how low can you go... your favorite, cheapest, high value folder?

Cheap - high value? Used. Buying any knife new is a loss. (If you don't believe me sell the one you just bought for the same or better price. That's how you set value.)

Still, sometimes it's worth it just to own a nice new knife.

But what's "high" value? Worth 10X what you paid? You'll have to wait a long time to prove that unless you look at used knives.

I think the question you're looking for is, "What knives are a good deal at their price point?" Still, the answer has to "used".

Here's a nice Case. Paid $15. It's easy worth 5X that.

Here's a French Sabatier chefs knife. Paid $18. Somebody just sold one on ebay for $225. I think that I got good value.

Here's $30 worth of used knives. Put a little time into cleaning them and they'll sell for a lot more than that. Or put an edge on them and you'll never have to worry about having a knife in the car, the toolbox, the garage, the junk drawer, etc. And they're all American made. Nobody worries about loosing a $5 knife...

Keep buying all those new knives. I'll look for real value elsewhere.

I'm pretty poor these days and am finding knife rescue a great part of this hobby. Just got a Schrade 80T at a brick and mortar shop for $20, USA made. I think that is a bit steep compared to what I've paid for many used knives but the thing looks brand new.

Then I think "What would I get for $20 if it was brand new?".

Anyone have a solution for the following problem please help me: Just got a SRM 704 recently. Disassembled the whole thing (though the hex screw gave me a hell of a problem, like most other people with most SRM i guess). After reassembly, I really could not get the smooth-as-butter blade deployment back even after countless tries of adjusting the pivot screw and the six others on the handle . I even adjusted screws for the clip to see if they affected blade deployment.

Kershaw Compound-$18
Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite-$22
Cold Steel Tuff Lite-$28

I had to mess around with the Compound's pivot to get rid of some side-side play but it's pretty solid now (just a hint of a wiggle). The larger Tuff Lite had some grit in the action and a wee bit of side-to-side. I took it apart and scrubbed everything out and reassembled. Now it's smooth and has zero play in any direction. The knife has no washers, just little washer shaped molded protrusions around the pivot holes inside the scales and I think a bit of grit (whatever it was) must have been between the scale and tang. I've been edc'ing it constantly for a few weeks and absolutely love it.

I say delica. you can get one for around 50 and they are great beater knives, I really like vg10

For a new and unused knife, Opinel is hard to beat.

Pick your lucky number and go with it (if your lucky number is 13, you are in for a big treat:D)

I think my carbon #6 cost about 8 bucks, and it out-cuts everything.

Plus, there are almost endless ways to modify them to your liking.

Nothing less than about $150. Not saying I'm right; just is what I'm interested in.

My Kershaw Chill and my Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter were both about $18. I'm more impressed with the Kabar, but the Chill makes a great letter opener with its narrow blade.

I got lucky on a spyderco UKPK with the foliage green g 10 and s 30 v blade (golden made, and a GREAT knife) and paid 65. Not cheap, but good value for a really wonderful knife. and the skyline is pretty great for 30 bucks. Another popular choice, I got a foliage green spyderco ambitious at 38, and it is really a great knife. Great QC, hard to beat without going up to the endura, and even then, no g10 (bring back foliage green g10/ffg endura/delicas!!)...

edit - sonny, in the 150-200 range I think the Sage 2 is my favorite (what can I say, I like Spyderco QC), and it does get carried more than any other knife I own.. too many good choices.

Great thread OP!

I'm going to go with the Enlan 01 flipper. I'm pretty sure it doesn't rip off any specific designs and its is on sturdy, good looking folder for 15$.

I saw this electrician's knife in a local hardware store. For around $2 it's pretty solid and has excellent geometry.

Both of these were dirt cheap and well built. The Kershaw is a better cutter but the Gerber is tougher and tolerates abuse better.
