know the name though, maybe someone does.

This is the story of my life. Now I need the knife there to clip the pocket to the denim since there would be a hole between the two where the stitching was torn out that connects the two together.

That's exactly how I keep the pants bill down; don't buy knives with abrasive scales. I don't stab through car doors, nor do I have the feeble grip of a toddler. Smooth scales are fine for me.
