How is hunting season going?

Sorry for the total thread hijack with my Africa Safari. I suppose I should have started a new thread. Thanks for all the positive comments.

I've seen absolutely nothing on the public lands here in Indiana and only some too young to take deer on the private lot I have access too. Last year there was much more movement. Plenty of bow season left but not sure I'll get to use my rifles. Rifle season is very short here.

Spending a few days hunting with my oldest son Mace. So far we have not seen anything but really it is more about the time with him. He is almost 18 and as he grows I feel that these opportunities will become less frequent. If we don’t see a deer the entire trip I will still consider it one of the best hunting trips ever.

I hear ya Garth, my daughter told me she wants to go deer hunting this year.....she's 14.
I was very happy for her to ask that!
I love spending all the time I can with her.

Wants to hunt and she’s a horse girl. You must be doing something right. Horses, hunting and Busse knives, you have expensive hobbies. I know the feeling. Last I counted we have 18 horses at the farm.

Thank you, Garth
I really appreciate that. She's a great girl.
& you my friend, have it made 😎

I saw no bucks during deer season nor elk during elk season this year. I am processing another hog in the morning and 40 chickens next week, so my freezers will not be wanting.

Morning all, Happy belated Thanksgiving to all my American Neighbours!!

Its like the deer have disappeared…
But, even a bad day hunting is still a darn good day!!!
Good Luck everybody!!!

So far so good here. My son Mace got his first deer on our recent trip. I got 4 so far between Ohio and Kentucky. Haven't made it out yet for Ohio gun season but the freezer is stocked so if we don't get anything else it has been a successful season.

Best of Luck to all of you,

Garth

They still appear on the trail cams though.

Ummm... I know of some freezer space available....close by :D

But DAMN! Tentex! one hell of an adventure! Thanks for the photos! I had a customer who did these hunts. He was kind of a big deal in the big game thing - He got all the big scores and groups and hunted the 7 continents. Visited his place where he had his hunt room with all the mounts. Watched movies and looked at photo albums and all the other stuff and things you collect. But he wasn't a gun guy, he took everything with a recurve or longbow, that was his thing. I really enjoyed your photos because it took me right back to thinking of my old friend who passed on while back. Thank you for sparking some great memories, and dude, you had an epic experience you'll never forget. Best of all, you supported a vital economy so important to preserve these animals and their habitat. My buddy explained a lot about that to me. So mad respect brother, cause from those stories, I have a pretty good idea of what you did and what you experienced, and it's no joke out there and I'm grinning ear to ear going through those pics right with ya man. ... Now, just curious what you think, but imagine for a moment, instead of that H&H it's a primitive longbow and wooden arrows between you and a cape?
Salute! And EXCELLENT photos too, thank god the photos were amazing!

24 yards with however you are going to take the Cape is close enough in my book. I do have a Matthew’s bow but it never crossed my mind on my first Africa hunt. There are some specific Safari outfitters that cater to archery hunters and my PH has guided them as well. The biggest thing in hunting on the African continent is to select a PH that will protect you with their life.

To become a Professional Hunter (PH guides hunts) in ZIM it takes a minimum of 4 years. In this 4 years you are basically an intern to other Outfitters and also assist in the neutralization of problem animals. My PH took 4 years to get certified and as part of their final examination they have to lead a party of their piers and board members on a week long expedition in the bush. They have to make camp, toilets, obtain food and water. But above all is to keep others safe.

I have no hesitation trusting my PH with myself or any of my family in the future.

I highly suggest this trip to anyone on the fence!

My friend explained that "yeah, I've got a bow, but there's a few 375's pointed at the bad stuff if something goes wrong - Yes, you put your life in their hands. But he hunted a lot of things without them as you have to in Africa I believe? He told me a story and had photos of battle, tracking a musk ox tracking for 2 days. It was some real Grizzly Adams shit, but had the pictures and the hide - All the times I visited him I was just, jaw on the floor drooling and wide open eyes LOL!

Been seeing pictures of some coworkers kills this week...the season here in Bama is finally starting to show some decent deer, it was real slow for bow season this year, probably because of unusually warm weather

Wow as others have said that is an incredible trip of a lifetime. Congratulations on getting to go and experience all of that. What a 10 days.

It's been a tough season so far. I've put in the hours, no one can argue that.
I have gone to hunting only with a recurve over the past 3/4 years, and my tags aren't getting filled near as fast but my enjoyment, peace of mind, and sense of accomplishment have gone way up. I just hunt whitetails. I've got most of December to hunt, so plenty of time left to fill more tags. I've passed on a number of does with yearlings or younger fawns. I'm lucky if I kill three a year; usually it's two.
I completely missed my first chance, shot over a big fat doe's back by easily six inches. She was maybe seven yards away and I have a glitch shooting low enough that close from a treestand. The next day I killed a good 8pt at about 20y. He was a good deer and it was a good shot; he never even ran, just walked a bit, stopped, and folded over.
I managed to stalk a doe on the ground inside 20 yards; I had an easy broadside shot, but somehow couldn't quite believe I had gotten that close so easily, and so didn't even draw. She looked up and blew and bolted. But that was a success for me.

Found this today. Made me reflect on my trip.

Ernest Hemingway with Buffalo
 Africa, 1953

"The buffalo has courage, vindictiveness and an incredible ability to absorb punishment," Hemingway wrote to Esquire in 1954, though he noted, "I cannot the buffalo as comparing in dangerous possibilities to either lion or leopard."
