How Often Do You Really Use Your EDC?

I am sort of up and down with use. Some days, I can go all day and never pull it out. But other days, like today, I use it a bunch. For example:

I am EDC'ing a Benchmade 943 today (loving this thing!!) and so far, I've used it to unbox a large UPS (battery backup), unbox a router (any guesses what I do for a living? ;)), cut away some bad spots from my Gala apple (the best!) and showed it to a co-worker (hey, that counts, right!?).

So how about you guys? Do your EDC's see much real "every day" type use, and if so, how?

In school my sebbie works hard at cutting papers out of notebooks. Occasionally my edcs get used to open boxes, clamshells, envelopes and such, and also to sharpen pencils or cut loose threads.

Some days more, some days less. Some days not at all.

But for me, the point is to have with me when I need it. It is the peace of mind which comes from being prepared that matters. Whether I actually "need" my EDC items, or how often I use them, almost becomes irrelevant.

I carry 2 flashlights on me, one more in my Suburban and two in the Man Sack that rides in my vehicle. I almost never need those extra ones, but when the electricity went out at church this weekend, I was ready. Wanting to be prepared is probably an outgrowth of some sick, twisted childhood incident that only Sigmund Freud could unravel. Or maybe I just like to manipulate my environment rather than the converse. Either way, its fun to be prepared and has almost no downside.

I have 2 folders and a multitool on me right now, and may not cut a single thing today. But for me, thats not really the point.

+1 on this. Very well said.

Like Powernoodle, somedays are more or less. Today, I have used both my EDC fixed knives. I cut some 4 mil plastic sheeting to cover up a car window that won't roll up.
I used my Fiddleback Forge EDC to cut up some ginger for tea. I could have used a kitchen knife, but..

That's great and I sure appreciate the pontification, but the point of the post was to find out what you actually use your EDC knife/knives for - or not. Not so much why you have them, even if you don't use them. ;)

Nice! Raining up there too eh?

That's what I like to hear! :) I do it, too. I had a nice Henckels steak knife sitting here earlier I could have used for my apple but what did I do? Whip out the Benchmade, that's what! ;)

Several times a day.

Even on packages that have "easy open" tabs, just because I can. :)

Every day for me too. I typically use it to open things. Today it was a new Gateway Netbook for my daughter. Came home for lunch so that means slicing up a lime for tonic water. Who knows what it will be tonight but having a knife is like having a right hand.

Use mine practically everyday, depending on the task, I'll either grab a 3" XM from my left or a small seb from my right. If a pencil isn't readily available, I'll grab either and make the necessary notches in the wood to be cut. Banged the XM blade with a rubber mallet on a couple of occasions to start off chiseling jobs.

Also, breaking down boxes is a task split between the two- girlfriend always gives a quizzical look at how eager and happy I am to break down her amazon boxes. Often times I'll volunteer- imagine that.

I'm also my own shredding machine, with the small seb or actually, any other knife. Low power consumption- just elbow grease.

As previously stated, when not in use, still good to have them at hand- better prepared, than wanting.

When I am away from home I probably don't cut more times than I do. Still I always carry though. Usually two knives when out. A SD blade and a smaller sheeple knife.

At home it's usually one small knife like an Opinel or Delica. They get the most action opening mail, cutting tags and strings and such. BUT my favorite thing to cut is packages containing new knives. :D

I may be biased because i like knives but i can't think of another item i'd carry daily that would be as useful as a knife. Ok, maybe my wallet.
I use mine for the usual on ordinary days -- opening packages/mail, cutting food, trimming threads, bar brawls(kidding).

One of my favorites -- at Christmas or birthdays, i use it to cut wrapping paper. Its way faster than scissors.

On weekends - the bigger ones come out and I find it really useful around the yard, or working on house projects, or ideally out in the woods.

Just about daily and several times a day. Today I sliced an apple for lunch, removed some plastic wrapping from a package, while reassembling a vice I used the tip of the blade to clean out some metal chips, I cleaned up some threads with the same, I cut a small plastic bottle to make a holder for a bit of oil, I cut several lengths of twine, all before noon. Fairly typical for a work day.
