How do you pick which knives to get rid of?

Don't miss any of them (0560 and 0561 don't count because I still have a 0560cbcf laying around).

If you don't miss them, cool. :)
I, on the other hand, am a tad different from that.
My wife tells me "No!" any time I even talk of selling or trading a knife, even to get another knife...because she knows I'll just end up tracking it down again later, usually paying more than I did the first time around.
(she's right, I do that)

I ain't got time for that!

There are so many knives out there, I would rather try something new than re-buy.

The only knife I have ever bought multiples of was the 0560. The only knife I have ever considered buying again was the Benchmade 940-1 (I had a 943) but I don't think that even counts.

Only knife I can see myself buying again in the future is an Olamic Wayfarer because they are so varied and I sold mine for other reasons than not liking it (baby).

Step 1: Add up all of the individual prices you paid for the knives and get a total.

Step 2: Realize that you ACTUALLY spent that much on knives.

Step 3: Understand that you could have 80 percent of that money back and still be quite set as far as knives goes

Step 4: What step 4? Problem's already solved. Youve just sold all but a few of your knives and are now makin it rain

Imagine you have 4 different boxes;

One is a beautiful, expensive box for storing your most valued knives, the knives that you think are more valuable than what you paid, and wouldn't really consider selling.

Second is a slightly less expensive, but much more practical box for storing your favorite EDC's, or your knives that aren't necessarily worth much in value, but are worth something to you - ie, user knives, interesting designs, etc.

Third is a common wooden box for storing the ones you aren't sure about yet (Ie, the knives you haven't gotten a chance to use or think about yet.).

Fourth box is for the remaining knives. After you've assigned a box to all of your knives, take a look at the ones in the fourth box, make sure that they are in the right place, and then consider selling or giving them away. The point is to make the value you assign to your knives more clearer to yourself.

My collection of productions went from this (not all of my knives at the height of my quantity but close):

Very nice collection and thanks for the pic this trend needed one. But let me ask you this; When you go running which one of thoes do you carry? The WH that might bounce out of your pocket? When a coworker needs a knife co you lend him your crk? Working in the yard is it the Hinder that gets used to pull out a stubborn weed? I think I have so many because I have one or two for each job. I also have a lot of doubles because as soon as one gets very dirty I wantva clean one of the same.

I like this idea. Thanks.

What's up man? Personally, I've been through a number of knives. Bussekin, Strider, Hinderer, Customs... ect. I love knives but moreso I love using them. I had ( ummmm...have) a drawer full of knives that rarely see the the light of day. I have also come to realize that those knives are basically money sitting around that I could spend on things I'd use on a regular basis. I've sold them to buy gun parts, ammo, audio equipment, outdoor gear. You name it. Anyhoo, the point is I had to decide, in a big way, which knives I can get rid of to fund my other interests.

I've had the good luck to have been able to own a slew of knives, primarily due to the enablers on this forum. What made my decision easy was being able to own a bunch of knives and figure out what works for me. I've found that no other folder works better for my use than a Spyderco Military or Paramilitary. I've owned larger Busses and other fixed blades but found that generally use my Cold Steel Kukris or HI Kukri more and they cost less than half the price. For smaller knives I prefer puukko or bushcraft style knives with carbon blades. Nothing wrong with a Mora for a beater, plus, great for learning how to sharpen! Figure out what works for you and go with it, maybe you don't know what that is which is totally cool. Knives generally retain their value well, especially when bought used. Try out as many things as you can. A lot of it is snakeoil, tacticool or collectibility... I've been there. Narrow it down to maybe 6 folders ( Geeeeeze... ) a couple good utility knives ( ie... Mora, Fallkniven) maybe a couple larger knives ( Bussekin. I like Swamprat) and a good axe or hatchet. Good luck.

The solution was in the first reply, post #2:

It doesn't get carried? No sentimental value? It either get put up for trade, sold, or given away. :)

I find it fairly easy to determine which of my knives just don't float me boat. They do absolutely nothing for me, and I never carry them or even consider carrying them.

I give them away (here or elsewhere) or trade them (normally a gunshows). Some that do float my boat, I give away to friends. Recently I got a good deal on a knife so I bought two with the intention of giving one away on BF. Mailed it off not long ago. The last couple of weeks, I've mailed five. One just yesterday to a friend I haven't seen in 5 or so years and whom I've met face-to-face only twice. Sharing, especially amongst friends. It's truly the best way. Best for all concerned. I've received so many free and unexpected gifts and treasures in my life, some from people I've never met face-to-face, I feel it is just right and proper to follow the example of those who have been so generous to me.

I have a guy at work that ALWAYS wants to buy my old knives. When I want a new one, I save up a little then sell him one I don't want as much as the new one to make up the difference. Nice little system I think.

No problem man.

I personally try to only buy ones that I know I will never want to sell. My tiny collection is all knives that have different aspects of the knife world that interest me. Different steels, handle materials, designers, manufacturers, pocket clips, lock types, blade shapes, etc. When Im looking to buy a knew knife, I have to like it, but more importantly it has to bring something I dont already have. For instance: ZT 0566. Did I really need it? My thought process was that I was getting these things my collection didnt already have:

Hinderer design
Flipper
Elmax
Lock bar stabilized frame lock
different blade shape
ZT brand
robust, larger knife for harder use

If you only buy knives that add significantly to your collection, youll never need to sell any and you wont have a collection the size of Texas

Heres mine:

I keep the ones I carry and use, if I don't use them I sell them and buy new ones I think I'd enjoy. I'll also keep some for the novelty, whether it be design or locking mechanism, as long as there not worth a large amount of dough.

Running? Running from the cops? Why would he be running? Just joking. But on a serious note I ran enough miles in my youth that I'm plenty fine with my daily walks. Lost 15 lbs too.

As for yard work, my Hinderers or sebenzas get the nod. Just used my 3" slicer to trim some branches two hours ago. I bought them to use not to collect or sell later.

As far as someone else using my knife, I don't think so. Not to be mean but I'll cut something for you or you can buy yourself a knife. That person obviously sees the value of having a knife but for some reason doesn't feel the need to carry their own because they can just borrow someone else's.

To the OP. If the knife brings you $X enjoyment and you can sell it for $Y then as long as X is greater or equal to Y then you have your answer. Personally if I don't use it and it doesn't have sentimental value then I sell it or trade it.

Scurvy, that is a great selection to choose from. That 0777 looks smaller than I thought they were. Also, is that the "baby Scurvy" sebenza? Saw you grabbed a special one from CRK. Both of my sons were Friday babies so no CRK with their birthday. I did think about having one made with their 5th birthdate (around when they would start school) and giving them to them when they graduate.

If you can't remember the knife, it probably wasn't special and could be sold. My $.02, never had this problem...then again I don't own many knives.

This. If I was a runner, I would have no doubt carrying my WH. The retention is great and you don't even feel it in the pocket. It's my go to lightweight carry.

No issues using any of those around the house of in the yard. If anything is particularly tough or really hard use, I'll pull out my 0560cbcf. It's my beater.

And no one borrows my knives unless I know for a fact they know what they are doing.

The 0777 is about the same length wise as the large Sebenza. It's noticeably taller though. The only reason it looks small is the perspective. I lined them up shortest to longest so they would all fit in the frame from that angle. It's not a straight down shot. You can tell from the weave being much bigger at the bottom and much smaller at the top.

And yes, that is the baby Scurvy Sebenza. It's my only CRK.

Out of my collection I would say 10 out of the 13 I have.... I know for a fact they aren't ever going anywhere. For those 2-3 that I feel like I can live without.... they eventually end up being sold. In fact they are for sale right now. I think sometimes we all go through that phase where we want to "downsize" and I think it's a very healthy thing to do. If you think about it... why would you want 100+ $100-200 knives when you can have 10-15 really nice ones?

If you have 100+ knives you're obviously a "collector" right? So why not collect something worth collecting?

Only when my back's against the wall and I need the money do I see fit to liquidate any of my sharp things...:D
