The folder you carry every day and use, what is the most you will pay?
I am a cheap skate, a knife is a tool, If I can not get a reasonable folder for around $20-$40 US dollars then I doubt I would buy it.
With the net you can get the best price possible. I have several CRKT folders that may not be the rolls royce steels but they are well built practicle knives.
I LIKE sharpening blades so having to touch them up now and again is not a hassle.
I have a couple of Kershaws same thing, great knives did not remortgage my house and not scared to use them.
Everytime I have bought a knife, I have not been 100% happy with the sharpness and had to give it a tune up, in the process I have scratched most blades that would make them unsaleable or worth less than I paid.
Big deal, I bought them to be used, if they are strong and hold up then my kids will get them and appreciate them when I am gone.
Having knives that are "New, Never used, Unsharpened, etc is different for me, like a stamp collector that fawns over his collection.
The difference is, a Stamp collector is closer to an Art collector.
A Knife collector is closer to a Mechanic, the mechanic uses his tools to do a job.
A knife is a tool.

Well, The most I would spend on a knife for edc is around $200. When you like Bali-songs one has to step up to the higher quality knives. If you buy a bali for $30 or so, it will break within a week. I edc balis such as BM31 and Bradley Mayhem, and I also edc knives suck as Buck 112, 110, and the 560(titanium 110). I just dont abuse my knives, and When I am working hard I tend to use my sog Flash 2. It is my beater I picked up for $25. It is nice to carry a real quality knive once in a while. Right now I have a Spyderco Paramilitary ITW.

I dont think I will ever buy a CRK, but they are really nice knives. If I was going to spend that much money on a knife I would go for an OTF knife for EDC.

I prefer the better quality stuff , plus I live in Canada so prices get jacked up a bit . I like stuff that will not fail me , I had lock issues with a CRKT , and have shunned them ever since , I kinda like my fingers , and dont like exporting North American jobs . That rules out Chineese product , I will buy Japanese and European product , as they operate similar economic systems and are allies .

I mostly EDC stuff in the $100-400 U.S. range , that way I get to have stuff that wont screw up under pressure . I normally edc a Strider PT , and a Leatherman Charge Ti . I,m with you on one issue , stuff usually needs an edge reprofile on arrival . This doesn't speak to quality , just different uses . My biggest EDC is a Strider SMF at about $500.00 USD .

Priceless! When you need a good knife, your not thinking about how much it cost to save your a$$.

I won't go "under" $110 and am probably, well definitely since I'm carrying one to work today, willing to go up to, at least $800.

None of the knives I carry or own cost over 80 bucks, and all but one have served long and well. The only one I ever had fail was a Camillus HEAT, and that was only if you hit the spine at an angle, but needless to say I haven't carried it since. I see no reason to spend exorbitant amounts of money on them (though I wouldn't mind having a WH or Custom de Jour), but I definately wouldn't carry it for fear of loss. IMO that's a lot of money to lose, though I rarely loose things, and I don't have money to throw around like that. Would I spend 200 bones on a knife? If I had it to blow more than likely, though it wouldn't be something that I would just do for my own sake. My $.02.

The most I have ever paid for a folder was $140.00 dollars for a Spyderco G-10 Police, which I used as an EDC for over a year.
It was an excellent knife and I regret trading it away, but I doubt that I will ever pay that much again for an knife.

Around $600.00 is the most I've paid and it is a custom Marauder from Pat Crawford, and I do not regret nor do I kick myself for paying that price. I'm single (recently divorced), make a decent salary, and have very few bills to pay. As a result I will lay out that kind of cash for a knife................IF it is what I want.

For a beater blade, $50 max.

It willl get dropped, be used as a prybar, soaked in grease and oil, and passed around to other people throughout the day. No point in getting a knife I really like and then seeing it abused like that. Buck folders are my preference, as you can find them everywhere adn they are great quailty and also within my price range.

I dont buy beaters anymore, tried it with a Cold Steel Gunsite and CRKT m-16 and I hate em both. All my knives are users, and the ones I carry are mostly Benchmades and Spyderco's. I don't buy any just to stuff them in my sock drawer. The most expensive folder I've bought is my Surefire Delta that happens to be on order right now. Goes for about $425 but since I'm lucky enough to work at a Surefire/Benchmade/Spyderco dealer I get the good ol' Surefire employee discount. Needless to say the Delta cost me $175 and thats the most I've payed for a knife so far...

I spend more than I should thats for sure. I really dont need anything more than say a fifty buck Endura but I've spent as much as 550.00 on Sebenzas before.

Knives are indeed art. They are a study of form and design as well as material. If you buy higher end blades and keep them mint they often increase in price X over. I won't use a lot of my knives as I feel I don't need to and I like looking at them with perfect blades. I have a lot of Spydies and BenchMades that are no longer made and are unused. I just don't see why I should have to cut something with every knife I buy. As far as value its payed off.

All these I EDC:
For a beater blade: Original SuperKnife http://www.superknife.com/ and carry sheath. I don't care if I cut dirt with this thing; I beat the heck outta it.

Normal use: Leatherman Wave. Original, Made in USA Wave I got back in 1997. Use it every day, and don't spare it much unless it is a job for SuperKnife.

Emerson CQC-13. I take care of it, and keep it scary sharp.

Used to carry a Benchmade blue titanium 940 limited edition, 1 of 50 made. Still have it, and it is well used but sharp as hell. The 940s are great knives.

My current folder carry is an Opinel #8, less than $10.00.
My ECD fixed blade costs $20, an AG Russell Hunters Scalpel.

I don't carry anything that can't easily be replaced.

My current EDCs are in $80-100 range. All Spydercos. Adventura, Persian and Caly3.

The most I've paid for a knife is 50$. The most expensive knife I've owned was a Spyderco Manix / Yojimbo / Para, all of them were traded for. The only cutting instrument I've considered spending over 75$ for is a nice large Khukuri. I can get everything I need with a sharp edge for under 30$ an item.

EDC Folder: G10 Byrd 25$
Multitool - SAK Farmer 25$
Keychain knife - Vic Classic 5$
Small fixed blade outdoors - Moras 10$
Machete - Ontario machete for 15$ with sheath

The only thing difficult to find for this price is a large chopper. It's either a machete or a hardware store axe I suppose. Which is why this is the one area I feel ok spending a good amount on to get a nice chopper to use for the next few years. Any other area I see no reason to spend over 50$, much less 100, 200 etc. I'm not someone that cares about exotic materials and extreme F&F tolerances to spend the extra money on knives, when I can get everything I need in a Byrd and spend the rest on CD's, musical instruments, bills etc.

I don't buy very expensive knives, the ones that get the most pocket time are my Bucks, SAK Farmer, and Spyderco Native... Sometimes my Leatherman Micra.

I wouldn't mind spending a bit more money on a beefy fixed blade or folder but i'm cheap. I'm also a little iffy about spending more than a hundred dollars on a knife that i might lose.

Besides, all my knives have been getting there jobs done pretty well, even though they're not Striders.

My most expensive knife I own - and they're all users, is my RAT-1 Folder. I paid $45 for it off of eBaY. I currently rotate between my Byrd Meadowlark (G-10 PE - $20), and my Benchmade Mini-Ambush ($30). Both I find are great little knives that do the job without costing me a good lump of cash.

No second best here for me, i carry a Large Classic Sebenza, worth every penny and then some!

If i could not afford a Sebenza, i would carry a Buck 110 for around $40 or less, no worries there as well.

James

I've come to appreciate the more simple, and easily replaced knives myself. My new favorite EDC is a Spyderco Pacific Salt. It's simple, reliable mechanically, rust proof, lightweight, and I'm not afraid to USE it. The fact that I can have a replacement in my hands quickly and for less than $60 makes it even better.
