Recommendation? How do you keep the pants bill down?

Found a pair of lightweight ripstop pants called "Tru-Spec Eclipse" several years ago. Still sold today in a few colors/sizes. Inside both front pockets is a vertical utility pocket sewn in. Perfect for my knife on one side and flashlight in the other. Like a hidden knife slip that keeps even larger folders up and out of the way of other items inside the pocket. Also keeps clips from getting scratched. Here's a few photos with a ZT0850. Smaller folders simply drop into the utility pocket without getting clipped. Very discrete, comfortable, and easy to access. Long story short, I've had identical utility pockets sewn into the rest of my pants, standardizing my carry system. When the fabric of the utility pocket gets worn or ripped, another utility pocket replaces it.

I have never had that problem. :D

That's ONE way to achieve deep carry!

I noticed that folks are saying G10 or the similar micarta is cheap construction. I don't see it that way. Cheap is plastic. Call it what you want to, but it's plastic all the same.

Everything I carry regularly has a smooth lock side. That’s all I’ve got, if you insist on wearing pants.

I don't worry about clip damage much on my jeans. A pair of jeans literally last me years. I pretty much won't carry a clipped knife on dressier pants. My main concern with clips has always been inadvertent damage to car seat upholstery. Stuff is too expensive just to get a tear in a car seat because you have a clipped knife in your back pocket. I have had clipped knives fall out on front pockets getting in and out of cars/trucks.

I dislike metal sides on folders in general.

We have some very different approaches to this knife thing. I’m reading this going, “back pocket? What brand of barbarism is this?! Right front! It’s the only right way! No metal si- WHAT IS HAPPENING?!”

But, you’re still one of the people here who makes this place feel like home. It may not be nice to single out favorites, but you’re one of mine, sir. Even if you do occasionally confuse me with your differing cultural practices.

The only metal "scales" on knives that I own are (1) A steel sided Spyderco Endura that is fully serrated. (2) A Benchmade Mini Presidio II folder that I purchased this year. It is very grippy. It impressed me actually. I just don't buy metal sided knives for the most part regardless of whether it's titanium or whatever.

I have a SAK in my right front pocket pretty much all the time. So, there isn't room for another knife unless I'm using it and just drop or clip it to my pocket for an easy retrieve as I continue to use it.

Stop wearing skinny jeans!
I had a Benchmade Contego that shredded my work pants pocket in a day. It had to go!!

You guys make me wonder what kinda pants you buy? You guys wearing those new jeggings tight thin pants or what? I have done construction hardcore in my jeans and it takes about three years to wear them out. Crawling on the ground, under houses, on shingle roofs day after day, etc and they dont even have holes in them. I cant imagine a knife wears a pocket of your pants ourlt enough that its a worry. Buy regular manly jeans and dont worry about it.

I wear lightweight hiking pants because I live in the tropics and it has gotten to a point that jeans and any kind of cotton pant is just horrid. Not just the weight and lack of ventilation, but the smell within a day or two.

With that in mind, I do not clip my knives in my pockets. I carry them in my bag or loose in the pocket. I'll admit, Wranglerstar did dissuade me from clipped in pocket carry, just cannot imagine losing a Benchmade 940 in that way. I don't own a 940, by the way. I do have a full-sized Griptilian which has a clip that doesn't even touch the handle. It'll come out of my pocket in a shot if it got snared in vegetation and I probably won't even feel it slide out.

62BC7C9F-CF41-4A0F-A92A-EF2D859D7923.jpeg Few years back I picked up a pair of the Filson dbl Tin Pants and wore/wear them almost daily thru the fall and winter months for cutting/splitting fuelwood and all chainsaw work. Since then having not worn out even 1 pair of jeans I picked up the dbl tin overalls, it solved any issues as far as knife clips destroying my jeans too.
Not my photo.

No they do not, that is the only piece of leather for reinforcement. The 5.11 pants have doubled material for reinforcement and the pocket is square cut for a knife.
Yeah, I have a couple of pairs of 5.11 Apex trousers. Really works for me.

I generally wear slacks or Dickies at work. Pants (pockets)last ~5 years, with daily carry & use. Cargo shorts after work most days, on the Gulf Coast, about the same. Wrangler jeans, at least that long.

Someone mentioned sanding down a ZT0200 scale, that's the only one I've had to go to that extreme!

It is a trade off, on pocket reinforcement. If you add heavy duty material, you thicken the pocket seam, which usually pushes the clip out even more. I'm more prone to tweak my clips for secure carry and smooth draw, before making a lot of other changes.

Edit: Maybe it's my price point? All my lower-body wear is less than $30, save for my marry'n-n-bury'n suit.

I mentioned this earlier but found a picture and thought I'd post it.

I wear Wrangler carpenters jeans or Dickies Cargo shorts or pants about 95% of the time. I run a seam up the side of my right rear pocket and carry a full sized folder there. More discrete than a clip. More comfortable than front pocket carry. Much, much, much easier to access or put away than any clip or holster (imo). Takes about 2 minutes with a sewing machine.

I don't carry knives with pocket clips anymore. Lost too many that way. I carry them internally now.
