how does Frost Cutlery make their knives so cheap?

What's the market for these knives? I'll tell you a quick story:

A few years ago, I met a man that sold knives at gun shows, knife shows, etc. He used to carry Spyderco, BM, CS, and other higher-end and higher cost knives, but, he would also have a box or two of the cheap, "under $5" knives for sale as well. He told me that after a while, once he sold out his stock of higher end knives, he stopped carrying them all together. He would sell $3k in the cheapies over a couple hundred $ worth of the quality knives at a show.

He only had so much room for product and decided that it would be more profitable to sell and display the cheapies. Especially at gun shows, he would get a lot of dads and young sons walking through the show. Dad is focused on spending money of a gun or 2, and saving his money for that purchase. Young boy sees one of the flashy craptacular knives and begs dad to buy it for him. It's under $5, so it's no big purchase for dad and keeps the kid happy.

He said he loved the higher end knives, and he actually buys them for himself, but his business dictated that he sell crap. Sad.

Including the belief that everything in China is made by Jesus-loving slaves in forced labor camps.

Because they are made in China by political prisoners in large factory prisons.

Here is the scenario:

A Chinese Christian is caught with a Bible, they sentence him or her to life in prison doing forced labor producing substandard products for WAL-Mart and Chef Tony to sell to Americans.

Yeah, I see what you mean. You were quoting him pretty accurately there. ;)

Well I shouldn't have really posted that...like everyone else Atheists are allowed to believe whatever they want to its just not right to post your anti-christian thoughts on a knife forums where there is just NO reason to express religious beliefs...especially in a negative way like that tasteless comment...What where you thinking when you posted that? Did you think that with as many Baldeforums members there are along with guests that no one is christian? You had to have thought your post would stir up some controversy...Am I wrong?

Lets try to keep the forum about knives and not religion...But I DO appologize for my comment it was no better than his...I was just shocked a little when I read it thats all...

The moderators have taken action. We can get back on topic now.

Good to hear...Ok lets see, oh yeah Forst...Well they are cheap knives, yes they will cut, and yes they are made out of metal, and yes they can be as cheap as $1.61 in these kinds of sets, but NO they are not going to last very long, and NO they are not safe to handle if your lookign to cut anythign more than a shirt string or maybe open up your mail...Letters anyway, Im not sure if I would trust one with a good heavy duty carboard box...lol:rolleyes:

I think I'm getting some for Christmas. Which suits me just fine, because I'm actually curious what a $1.50 knife is like.

One of them melted in my backpack when I was at summer camp a few years ago. The plastic handle melted. Melted. Enjoy.

LOL, when I was younger (about 14 years old) I ordered a knife lot from the knife collectors show, it was $99 plus shipping for something like 68 knives...I loved the designs since I didn't own many knives at the time anyway and I displayed most of them in a display case I had, friends loved to see them and I ended up selling them all over the course of about 4 months, I made money on them but only used 1 of them to actually cut stuff, and it worked fine for about a week and then I went to open up a padded envelope and the liner lock failed on me, good thign I didn't get cut, but the liner just bent down into the frame...I threw it out....Never ordered another thing from the show....but I am thinking about getting a steel warrior set, not sure yet but I have onkly read good things about them, seems to be the only knives on the show worth buying at all...

I've got a few frost knives and they dont seam that bad...i wouldnt want to go all 'tactical' with them since i dont trust liner locks in general, and the bodies leave something to be desired, but for cutting 'stuff' they seam OK.
The blades on all my frosts are pretty aggresive cutters and i've shaved hair with them. Not wonderful but ok for the price.
On the other hand the steel warrior (also frost i think) slipjoints i've had have all been GREAT for the price- i had to belt sand the blades to get them to an edge i like but they keep it pretty well and are good little pocket knives. Not as good as an Opinel...but not much IS.
I guess its all down to what you do with your knives-i generly just cut food, string, cardboard boxes and stuff like that...nothing too heavy duty.

I've found steel warrior to be OK for using- I use the saddle hord 2 blade most of the time and its GREAT for the money. The spay blade on the saddlehorn is way better then on the trapper-nice stright slope towards the edge makes it a good slicer (works well on cheese, foam matting and heavy plastic mat)
I've read that some people dont think the backsprings are up to much on this line, but i make sure that i dont 'saw' with a slip-joint anyway.
The SW line can take a real good edge iI've found, and they seam pretty well made.
I dont think to much of frost liner locks (Or the lock in general) cool for using but i just dont trust them.
