How long is long enough for you?

My current EDC is 5.5 inches, and I think that's about the limit of what I can carry comfortably.

3 is perfect but I carry anything that is 3 to 4, over 4 its time for fixed blade.

Hi Kyui -

I prefer a little larger blade than most, but I would submit that for many, the size of the blade may be a function of local laws.

For instance, when I am working in Chicago, I have to carry a smaller blade due to the local regulations on knife carry.

I would say that regulations are probably why manufacturers favor the smaller blade lengths as well.

best regards -

I'm schizophrenic when it comes to blade size. Sometimes its a big honker like a 4.25" Spyderco Resilience, and other times is a smallish SOG Twitch II. For 99% of what I do, a 3-4" blade is probably best. My test is whether I can cut a donut with it, without a struggle.

3.5" blade length is pretty much the longest blade length I will carry (as far as folding knives go). Even with fixed blades, anything more than 4-5" tends to feel very ungainly to me.

I also like 3.5-4" blade, handle is not very much concern as I have small hands. However, for daily use, 3" will do. My larger EDC is 3.5" currently. For food prep, 4" is better.

So the consensus here seems to be 3.5-4" by preference, but limited by law. Lucky me, law here is ambiguiis and no blade length. It onpy forbids 'sharp weapon' which is pretty much up to LEO interpretation and how one present oneself.

Wow better you than me... I would always struggle to cut a donut, I usually can't make it to the table without finishing it, let alone considering cutting it :)

I like between 3-3.5" for most things EDC. For EDC, I like to be able to really choke up on the blade for finer tip control

A Military seems big enough for me. After that I'd prefer to use a fixed blade.

I have to say, the Spydie Military is my favorite knife for military duty. Friend of mine took his over to the sand box. There, sand gets into everything and the autos we get issued are a pain to clean. The Millie on the other hand just required an air can or brush and it was read to go. Plus the size could take on anything.

Hey, my EDC is a small 2 3/4 swiss army. I am short (5'8") so a long knife doesn't feel right in my pocket. My son is 6'3, and he carries a 4 1/4 inch Frost Cutlery monster! He has the long pockets to carry it.

Upper limit is about 3 oz and 4" closed. It becomes too clunky beyond that (deep pocket carry). Lower limit is 2". Below that it starts having trouble with my "manila envelopes and electrical tape" test.

That being said, I'm experimenting with the Victorinox Classic to see how little a knife I can get away with. I'm finding I don't really miss the blade length, appreciate the nail file, but really miss the scissors on the larger models.

Ideally, I'd like a 2.5" locking blade with the biggest pair of scissors that can fit in it.

My rule of thumb is that it has to be able to cut all the way through an apple. So 3.5-4" is my usual. As Cynic said anything smaller makes cutting fruit more difficult.
I cut my apple a quarter at a time to minimize them turning brown.:D

For me I'm a 2.5" guy even with fixed blades though I do really like my 4 inch Spyderco Military. It's really the only blade I carry over 2.5" on a regular basis.

You'd prolly like this knife I just finished today. I call it the Urban Skinner. Has a 2" blade.

Nice knife CM!

I go for 3.5" to 4". 3.75 is about perfect. I'm more than used to the Endura. More like bonded.

since i live near towns and cities etc.. and not in the jungle 3-4 in is just fine for the biggest baddest cardboard boxes and plastic ties .. i guess if i lived on a farm or in another country or wide open space id probably carry a fixed blade on a belt sheath .. probably be carrying a gun also :)

can you please tell me what that is , its very attractive!! wharncliffe is my favorite blade.
but to the original question.. i prefer a small 3 inch ambi liner lock knives. and it just so happens the kershaw is available in a wharnie.............but nothing nice like the above.

thank you
joey
