How much is a everyday folder worth?

Well, I'm a situational knife user (meaning that I live outside of Boston, and on a college campus), so my EDCs change. As to what an EDC is worth, I'd say that when you need it it's priceless. As to the most I've paid for a knife that I've EDC'd, that'd be just over $500. Though, as someone else already pointed out, once the money is spent, and you use the knife, you'll NEVER get more than what you paid for it- especially if you paid retail.

Also, true, most mechanics would think we're crazy for spending what we do on knives, but then again, I think some mechanics are crazy for spending the money THEY do on some of the tools that THEY have.

Its all a matter of perspective, I'd say.

As you can see there are a wide varitey of opinions. Best advice, if you have the money to get a higher end knife and not hurt your family budget or whatever you do, spend it. Money is all perspective. I big purchase for me $200-300, maybe be pocket change for you. My EDC's are a BM 710D2, and my mini manix. IMHO 2 of the best knives for the money you can buy. $220 total for both. I know if my life is on the line anything sharp with work, as long as I get to go home to my family. I am happy with both and won't lie that I am currently saving for a custom job. Best of luck in what you find.

an edc is probably only worth around 20 bucks, as you can get a knife that will perform any edc task for that much easily, without failing, for many years. Any cost above that is for something that has little to do with function.

That definition works for me. My personal EDC cost limit is ~$50. If I look hard it gets me good steel and decent fit and finish.

My edc is usually my Al mar mini-sere, and my new found love, boker biscuit. Just cant get enough of that knife. So about a $40-220 range. Ill switch it up sometimes for my Benchmade 707 sequel and when my Auto Mini-rukus shows up ill be carrying that in march.

All good knives just really depends on my mood. ;)

Now I like nice knives although my most expensive was only around $200 and I have several in the $150 range. However, I don't think you need to spend over about $50 for a knife you can trust your life to, like the CRKT M16 with LAWKS, Spyderco Endura, Buck 889 etc. My current preferred EDC is a Spyderco Scorpius (around $60) and although it lacks some refinement, I don't think it is any less tough or reliable than my higher end Spydercos, Emersons, Benchmades, etc.

I buy what I like. A Buck 110 or Spyderco Walmart Native are good for the money, but you can get much nicer knives.

What I read into threads like this, it seems like the poster either wants people to convince him that buying an expensive knife is worth it, or to convince others that they are wasting their money.

There is no right answer.
Just buy what you like.

I take on board what you are saying Rat, the last bit at least.
I am the POSTER in this case, I am very happy with what I buy and USE.
If you have plenty of money and using a $500 folder to cut up boxes and bang around is ok for you that is fine.
I have simple knives that are good quality and I actually use.
My point was more aimed at "Steel snobs" and "Price Snobs"
The amount of people that buy expensive knives that that are placed in cases and never used or sharpened seems ridiculous to me.
Unless it a purely financial resell case like an art collector then I do not understand it.
Rat i have a draw full of cheap (not that cheap to me) knives that I love and I do not need anyones stamp of approval to make me feel ok.
If I used a $500 knife to open the mail or cut up cardboard boxes then I would either be filthy rich beyond worry or a wanker :jerkit:
Only my opinion for what its worth.

I use my XL Mayo (quite a bit over $500) to cut open boxes and open letters, I'm not filthy rich, therefore, according to you, I'm a wanker...Can't you just feel all the love and acceptance around here...

The opposite of a "knife snob" is a "knife bigot"

The folder you carry every day and use, what is the most you will pay?
Well, i have paid up to 220 Euro for an Benchmade 5000A LE.
I have scratched most blades that would make them unsaleable or worth less than I paid.
Same as me. All my knifes are used and in some respect "worthless".
if they are strong and hold up then my kids will get them and appreciate them when I am gone.
I hope so.

At least, you are definatly right to think about prices and price performance ratio. Even though most ppl. here think the other way, there are borderlines, where quality, price and performance doesn´t fit together well.

Just the last month with the two "cheap" lines from Benchmade and Spyderco prove, it doesn´t has to cost more than $70,00 to get a first class knife and S30V is just a slightly higher top of the hill compared to well done AUS8a.

I do enjoy all my knives but would not recommend any high priced anymore, exept someone asks especially for a specific model.

I bought a $400 knife to use everyday, and it has superglue and scratches on the titanium to show it. I got it because 1) I could, 2) I buy only to use, 3) it had the features I wanted, in a heavy duty user. None of my other knives has this precise combination - in fact, no other I know of.

Therefore, it offers the best price vs. performance ratio for me. That's why so many different knives are made. I still use a Swiss Army for the scissors, or a box knife on sheetrock, but for an EDC, it has all my priorities covered.

Everybody has a different set of criteria they have been influenced to choose by experience and education. I don't prefer inexpensive stainless, FRN, liner locks, stainless/aluminum handles, AO/auto, clip or tanto points, serrations, and all the stunts, gimmicks, and restyled design thefts. I have them, but they are there mostly as a reminder.

For me, they work as well as an empty pickup truck on ice. I'm used to 4WD.

After trying a couple folders priced from $150-$20 for EDC I have ended up with a $20 Ka-Bar/Dozier Folder. Very decent knife for the price and did everything I needed an EDC for. Like to use heavier/fixed blades with decent steel for outdoors/hunting.

Honestly, for a tool that I'm going to have with me and use every day I would spend up to $1000 for the right one. I've been through many knives, most in the $350-$800 range and many where very very good. I have settled on the Sebenza as my EDC however as it really meets my needs the best and provides the quality I desire. I've yet to find a knife under less expensive then the Sebenza that offers the quality I want in my EDC knife (thouse the BM635 mini Skirmish has come the closest).

Outside of the 2000 lb torque wrench I used to use to tighten down airguns for seismic surveying, I can't think of a hand tool that costs as much as a high dollar pocketknife (and that thing had a 6 foot handle, so it wasn't very handy). One thing I don't understand is why some people think very high quality in one hand tool, which is also not very complicated or subjected to the same level of forces as others, must cost 10 times or more as the acknowledged best among the other tools.

not more than $150 so far…
I've lost my cellphone recently (had it for just coupleof monthe)
now I feel that loss $300 is significant to me
BUT if I had Sebbie or a custom (no, WHEN I'll have Sebbie/custom)
I'd carry them newertheless. I see no point in buying knives and not carrying them.
