How much mineral oil can a KLVUK asare handle drink?

Im poor to lately. I got "furloughed" one day a week. Today is my furloughed day. Yep Ive heard about your neighborhood! At least your well armed! I bought me an ax handle for my double bit but im now wondering if It needs some heat treatment as well. It had a vacation in the 2000 degree sun a few years back. I got a quote from Aunti on a few knives not in the catalog I thought would be really nice! Ready for this?.....30" Chiruwa Ang Khola in wood! Im savin up! Hi has never made one:thumbup: Till then a 22" Ganga ram or 20" AK would do. They did make make a 25"AK Sarge ?? Maybe Rodericus will want to rid of his horn AK when he gets his new one???
But it be day time and everybody know you don't need no headlights at day time.

Now if it be night time I know you don't got a watch cause night time ain't no time to be in this here neighborhood.

Silicone to your hearts content, what are you looking for, I'll shark for ya, I'm poor again. Or you want me just to surprise ya?
I love spending other peoples money.

30" Chiruwa Ang Khola? That will be a mind blower. Probably have to ship it over on a barge to handle the weight but since they are doing that 2 is as good as one on a barge. I want one too.

That's gotta set ya back some serious loot though. Take darn near a whole leaf spring for one knife. How cool is that.

Furloughed, that's government kind of talk, you a secret agent or something. If you have to kill me if you tell me, I don't really need to know all that bad.

I used some She' butter on my KLVUK asare wood handle kuk and it worked great.'
I just happened to have some, that stuff lasts forever... and the best thing is that the heavy grease consistency doesn't make the handle oily like...um... oil.
doesn't get to gummy either after it dries. think nearly dry play-dough...
try it. cheap too.

Just dont get the kind with scent or other stuff.... 100% natural she butter.

It's a beautiful blade but it was always destined to be a showpiece. It's just too heavy to swing safely.

And a mighty fine show piece it is too. NICE with a capital, well I guess I capitalled em all huh?

Yup! I couldn't part with any of my Auntie triangle boxes but I'm sending you about an 19" rectangular box. The triangle boxes are just to special to me, can't part with them. I keep a couple at work and the rest at home and lord help the person that tries to take one from me.

Cant wait to see what it is? I have a few of them tri boxes myself. I only open them with another Khukri :D Kind of a ritual!

This may be kind of an odd question, but when you have a kukri that has had the wood shrink slightly from becoming dry. Once oiled sufficiently will it expand back to what size it came as or any at all?

I have heard some here say it does swell a bit. I will take a closer look at my KLVUK and see if anything noticeable but it was good before so may not be any help to ya there? Thats not an odd question. Many have wondered the same. anyone experience this?

Yep it swells back.
I own a chiruwa Ang Khola which aunty said had wood shrinkage so that the tang was wider than the handle. After two weeks in Linseed oil the handle swelled back and the tang doesnt poke out as much. Not 100% back to normal but close.

I suppose you could do this with horn? My GCB is slightly shrunk. I have been applying Hooflex on and off since I got it but it has no noticeable sweeling yet. Sure does give it a deep smooth shine tho. If you havent tryed this on horn you should. Doing it to all my horn now:thumbup:

My wood handles all tend to shrink a little because I keep them inside in the A/C. If I want to use one that's shrunken I'll leave it out in the humid garage for a couple days and that seems to do the trick.

So if it is shrunk near the buttcap a little it should also in theory comeback some after re hydrating it. The one I just purchased is like this just not sure how much gap until I see it.

Yes would try the soaking before hammering and filing the buttcap into shape.

Every piece of wood has its own personality. Depends on the type of wood, the direction of the grain, the amount of shrinkage, etc.
There's no one answer, but oiling is worth a try.

Suppose, for example, that the wood was glued to the tang with laha and separated a little from the tang or buttcap due to shrinkage. If it swells from oiling, it won't necessarily swell back to where it was. It might just swell outward. Depends on where the wood wants to go.

If the shrinkage causes a hairline gap and oiling doesn't work, you can fill with superglue. You can make the seam almost invisible with a little sanding. That also works on a loose buttcap

If it's a chiruwa-type handle and wood shrinkage causes the edges of the tang to be exposed, you might be able to file down the edges. Or work some epoxy along the edge for a smooth transition.

If you do use oil, the type of oil is another question. For shrinkage I wouldn't use mineral oil because if it doesn't fix the problem it might make it hard to apply superglue or epoxy later. I would try tung oil or something equivalent that can soak into the wood and then cure rather than remaining liquid.
