How do you store your traditional knives

I think I have about 16 +/- traditional pocket knives. I keep 4 or 5 of them out handy as they are my frequent users... The SAK Farmer and Pioneer, yellow Sodbuster Jr, my beloved yellow Peanut and of course, The One - my red spear/coping 77 Barlow.

The rest are laid out neatly on the upper shelf of my large gun safe in the living room. When I want to change the line-up then I'll pluck out one or two from the safe and replace them with ones I have out. I don't display them or anything like that.

Unfortunately I've run out of space.

My collection is still very small, I only have seven traditionals and a couple of modern folders, so I just keep all of them out on my desk so I can look 'em over and grab one in the morning. Once I run out of desk space I'll probably get one of the knife rolls I've seen a lot of other users storing their knives in.

I use an oak machinist's tool chest. It has quite a few drawers, some petitioned, all velvet lined, a velvet lined front cover that lays down flat and slides into the body of the chest, or folds up and covers all the drawers. It also locks and has a diamond shaped mirror in the underside of the lid. I've been well pleased with it.

Yeah this is gross overcrowding! Could even constitute knife-abuse or denial of basic rights.... Send them here, I'll re-home them:D:D

Some very good examples there, you should be proud!

Folks, this is a every-once-in-a-while forum question. I used the search function and searched the forum for 'knife storage'.
If you need some reading time go back to the pre-2010 threads an skim forewards for ways to store or organize you knives.
There are many interesting tales and photos of the way people take care of their knives. 2010 and 2011 are especially rich. The use of the search function is underutilized by newer forum members. I talk about this constantly over in the forum I ride herd on......300Bucks

I mean no disrespect and agree that the search function as underutilized, but you want forum members to refer to 5 year old threads for information? Every knife topic has been discussed to exhaustion on the forums. That would mean not one new thread is ever to be created. If we are to always reference very old threads, how do new ideas come about? How does new technology get discussed?

I was looking to see this thread played out for newer ideas before the momentum was stopped so your guidance is appreciated.

Thanks!

I agree. All forum topics are cyclical. While there are some threads topics that pop up with annoying frequency, like, "What's the BEST sharpening system?" or "Are Case knives any good?" this one, in my opinion, is not a bother. Furthermore, I have very often used the search feature without finding the SPECIFIC piece of info I was seeking, even though the general topic had been covered on several occasions.

In their original boxes (when possible), in locked cabinets that are too heavy for crackheads to carry off, inside a locked room, in a dark cave... :D

Is it a bad thing to store a knife in its leather sheath?
The tannins in the leather can adversely affect certain materials over time. I have a beautiful Boker lockback Hunter that has been in its sheath off and on for almost 30 years. When stored in the sheath the brass bolsters oxidize where the sheath touches.

For my vintage and carbon steel knives I have an old silverware box I use, they're designed to protect silverware from tarnishing and I'm sure they'll protect knives from rust, you can get them relatively cheap from antique shops and places like that

In my temperature and humidity controlled safe next to my firearms and CRK's of course!
