For me, it's 3.

Military
SMF
560 (although its at the factory for warranty work)

I don't think I can justify getting any more. Plus I've been debating about selling my 560 when it comes back, but I'm not sure about that yet.

How many do you have?

I own way too many!About 100...Being older now & hopefully wiser I carry a small pocket folder.

:p C'mon now, it's us you're talking too. You're not really going to make us all count 'em, are you? Check out the pics of some of the collections here, it'll blow your mind.

I don't have an exact count but I would say almost 100. I have old folding knives I used to use, new folding knives that I rotate for EDC, a collection of custom fixed blades, and a good number of real cheap knives that I've picked up here and there. I could easily get rid of half of them and not miss them, maybe I could get down to 1/3 of that number if I really had to but I don't have to.

It's not about the numbers, there is no limit. You have to justify the numbers to yourself and to your budget, but not to anybody else. If 3 is enough for you then fine. If you want 4 or 5 or 10 or 100, buy them if you can afford them. You don't have to justify them.

I can justify a lot more than 3, although right now I do have more user knives than I really need. That doesn't mean there aren't more knives that I want and will get when I am financially able to.

A 'few'. Around 450. Difficult to say exactly. Even though my catalog records are up-to-date and are numbered to 430, some of those are sets.

Some seemingly high counts are simply a reflection of how long a person has been collecting. Take for example, someone 40 years old who started collecting when they were 10. If they bought on average only one knife per month, they would have 360 knives.
The focus of a person's collection would also impact their total count. If someone seriously collected a particular custom maker, for example, knife availability would be a serious limiting factor. So would budget. On the other hand, if someone aggressively collected Old Timers or Swiss Army Knives, why wouldn't they have 20, 50, or more?

I honestly have no idea. You lose track of these things as time goes by. More than a hundred. Less than a thousand. Probably.

Wow! I wasn't expecting numbers that high. Do you just buy every model a company makes?

I can't think of more than a handful of knives I even would want to have, most of them just don't appeal to me.

35 folders. An unknown but lesser number of fixed blades, probably right around 50 total. I'm going to bookmark this page and have my lady read it the next time she gives me a hard time about having more knives than anyone needs. :)

I lost track...and quite honestly have stopped counting...it makes the monetary aspect of it all less depressing...(all the guns I could have bought with that money instead :D )

A whole mess is as close as I can figure.

3 knives only? You don't have any in the kitchen?

If I were to venture a guess, probably a couple hundred.

And I'm adding to it daily.

I just love knives, never met one I didn't like. Some I don't understand, but if theys pointy and sharp, I like em.

Me? Well similar to the hypothetical example I described, I've been Accumulating / Collecting for over 30 years. I specifically collect Old Timer knives, the original USA-made Schrades, which are common and usually affordable.

The other factor that affects my count is the size of the net cast, the very wide variety of knives and bladed items that I'm interested in and enjoy owning, or have been at one time or another over the years. Traditional pocketknives, hunting knives, khukris, bayonets, survival/outdoors knives, Scandinavian styles, interesting locking and opening mechanisms...

But you're correct too in that if I had to pick 300 current production knives to buy today, I'd have a hard time finding that many I really wanted. Even with the Old Timers it's getting harder and harder to find models and variations that aren't already represented in the collection. But I'll find a couple this month, a couple next month, and a couple the month after...

I'm the same, I never met a knife that I didn't like. I think I have about 700 but I am not really sure.
