How many of you go without a multitool?

On recent hiking trips, I've taken to carrying a LM Skeletool on me and a LM Charge Ti in my pack.

I switch back and forth from a SAK Camper model and the LM wave. I do carry my multi more but, I'm fine with either one.

I'm constantly surprised at people balking at carrying 5 oz of a very usefull tool when they are very likely to are several, if not many pounds overweight.

But maybe that's just me.....

:D

I'm slowly growing to like your way of thinking more and more. You have a knack for pointing out the painfully obvious and invoking thought.

I don't worry about weight all that much. Normally when I'm out on a hike I carry everything in my pack for both my wife and I so I am used to the few extra pounds on my back. I look at is added resistance for the workout. So then maybe I can lose those few extra pounds. :D

when i have a bag for EDC i carry a small pouch inside with several goodies, including a small pair of needle nose pliers and a small pair of scissors.

i also carry this same goody pouch in the woods, but haven't yet used the pliers in the field...i know that when i need them though i will really need them.

i do sometimes also carry a two layer SAK for EDC in my bag, it just ends up in there somehow. i almost never use it though, i mostly just use it for keeping in my pocket when i'm swimming to make sure i have a knife.

I take a SAK out in the woods, but never a full multi-plier like a Spirit or Leatherman. I've never found a need for the fullsize pliers.

When backpacking, I've been careful to note what things I seldom use or don't use at all. After a couple trips, they get left behind. My leatherman was one that didn't make the cut. My back, knees and feet appreciate the lighter pack very much thank you.

The leatherman is now permanently located in my glove compartment.

If I'm camping out hunting, fishing or bicycling, I always carry my Wave. It is particularly handy for pushing in and pulling out the very small stakes that secure my Big Agnes Seedhouse 1 tent. I realize most of the tools on the Wave won't see use on a typical camping trip, but I like the idea that it also has a pair of back-up blades and a wood saw. The file once saved the day on a long bicycle trip.

It's heavy, but it's handy!

I just returned home from an eight-day, 400-mile bicycle trip and I carried the Wave (in my tool bag), a Spyderco Native (clipped in my cycling jersey pocket) and an Opinel #8 (in the food bag).

It's getting so I carry the Wave quite often. I also bought one of the little (Squirt) tools with small pliers that I carry loose in my pocket a lot.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The most important task my Wave performs is removal of hooks. Since most of my camping is also fishing, it never leaves my side.

Seems like the only use for the multi-tool by other posters is for pot holding and splinter removal. They make a very lightweight pot gripper for camping and a splinter/tick tweezer which would be a lot less weight. Probably not too good for fish hooks. I have five multi-tools from very small to industrial size and none of them hits trail with me.

I carry a LM wave and a SAK "hiker" along with a FB or here lately I have been leaving both the LM and SAK home for the Swiss champ & FB . I really like the SC SAK....has everything the Hiker and LM combined and weights a few ounces less the the hiker & LM combined.

I carry a Wave M-F at work. The Wave is just way too handy for work. It replaced a much bigger tool kit I used to lug around. But when I get home it comes off, and I carry a Rat Trap the rest of the time.

Kind of self explanatory but was wondering how many of you guys don't carry a SAK or Leatherman type tool in the woods? I've been playing around with different combo's and the full size Wave just isn't working for me. I'm basically going out with a P4 and a Ritter Grip, along with fixed blade etc.

I alway carry a SAK, either a 91mm custom Woodsman or a 84mm Jumberjack, but I always have them. LM style Multitool it totally optional, I dont really care if I have one or not.

Recently got an SAK Farmer, and have been carrying it a lot. It gets a ton of use at work and around the farm. Not so much hunting and fishing, but it is still useful. I carry a dedicated pair of pliers almost all the time. I carried a Leatherman for a while, but I found the pliers were too weak for my use and the knife wasn't all that great. A good pair of pliers is very light and you can get a nice belt sheath for them. I actually consider my pliers a more important EDC item than a knife unless I'm hunting or camping. Fishing, the pliers are on the same level as a knife.

Here's one of my most useful and valued multi-tools --I actually have two of them-- that a lot of you guys probably aren't familiar with. Yes, it has a knife blade.... http://www.topeak.com/products/Tools/ALiEN_II

I wouldn't go for a bike ride without one! I have mounted on both my bicycles.

I used to carry a multi tool , did for years , but not for the last 7 or so , just a knife or two .

I carry a pair of pliers in my pack tho .

I have a generic type leatherman that is really of good quality. Mostly carry it when fishing`. It has a nice pair of needlenose pliers, fish scaler ,good file and a nice knife for gutting fish. MY edcs are a Kershaw Chive and a SAK officers model. If hunting I like all the above plus my Buck 119 or my Voyager X2.

I'm just too much a Neanderthal I guess, since I usually have a multi-tool AND a SAK (usually an Outrider or Farmer). I will admit that for a very lilght-weight hike, I would still probably take my Farmer and Leatherman's tiny P4 pliers...it's 2 ounces; I know weight adds up, but that's pretty small in my book.

I'm really surprised! I keep a Leatherman of one kind or another within arm's reach as often as I can. When at home, I usually put one on my belt; at work, it's in my briefcase. I'm switching jobs, and one of my first conversations with my new supervisor included my question of whether a Leatherman-type tool would be okay. (It is.) (New employer is a government entity with some law-enforcement aspects and metal detectors at the entrances, so it wasn't a sure thing.) I probably end up using the Leatherman at least once per day--anything from pulling staples from lengthy legal documents to getting sparks from a firesteel. I'm pretty convinced that it's about the one thing I'd most like to have with me if the SHTF.

Oh: as somebody suggested, I've also taken to cutting thin strips of duct tape and taping large-eyed needles and small fishhooks into the channels the various tools fold out of in the multi-tool handles. Just another way of having handy gadgets at hand when you need them.

I have no problem carrying such a giant, ultra heavy monstrosity  in my pack. When I figure all the extra gear I pack, it doesn't add up to much.
