How much mineral oil can a KLVUK asare handle drink?

Zoundz!!! This is some beautiful wood! This is gonna be hard not to polish out. I gotta fight the natural urge! Im going to have to get me another KLVUK for myself and polish the handle out. You can really see all the details now. My wife made it very clear that she likes it rough (dont go there:D) so I cant mess with this one. To me it looks a bit like Zebrawood. Wouldnt a scabbard look good made from this stuff! Hmmm?

I with ya on this Steve. Total of 29ml after 5 days. I wiped it off (pardon the paper towel fuzzies) and will let it come to equilibrium to see what happens. Whatever comes to the surface will have to be wiped off so my baby can use it safely. Im inclined to wipe it down with something that will polymerize but then again that's a crapload of oil so even if I do have to wipe it off a few days then thats ok.

The first KLVUK I got, I applied raw linseed oil to the surface several times a day for a week, and it seemed good. A couple weeks later, it was looking just a little bit dry.

The second KLVUK I got, I submerged it in raw linseed oil for a good four days. (And I thought I was overdoing it.) When it came out, it looked saturated, like a sponge. I let it stand upright for a couple days and a little bit oozed out from the pommel (maybe from some voids). A couple weeks later, it was looking just a little bit dry, but I know there's a good amount of "dried" oil in there protecting the wood.

I'm interested to see how all that mineral oil affects the Asare wood. I've hesitated using mineral oil on wood handles because it was my impression that it doesn't really "dry" (polymerize) like linseed oil, and I heard that it can work its way back out, maybe giving a noticeable oily surface on the wood. So, please keep us updated, ndoghouse.

Man, that sure looks great. I wonder how a topcoat of BLO would fair or if it would get all gummy. I did mine with heavy coats of BLO and let the asare soak it up for 10-15 minutes each time before wiping it off (three coats total over three days), but I did not put mineral oil first.

Boiled linseed Oil
What is BLO?
Thank you :)

BLO- oil comes from the seed of the flax plant but is processed "boiled" so that it dries faster than raw linseed oil. My wife and I used to use flax seed hair products (when I had hair) and was really good for shiny hair etc. She still boils flax seed in a pan of water and after a few hours of boiling it looks like snot! It comes out of the pan in almost one big chunk of slime. Creepy looking stuff! She thins it and does something else with it to break it down but is amazing how much oil comes from them seeds.
Apparently BLO is added to paint to make it more durable and give it a shinier texture. Sounds like the thing to do is add some to the handle after the mineral stabilizes. So I will wait. It protects metal as well. The inside of the can is nice and shiny:D

LOL I just finished putting a coat of tung oil on a worn khukuri handle about 5 minutes ago. It's sitting in my garage drying right now.

how well would a coat of polyurethan hold up?
Is it even something which one could touch without gloves without getting any health issues?

I submerged mine in blo for 3 days or so and it didn't absorb nearly as much oil as yours did. It's still nice and moist looking and tacky to the touch, though. Lanolin makes a great top coat as it doesn't get slippery like some waxes do. I also coated the blade with lanolin, which has been effective preventing rust. It did make the blade slick, though, so it no longer stayed snuggly in its sheath.

I can attest to the unique smell of real tung oil. Oh, the smell. I can't even really explain it, it's almost like wood soaked in gasoline.

Interesting reading Thanks Ron! Any idea how varnish and mineral oil mix would do? since I already have my handle saturated with Min oil? Or even Polyurethane thinned out as described. Not much talk of mineral oil maybe due to its lack of polymerization or drying?
A lot of tung oils are really just marketing around wipe on varnishes vs. real tung oil. Let me see if I can find the link... Here it is:

Plus here's another good one:

I predict that polyurethane would not adhere or blend well after all the oil. I could be off on that. I've refinished rifle stocks and grips etc and don't always know what was on the wood in the first place. Funny things happen when you put the wrong thing over some of them. Like oil over poly does virtually nothing.

Thats kind of what i expect too. I read in another thread about mixing poly and another oil to thin it out and then it can be rubbed on but i would be skeptical of its use as well. I know sometimes you can end up with a tacky mess of incompatible goo and not much fun to clean. Straight polyu yellows considerably in sunlight as well when applied as thick covering and probably would crack and peel with age. Just wondered how it would work as a sealant if it could be absorbed deep into the wood and wiped off. Ive never tryed it so dont know?

"tacky mess of incompatible goo and not much fun to clean."

Excellent description and better without the string of profanity I would have injected. I've been there a few times. Very ugly.

Im saving my profanity for my car. Im outside running back and forth with my fingers full of this blue silicone glu trying to glue my headlights in since all the plastic hardware is broken up. Car to DOTD to car to DOTD... Got this crap on my keyboard now but anint stopping me from sharkin! Still lookin for the elusive big chopper!

But it be day time and everybody know you don't need no headlights at day time.

Now if it be night time I know you don't got a watch cause night time ain't no time to be in this here neighborhood.

Silicone to your hearts content, what are you looking for, I'll shark for ya, I'm poor again. Or you want me just to surprise ya?
I love spending other peoples money.
