How do you pick which knives to get rid of?

I will never get rid of a knife. If my house runs out of room, I will start getting rid of family members befor I get rid of any knives.

I don't sell knives often, but I've culled my collection a couple of times. As I my knowledge increased, and I developed a more precise taste in knives, I found I didn't really like a few of my knives because I felt they weren't up to the quality standard of the rest of my collection. There were others that had features I didn't enjoy at all, for instance I had a half serrated Mini-Manix that I sold because I never used it.

I had stuff from when I was a teenager that wasn't very good, I only kept one or two that had sentimental value. Like my Aitor Oso Blanco, which is just awful but I carried it all over the country when I was young.

Some I gave away because I didn't like them or use them, but they were good quality and a friend liked them. For example, a Spyderco Remote Release I had only taken out of the box a couple of times, or a couple of Buck folders.

I only consider evicting those knives which don't feel "right" in my hand.

The more my knowledge increased the less I got rid of, I was a lot more discerning in my knife purchases when I first started so I didn't buy junk just for the sake of buying a knife, if I bought it, it had some intrinsic value so I see no reason to get rid of it now.

For me collecting knives is like going to multiple Dead Shows, just because I saw a show is no reason to not go anymore, there are so many subtleties in each show, you could see 3 shows in one day and they were all memorable and ask just a little different. So it is with knives, just because I own 1 Barlow is no reason to never get another, there are other variations to enjoy.

So I guess in answer to the OP, I try to keep them all, when I do give away a knife it's usually one that doesn't see a lot of pocket time for one reason or another.

I mostly keep everything, unless I have excess duplicates to get rid of. I usually have to really dislike something to be motivated enough to get rid of the only one I have. The ones that jump to mind that I had to be rid of:

* CRK Sebenza
* Spyderco Domino

I came to the conclusion mid-winter that I am not overly fond of the following:
Assisted Openers
Overbuilt/hard use
Thumbstuds.
Metal handles.
Blades over 3.5"

So, I sold off/traded/gave away most of these.

Since last summer, I've gotten rid of:
ZT0350TS
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Scallion
Kershaw Blur
Strider SnG
LionSteel SR1-A
Spyderco Waved Endura
Spyderco Nilakka
Spyderco Southard
Benchmade Grip and Mini Grip
SOG Trident Tanto TiNi (say that three times fast)
SOG Pentagon Elite I
Bear and Son Damascus Double Edged fighter (never used it in 5 years)
KA-Bar US ARMY Commemorative--Never used it.

If I don't use it, I sell it. Unless there is something "special" that overcomes the above parameters, I sell it.

What I have left:
Benchmade 530--office edc
Benchmade 162--camp knife
Benchmade 585 Orange D2 (recently purchased) all purpose light to medium use (so I plan)
Spyderco Schempp Rock--car knife
Spyderco PM2--after work/around the house knife
Spyderco Manix 2 XHP--after work/around the house edc
Spyderco Dragonfly ZDP--Chicago edc
Spyderco Caly 3 CF/ZDP--office edc
Cold Steel Recon 1 (beat to hell)--Home user and abuser, camp folder
SOG Flash 1 aluminum handle--meets the city of Chicago's blade restriction of 2.5" and under (barely)
SOG Mini Xray Vision (ATS34, 15 years old, beat to hell)--retired beater/office edc
SOG Seal Pup (almost 10 years old, beat to hell)--home and camping beater
Kizer 3404 my girlfriend's, she carries it everyday because its purple and pinkish
Brous Bionic--Office edc
Brian Tighe Mini Tighe Rod--office edc
LionSteel Opera--when I'm wearing a suit or slacks and don't want a clip
ZT0801--home edc
And a DPX HEAT OD on its way, will be an edc for when I'm in the Chicago city limits.

What kind of work do you do with your blades? If a blade is not that useful to your environments, get rid of it. If you have two or more similar blades or knives with the same intended purpose, choose the ones you like best. Which ever blades don't hold an edge, don't sharpen up, has uncomfortable grips, etc, its out.

I am always accepting donations.

Sell them and buy higher end stuff.

10 really amazing knives are better than 100 okay knives.

Then 10 grails are better than 100 amazing knives.

Quality over quantity.

I prefer quantity of quality.
I'm not into trying to be a minimalist sort of guy.
I'm North American to the core, and I like my stuff.
I embrace my materialism. ;)

My collection of productions went from this (not all of my knives at the height of my quantity but close):

To this (for the most part):

and I couldn't be happier. Don't miss any of them (0560 and 0561 don't count because I still have a 0560cbcf laying around).
