How is everybody?...

Truck fired up no problem - SWMBO's car was not amused.
about 1:30 I drove to the PO, picked up a package, then went back home and scraped the drive - by the time I was done, it was up to +6F!

First, let me say that it was soooo. Kind of you Screwdriver to mention that your pupper felt it important to seek shade.......LOL.......

Hey Vik ..... Glad you are doing Ok. Please give my best to Miss Tara........

I think things are gonna be OK here....... Good fire going of mixed red oak and beech throwing cheer.....I have a pot of chicken, broccoli and rice soup in the making and am about to have a wee aperitif of some of my home brew port infused with cherries and raisins....... So as long as the juice remains on I am good to go........ Long live the grid.......

Hope you all stay warm.......

Ethan

The other end of the state is doing pretty well. Was a high of 7 today. Really windy but thankfully no real ice/snow/power issues in this neck of the woods. Hope everyone is fairing as well.

A good 24 Celsius (75 F) here. I sometimes forgot that its winter over there for you guys...

By the way, does it snow in every part of the US?

Well, it snowed several inches in Jacksonville, Florida in 1989, giving the city and surrounding area their first white Christmas ever. The only state I would say that has never received snow is Hawaii.

My appologies as i missed this one... I'll give a recap of the last few days at my house in newfoundland... We have had a harsher then normal winter so far with lots of snow on the ground already but on friday evening a winter blizzard rolls in and doesn't let up until late saturday... Winds were 100 km per hour and we got 40 cm of snow.... We had 4-5 ft drifts around the house.... On top of that friday the power company started rolling blackouts due to limited power availability... Saturday morning there was a fire at the secondary power station resulting in 200k people losing power including my famy of 4. Temps at that time were minus 31c with wind chill. Luckily enough we do have a small generator that can run a few lights, the fridge and blower motor on wood furnace.... The draw back is the genny has a 1 liter gas tank (1/4 gallon) which lasts about an hour. In order to keep everyone here warm and safe i spent the last 2 nights up till 2am feeding the fire and the generator and then again up at 6am to start it all again. Early this morning power came on with the good news that another weather system was moving in...... Warm temps and rain, 20+ mm of rain. I live at the bottom of a hill so i am expecting water and lots of it so i started up the snowblower and spent the day clearing as much snow away from the house as possible. It has been a rough few days and tomorrow will probably be a crap day as well but everyone here is safe and sound and i got to spend a few days splitting wood with my bk9 and bk2 for the furnace. Also i had so quiet time with the family and due to the cold temps very very very cold beer!

We did open our home to our neighbours during the last few days to those without heat as I strongly feel that we should always help others when possible. Granted they didn't all enjoy my bbq burgers but the warmth was greatly appreciated.

P.S. Really need to get a generator wih a bigger gas tank!!! Lol

Actually, it snows on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (Big Island of Hawai'i) irregularly..due to the altitude, not the latitude. Still, there's a snowboarding report.....

Driveway was, by no exaggeration, 1.5" of glaze ice. I knew I should've bought skates. Or another BK7 so I could lash em under my boots! Cold and foggy all day here, and now the wind is picking up.

I found it amusing that tonight at about 6 when I had to pick up my car from the mechanic's place that the whole inside of my windshield was frosted over. I had to actually use my ice scraper inside my vehicle. I was not about to wait for it to warm all the way up before I left. Temp on the gauge was showing -9 and that was the highest it got until I got home.

I'm off work this week - paid, since I've been there 20 years - so I don't need to go out driving in this stuff.

you need to rig up an auxillary tank that holds 8-10L -- put a T in the fuel line with a shutoff valve on each leg so you can run the genny off one tank while filling the other.

Hey Wildnewfie.....

You seem to have had the worst of it......... Boy, when the juice goes out things change in a hurry....... Glad you weathered the storm..........

Ethan

Almost all of us are totally dependant on the "juice". Cold here at 5 degrees F this morning. But not nearly as cold as locations to the north and northeast. Wind has died down here. Stay warm.

-14 here in Indianapolis right now. We received about 15" of snow this weekend and the travel restrictions were just lifted for our county yesterday afternoon and the county South of us this morning.
My fiancee nor myself had to work yesterday due to the travel restrictions, but since those were lifted yesterday afternoon I will be headed out before long to warm up the truck to take my fiancee into work. I have doubts her car will start reliably in these temps and I would rather her not to have to drive on the icy roads. Because of this I was planning on going in late to work, but the boss called me this AM and told me not to come in today. Fortunately, our power in the apartment complex has kept up, but that can't be said for many people in the area.

I haven't had a chance to experience extreme cold temps before, so I decided to bundle up and go for a little walk yesterday down to check the PO box. I enjoy the cold and It was a nice little walk, but wow....
I did learn that in -11 F, a small beanie under a Carhartt hood was woefully inadequate. The top of my ears were purple. I dug out a good knit hat to wear out under my hood for the next time I had to go out.

Ethan, did I mention that for three days I have stayed in my PJ's??? When I must go out the insulated coveralls go on and I'm
back in the house as quickly as possible. Today I'll break the trend - need to go to town. Heat wave in progress at +7 degrees. Being retired and in good health is a real blessing.

Living in SoCal I don't have to deal w/the cold/snow/"bad weather", but growing up in MI, I sure remember the drifts and piles of snow we'd get in the 70s. My parents enjoy opening the door while Facetiming w/my sons to show them the falling snow, the build up, and the icicles.

I had family back there w/out power for several days, and they were luckier than acquiantances. I too hope everyone stays safe, fed, and warm!!
