how many of you use a mill for making guards

Hi Folks,

I actually am developing another approach altogether for my guards and fittings right now though...lost wax casting. Are any of you familiar with it?

Thanks again for all your input!

All the best, Phil

Hey Phil,
Any thing you want to know about lost wax casting Stacy or I should be able to help you with, Stacy does it more, so he would be a better resource, but i do a couple runs per week

Thanks Page!

I used to do quite a bit of it many years ago. I've just been trying to ramp up the equipment again. It's pretty much all come together now: a little burnout oven, vacuum invester / gravity assist caster and a centrifugal caster. Much of it with help from Stacy.

Now I need to develop techniques for creating the handle hardware in wax. I like the idea of using the tang to melt the hole through the wax model for a REAL SNUG fit. In fact, the one I've tried ended up just a bit too snug via the shrinkage of the solidified cast metal (silicon bronze). Got any suggestions?

All the best, Phil

I found the best thing is to cast a bit too tight and file to fit, but you should be able to figure out your before and after dimensions and adjust your wax to compensate for shrinkage
