How many of you need to get burned by scammers before you learn not to use Paypal Friends & Family?

Or continue to use F&F and eventually you'll be here.

The big problem with the new tax is that records simply do not exist. Even if you diligently managed to keep every receipt for the last 40 years, what are they going to read? Most of them simply say something like “knife” and “$250.00”. Most knives do not bare serial numbers and even those that do exclude that information from sales receipts.

What we should do is to create an archive of generic purchase receipts that our members can access and use for their transactions. Sell a Randall 14, access the receipt and use that as the historical purchase price for tax purposes. Even if audited what could anyone prove? Unlike firearms there is really no standard for knife purchases and there is no way to prove that your model 14 wasn’t the one shown on document.

If it smells illegitimate just remember that dealing with an equally unethical tax that confiscates collectors property without any real legitimate recourse and tacks on 20-30% to the cost of just about every collectibles transaction. The government simply deeded to itself that percentage of your collection by fiat.

Stop using Friends and Family. Just stop

If you insist on doing so, why aren't you requiring that they show you positive ID, like their driver's license with today's date, then a face pic of them holding said license & the knife, before sending money?

I'm sick of seeing you guys get ripped off.
I looked at the last couple posted and it was gmail. That would worry me right off the bat because whenever it is an obvious scam on FB Marketplace it is a gmail address. I have no idea why though.

I use F&F for exactly what the name implies, friends and family. I'm not sending money to someone I don't know without some sort of protection. I understand seller apprehension with Paypal dispute practices, I've never had occasion to dispute a purchase.

Death & Taxes - Whining & Complaining - all part of our human condition :( For the most part - the kind off knives/goods people are talking about selling here are not antiques, without supportive financial information. As much as I hate it too - though I have most of my receipts for past knife purchases - I now MUST KEEP my receipts if I intend to sell knives and goods. It's a minor PIA but not such such a burden - mostly just offends my sense of self determination. IMPORTANTLY - if I show the loss I don't pay the tax. Keep your receipts! I hate regulations about building permits too.

Blah blah blah about the American Rescue Plan - as if this is the problem. It was just the IRS finally catching up with the states. Here in Maine, it seems, we practically have the tax collector at our flea market table making certain we charge the 5.5% sales tax on our old and well used galvanized buckets, rotary phones and hand woven floor mats, etc. eBay, Amazon, Etsy, et al, have been charging state sales taxes for years. WE ALL HATE IT but it is what it is and no election cycle will ever change it. Governments collect taxes. I'll really be PO when I need to pay tax on a hair cut. Stand by though...

Anyway - G&S has such great insurance value that outweighs the needs to keep your receipts. Yeah some people will get burnt in any case but G&S, for the most part, is PROTECTION from fraud for both buyer and seller. Going on 12 years with thousands of $$s of transactions without a glitch. Could not have done it without PP. And, yes, with those members I have come to trust or call my friends - we relax our rules. Make friends on BF

To end my "rant" I leave this LINK to INFO on the how and why's of the tax regulation that took effect this year.
I completely support Spark's recommendation - use G&S.

My colleague Boru13 Boru13 moved a post earlier involving politics that doesn't belong here. Since folks can't seem to keep it out of the discussion and we are going around in circles saying the same thing over and over, we'll close this one for now.

Know your buyer / seller, and act appropriately and responsibly to protect yourself, your money and your property.
