How do you store/display your knives?

The best solution I've found.

I like this. Where'd you get it? It looks to be well made. Can you store thicker knives in there?

Look up "wooden machinist's tool chest". I think the one mentioned above is from harbor freight but there are a lot of them around.
Mine came from a yard sale and would be perfect for knives if I had more to store. Each drawer is about 2 inches deep and the top is a bit deeper. Works well for my smaller pieces of handle materials.

I store mine in a larger Kershaw knife carrying case, with the removable Velcro 'pages'. It's pretty useful, and I'd keep it locked up in a cabinet daily, only having the knife(knives) I'd be carrying that day out, but after a few months, constantly unlocking and relocking the cabinet, and putting each knife in their designated spot got a little tiring. So, now I keep my EDC rotation knives out on a paracord clothesline on a wooden shelf I set up. Along with knives, there's pens, OC , some knife maintenance stuff, notebooks, gloves, lights, lighters, leatherman, etc.
I can't take credit for this idea, as someone sent me a picture of their set up on Instagram, but they used one of those $5 shoe organizers you hang behind your closet door to store their knives and other EDC gear. I checked my local IKEA and they were out of stock, but you've got a choice of black or white for $5!!

I have a designated spot for them on a book shelf. After a while almost all of them end up on my computer desk.
I tend to flick my knives while watching films and I pass by the desk before leaving the house so it's a good place to pick the knife of the day.

I actually just purchased a clear acrylic jewelry storage shelf-top box in order to keep all of my EDC rotation steel and flashlights in. We have this awesome huge storage solutions store near us:

I posted the link because I figure this item isn't something that's sold by any of our vendors, so I don't think it would fall under a deal-spotting infraction. Let me know if I need to take it down.

For those familiar with Virtuovice, then you have a mental pic of how I store mine. Cheap tote bags hold many knives, and can be stacked nicely in the safe, all while allowing easy access. But I use 98% of all mine, so I don't mind storing mine this way.

As much as I like some of the displays being shown, and admire their ability to absolutely light up a room, you need to be wise concerning who you show your collection to. A deranged POS thief could have those display cases stacked up like a pile of books and out the door in about 2 minutes or less. Then the crying will commence, which will lead to an emotional scar on your conscience that you wish you never had. LOCK UP YOUR KNIVES!!!!!!!!!!!.

The counter point to this is that it's mentally draining to live in fear of losing your prized possessions. I can't speak for others, but I have many thousands of dollars worth of possessions in my home. Collectibles, artwork, and so on. One specific category is electronics. I have thousands of dollars worth of personal electronics (actually more money spent there than on my knife collection). LCD televisions, seven or eight game systems, laptops, tablets, and so on. What am I supposed to do, lock everything up in a safe? I DO lock up my guns, because I'd be devastated if someone came in and stole my firearms and then used them to commit other crimes. But my knife collection? I bought them to use, and I like to have them out where I can admire them. So, to be polite, "LOCK UP YOUR KNIVES!11111!!OMG11" just doesn't match my mindset. Now, I only have a few customs which if I lost, I'd shrug and feel bad about losing them, right up until the insurance check came in and I bought more. I can understand how folks who have a huge collection of custom knives might feel differently about this topic than I do.

If we're going to put a bunch of explanation points on something, how about "MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HOME INSURANCE!!!!!!!!"? I think that's more realistic (for me, anyway).

That said, I WILL agree that it's smart not to just have strangers into your home and show them all of your nice things. No telling with folks these days.

I said nothing about living in fear. I did make mention to be wise on who you let around your collection. And I don't know how many insurance quotes you have got for knife and gun collections, but the ones I have had are pathetic. Yes, they will cover theft, but they will only cover up to a max amount that is determined by the average homeowner. The "average" homeowner only has 3 or 4 guns, and a handful of knives. That's what Insurance companies will offer you. They wont even comes close to covering you entire collection if you have a good sized one. They will on the other hand cover TVs and electronics due to theft if you have what the average homeowner has. I doubt you have 20 flat screens and 30 laptops or the like laying around. That's the differential. The only real insurance policy for a gun and knife collector is an expensive quality and Heavy safe. But I suppose you could have the Insurance company fabricate a special policy for your collection, but be ready to pay dearly. But like I said I do admire a room decorated with gun and knife displays, I think their amazing, but I just wouldnt feel responsible if I had my whole collection arrayed like that, because nobody will take up my slack , (especially an insurance company) for my lack of responsibility.

I have a pretty stout insurance company, and my knives and guns are covered to my satisfaction. Now, 90% of my collection are production knives, so again, I could completely understand a different mindset if I were one of the members here with a large collection of irreplaceable customs. If my knives were stolen, I'd simply take the insurance check and buy new ones. They are all replaceable. Now, a lot of my comic artwork IS irreplaceable, and I carry a level of insurance commensurate with the risk of theft or fire. Also, I do not mean any offense by the term "fear" although, I understand that folks' natural inclination is to immediately deny it. Fact is, everything in your house can be stolen while you are gone at work, to include your safe. That's just how it is today. If you let yourself get into a mindset of "This is super valuable property, I need to lock it up in a safe!" where does that line get drawn? If I could live in a giant safe like Scrooge McDuck, I absolutely would (especially if it came with a swimming pool of money an acre deep!), but that's just not realistic. So, if you want to lock your knives up for fear that they will be stolen, then that's fine. But that's not necessarily advice for everyone, which is why I responded.

Anyway, we're derailing the thread, so I'll bow out of this line of discussion. I'll post up a pic of my class case once I have it filled out and sorted for display to keep my next response on topic.

As I said it has nothing to do with fear, not at all. Logically it has to do with "Insurance". Personally I think you should call your "stout" Insurance company and get a clear understanding on what they will cover under your Homeowners policy. Unless you have a special fabricated insurance policy specifically for your guns and knives, they are only covered up to a max amount determined by the average homeowner. They will not cover entire collections for a full replacement value like your are stating, unless you have a VERY specific separated policy from your homeowners. I am stating facts here that some people might want to know, you are not.

Ok, man. Thanks for setting us all straight.

The OP was inquiring about how do people store/display their knives, which is a perfectly legitimate question. I mentioned how I store mine, and also stated how I really enjoy display rooms. Display rooms with guns and knives are absolutely outstanding and I enjoy being around the like, ( kinda like a mini museum ). But the "storage aspect", which is the other half of the OP's question is what I was commenting on, and giving my reason. The reason of why, is perfectly relevant to the question. If ones like displays for the format for their collection, then awesome. I like them too. There are pros and cons to aspects of almost everything. Glass displays VS Safes are one of those things. One must weigh the pros and cons of a subject like this if someone is new and looking for advice for starting a collection, and how to store/display them. Knife collections grow, and keep on growing. Eventually one will amass a huge fortune in a collection over the years if the collector has a real passion for the collectables he or she is collecting.

I use the Kershaw carry cases. Each case holds 18 knives. They are easy to take to shows and to move in and out of the safe.View attachment 463341

I have one of those and it just fell apart at the stitching. Very strange too because I never overloaded it or put anything other than a few Kershaw and ZT knives in it.

I just keep mine in in my safe with my guns. It keeps my collection's insurance premium a little cheaper. The knives and guns are on the same policy so that why I keep them together.
