How do you rate Benchmade on a scale 1-10?

For me probably a 7 or 8. It's a production knife company. I don't have the expectations that some others seem to have. I've never broken an omega-spring. Never had a need to send one back. Retail price can seem steep, but lets not kid ourselves, who pays retail...

I'll keep buying them :)

I'll give them an 8, same as I'd give Spyderco.
I love AXIS; a lot of their knives EDC and slice really well; f&f has always seemed great to me.
OTOH, there is a sameness about their models that knocks them down a couple of pegs for me.... there's the big black frn/black G10 folder, medium black frn/black G10 folder, medium big black frn/black G10 folder, slightly smaller medium black frn/black G10 folder, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. It's hard to get too excited about knives that are all about the same, give or take an inch of blade length or handle length or whatever.
But AXIS just kicks ass, period.

8/10

I think their prices are fair if you get them from the right websites. They almost have no knives over $200, excluding gold class.

I'm a recent convert to the holy order of m4, m4 be praised.

The 950-1201 forum knife m4 steel, m4 be praised, CF handle and polished split arrow clip. Not only looks classy, after a solid reprofiling of the m4 blade, m4 be praised, I started cutting everything in sight, only to find that dulling the blade was significantly slow, so slow that I got bored and started sawing on my 400 grit whet stone and after a minutes of rigorous sawing into my stone it still cut printer paper... A metric held by many of an edge that's sharp enough to take to work.

My conversion was immediate and total, there is no hype, it's amazing steel.

I say all of that to illustrate that I buy what I like and every year Benchmade makes knives that I like, they use steel that I like with shapes that I like, I've never had an omega spring break.

I do wish they would sell Omega springs and that they would sell blades too, but it's not my call, they have sent entire sets of replacement screws and pivot pins because of people who have stripped clip screws.

Some of the red class knives I wouldn't use, same for some Spyderco knives that are pinned together.

I rate them a solid 9, my latest purchase came from the factory with an edge that wasn't up to my standards for evenness, but was sharp enough to use, cleanly shaving hair, no snags.

I would've said 6.5 even though I may own more Benchmade's now then any other brand but after getting a few more knives from them and dealing with customer service I'd say 8. Nome of my Benchmade's have blade play, all came shaving sharp but one and that I sent back and when it came back it became my edc. I don't think they are overpriced as I have never paid more than $230 on a brand new benchmade (including limited runs of the ares and afck in m390). But having as good of customer support as they did really made me feel good and change my mind on them.

I have lots of knives from other brands but I'm a Benchmade fan and I'll go with 8 for my ranking.

I have three Benchmade knives. A Bone Collector, regular Griptilian, and now a 710 m390. The Bone Collector came immaculate and razor sharp, the Griptilian had a MINIMAL horizontal blade wobble that was gone with a minimal turn of the pivot screw and still opens like butter, and the 710 had the blade MILDLY off center, also fixed very easily with a torx wrench. Nothing that I haven't seen from other companies as well, nor something that either they or the retailers that I purchased them from wouldn't have been happy to rectify free of charge should I have chosen to go that route. I've read about shoddy fit and finish and dull, unevenly ground blades in past years of Benchmade but never seen anything like that in person at the knife/gun shop. The ease of use with the Axis lock is fantastic, but the springs do add in just one more thing that can go wrong with a folder, and I am a big fan of frame and back locks.

I would give them a 6.5 out of ten when comparing ALL knife companies, but I think comparing production to custom and pseudo-custom companies might show the productions in a poor light. It's a little like comparing large batch blended Whiskies to 12 year+ single malt Scotches. They both produce some delicious flavors and get the job done on a Friday night. There's just something that makes that Friday night even better when you have a couple fingers of an 18 year old peety libation in your glass.

For the production big Three of Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw/ZT as far as their folders go on a 1-10 scale I'd be hard pressed to rank them one above the other based on my experiences. They are all very responsive when contacted, and stand by the products they put out. I own the three Benchmade with current plans to buy two more in the relatively near future, quite a number of Spyderco, several Kershaw and the ZT's that hog a whole lot of pocket time. My personal favorite is the Zero Tolerance side of Kershaw, so I might give them a personal edge in the ranking(my 0300 has even been used to pry/chisel/torque a sliding bolt lock out from the wrong side of a heavy wooden door and frame when some half incoherent drunk jackass couldn't figure how to open the door he had locked at the bar I work at) :

Kershaw/ZT: 9.5 because of the ZT'S, and for the range of offerings at all prices, and the willingness of customer service to go above and beyond even when something is not normally covered under warranty.

Spyderco : 9.2, with a great range of products and stellar customer service.

Benchmade: 9.15, with a wide range of products, wonderful customer service, though a bit more stringent on what is covered with warranty (I imagine that they were burned in the past, and adjusted their policy based on the experience with some schmuck ). Just a small ding because if one of my omega springs ever snapped, I'd rather be able to receive replacements and do it myself rather than mail the knife out, not that I forsee breaking one, much less two at a time in the near future.

Can't speak to many of the other companies out there, but these three companies have been impeccable in my experience, and I'll continue to give each one my money several times a year.

Huh. Long post. Damn boring work nights. ;)

I have had 3 problems with knives I bought from them:
1. Fixed blade with uneven tip grind (100$ knife)
2. Folder with Uncentered blade (blue series, 130$ but don't remember the model)
3. Blade play on another folder (100$ blue)

Their custom service is terrible too.
That being said, I love my mini grip with the olive green handles and axis lock!
Overall they are a little overpriced, a little lacking in fit and finish. A solid 6.5, no bad but not great.

Oh.. And it's likely that two of my next three spendier knife purchases will be Benchmade: another 710, a Contego, and a new 0560.

while i give the company an 8 out of 10 i give the , mchenrey & wiliams, osbournes, auto persideo's, conteago etc..... 11's out of 10's. they as a company make my favourite edc's. i have a benchmade 710 mechnrey and wiliams with m390 steel kick a sebenza out of my pocket. what can i say. the knife carries well, eurgnomic, good blade design, solid construction and cuts like a deamon. overall they make my favourtie designes buy i would love to see better out of box grinds, better fit and finish and i wish they would ship out parts to you so i dont need to send out a knife for 3 weeks for a screw fix or a new springs and washers.

They sell blades. $25 for satin and $35 for black

What you said is true. I also have and appreciate knives form the other top production companies and would give them all high marks too.

However, having used Benchmade knives for many years I have to say I've yet to see the equal of the Rukus, Skirmish or AFCK. Period! Not yet anyway.

And if you look at some of the current offerings like the Contego and Adamas I think they too will hold their own and over time archive similar status of the knives mentioned above.

The 710 and Rift are also in a class of their own.

Like I said I like and have many different brands and will buy more in the future but when I look at what I have or have used, in the big picture over many years BM really has made a great impression and I have to give credit where credit is due.

I'll give them an 8. I've only got a couple (a 180 Outbounder and a 375 Adamas), but they are good knives. That Outbounder is one sweet little blade. I wish they still made it - I would buy a couple more.

First knife I've ever owned was a mini grip and it set the bar fairly high for me. The lock up was rock solid and I loved the axis lock. Sadly I lost that knife and haven't gotten around to getting another one so I guess there's no point in me giving them a score.

I was about to get a 940 but I recently got a new job and the 940 might be a little too large to use at my new office so another mini grip may be in the stars.
