How often do you lose pocketknives?

The only knife I have lost so far was a Victorinox which was taken away by an airport security. That was in Hungary some time after 9/11 when they tightened the security without any prior notice: I traveled there no problem but lost it on the way back. I think I was rather surprised than upset at the time.

To quote Henry Frapp
Hmmm... been fearsome confused for a month or two, but I ain't never been lost!
.

About the same when it's come to knives. Knock on wood, I've had most of them make their way back to me. Some that were lost were "borrowed".

I've lost several over the years. USUALLY, I can figure out where I had it last and track it down. I've left knives in the ceiling or server rooms of clients, left one in a hotel room, lost a couple while doing scouting activities, and I've sacrificed several over the years to the Lake Gods.

Once I started to really collect, I've made it a rule to order a replacement immediately once I decide that I'm not going to track a particular knife down. That happed just recently when I left a Spyderco Tenacious on a networking installation trip in Ohio. That is the primary reason that I pick inexpensive, readily replacable knives to take on trips, ESPECIALLY boating trips.

Knock on wood, I've only lost one pocketknife, a SAK with my name on it given to me by an employer as a going away gift. I lost it in the snow (I think) because I normally can hear one fall and immediately start looking for it.

I lost one a couple of days ago. I left it on the back of a dry van I dropped at a customer. It was a dpx hest.

I've had some taken as a kid by my sister and mom but that's it basically. Once in a restaurant I felt my pocket and my sebenza wasn't there. it has caught the seat belt in car when I was getting out. That was a scary moment! I'm constantly checking my pockets to make sure all is there.

If I don't want to clip my knife (or if it doesn't have one) I ALWAYS carry it in a small velvet pouch. They are cheap but have great hold in your pocket. You can do a cartwheel and they will stay put. Before I starting doing that (on the advice of a local maker named Merz) I had some scary moments where my knives slipped from my pocket.

I've misplaced several, however I can't say I've lost one. I do know that I've rescued several from behind the back of my couch and like places.

I am just back from a camping trip, and have left my favourite old Buck 110 sticking in a tree trunk about 300 miles away. I am going back there in January next year, and hoping it will still be there, and not "liberated" or too damaged by weather.
(It is in a remote desert area, and neither rain or visitors are likely).

I hate losing any knife, but I especially hate losing an old friend of 20+ years.

If by lost you mean off my body, I think I only lost a Endura, which I loved. But I have become separated from so many knives I have lost count. I keep hoping someday I will find them at my parents.

I've had a couple stolen.
It's hard to find roommates that are trustworthy.
It drives me nutzo... stealing is never an option in my playbook.

I've also lost about a half a dozen knives in 45 years, now misplaced knives is a different story, I once lost a Bench Made Auto mini Reflex, misplaced it for 5 years, then while cleaning up in the barn I found it in a box of stuff I had been yardsalin' years earlier, along with two Schrade Fixed Blades I had when I was a kid.

MIA/misplaced knives eventually come back, it just takes time... ;)

Still MIA are two knives, an AG Russell One hand opener and a Custom Lockback by David Winston, both have been MIA for about 7 years... :(

I've lost everything but my knives. That includes wallet, keys, car keys, house keys, phone, passport, and a Omega(though I'm about 80% sure that was stolen).

Went to Hugary in '06 with 10 knives in my checked baggage, when I got to my cousins and opened my bags, guess what I found? Yup all 10 knives were still there.

A friend at Airport Security told me to use the security locks that they have the keys for, this way they don't have to break the locks which allows every baggage handler access to your bag after they search.

If ya use their locks, than they relock 'em and the theives move on to more accessible bags.

I think I found more knives then I've lost through the years.

I believe it's a matter of discipline, and the importance you place on the gear you carry.

As a teenager I was trained in mountaineering and latter spent much time traveling into the wilderness for Hunting and Fishing expeditions.

Loosing any gear can be catastrophic when things go wrong.

Situational awareness and the discipline to make sure any used equipment is properly returned to it's planned and secured location becomes second nature over time.

I see my friends and co-workers who loose cell phones and car keys like it's going out of style, of course none of them really have a clue, and don't understand the discipline it really take to keep tabs on their stuff.

My lovely wife is the worst.

Lost one, misplaced one (but it's somewhere in my belongings), and had one stolen. Been getting into knives since 2007.

Had an unlucky friend who lost a Sebenza after only about 1-1.5 years or so of owning it.

I've lost one knife over the past 25 years or so. A Benchmark fixed blade that had a folding blade guard.

I've lost two.. My first Surefire Delta folder and my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 which I lost last night.. Luckily after looking for it forever I found it. It definitely stings when you lose an expensive knife!
