How Often Do You Really Use Your EDC?

Like everyone else, some days I use my knife more than others. Today, so far, my Delica sliced up a lime, removed some frayed threads from my clothing, opened a shrink-wrapped package, and cut down a cardboard box for recycling. I'd say that's fairly typical use for me.

I'm the same as you, sometimes I use it several times a day, sometimes I don't use it at all. And the funny thing is the times I do use it, I could've actually done without it. I use to never carry a knife on me as I rarely rarely need it. Now that I'm a knife-nut I carry it mostly for the novelty.

Just about everytime I eat fruit I cut it up. Anytime I throw something away I cut it up to smaller pieces (the majority of the volume of household garbage is air).

Of course, I wash my knife in between :)

Another good question would be how often do others ask to use your knife. This happens to me almost as often as my own usage, some days more.

Oh and just earlier today I used my small seb to cut the tape on a WAWA hoaggie wrapper, I got weird looks but it was a lot easier than just ripping it open.

That's great and I sure appreciate the pontification, but the point of the post was to find out what you actually use your EDC knife/knives for - or not. Not so much why you have them, even if you don't use them. ;)

No, actually the point of the post was not what you use your knife for, but how often you use it.. :D

I am sort of up and down with use. Some days, I can go all day and never pull it out. But other days, like today, I use it a bunch. For example:

I am EDC'ing a Benchmade 943 today (loving this thing!!) and so far, I've used it to unbox a large UPS (battery backup), unbox a router (any guesses what I do for a living? ;)), cut away some bad spots from my Gala apple (the best!) and showed it to a co-worker (hey, that counts, right!?).

So how about you guys? Do your EDC's see much real "every day" type use, and if so, how?

I use mine all the time, every day. Today I used it to trim the excess material off the corners of our nylon windows.

I work in an office so I have more than one EDC. I used my office EDC (Benchmade 943 like you) to cut up the apple I had for breakfast. I used my home EDC (Spyderco S90V Manix 2) to cut open a bag of dog food and hack down an ironweed growing up against my deck.

The office EDC doesn't get used daily, but the home EDC's usually get used at least once a day.

FWIW, I've never used my EDC gun, but I consider that a good thing. :)

I'd say 3-4 times a day (M-F) on the weekends probably more & normally with a littler larger knife. Used for mail, packages, packing material, fruit, some food prep.

Today I cut open a couple of packages. Sliced open a bagel, cut my nails with my SAK, not much else, but it's more of a comfort level to have it with me, plus I like my blades to be useful in self defense.

My job as a tech support squirrel doesn't lend itself to using my daily carry knife much, but I do have to cut plastic straps off boxes of copier paper and open the occasional package. For instance, I used my Spyderco Sage 1 today to open a cardboard hang-pack containing a USB flash drive and an envelope from Leatherman containing my Charge AL (sent it off for warranty work).

...

Fine, I won't lie, I do search for occasions when I could use my knife, but don't necessarily have to. I sliced open a bag of animal crackers too. :D

Some days more, some days less. Some days not at all.

But for me, the point is to have with me when I need it. It is the peace of mind which comes from being prepared that matters. Whether I actually "need" my EDC items, or how often I use them, almost becomes irrelevant.

I carry 2 flashlights on me, one more in my Suburban and two in the Man Sack that rides in my vehicle. I almost never need those extra ones, but when the electricity went out at church this weekend, I was ready. Wanting to be prepared is probably an outgrowth of some sick, twisted childhood incident that only Sigmund Freud could unravel. Or maybe I just like to manipulate my environment rather than the converse. Either way, its fun to be prepared and has almost no downside.

I have 2 folders and a multitool on me right now, and may not cut a single thing today. But for me, thats not really the point.

+1 more.

Today I made some surgical cuts. I removed a crossword from a coworkers paper with my subcom.

almost daily, i get to cut open packages we get almost everyday at work and couple times i day ill use it to cut some fishing line.
some of our customers are knife people so we show our newest knives.

for the last 6 months or so, i have been carrying a small sebenza, preon 1 flashlight, and a leatherman micra on my keychain. i am realizing that i pretty much *never* need a knife, and if i do, 99% of the time it is something that the small blade or the scissors on the micra can handle. because of this, i recently have pretty much stopped carrying my sebenza altogether (or any dedicated knife for that matter), and i dont miss it.

maybe once or twice a week i carry the knife just cause i love the sebenza, but i really dont need a knife, and may stop carrying one altogether because im a minimalist and hate carrying things that i know i never use.

i'm loving the micra/preon1 combo on my keychain. the scissors and flashlight get the most use.

i wish i had a use for a knife with more capability than the micra, because the sebenza is the best knife ive ever held.

so to answer your question, i almost NEVER use an EDC knife. my keychain multi tool and flashlight are where its at for me.

Almost never.

When I'm out and around; several times, with my EDCs (multi-knife carrier that I am). When I'm at home; many times, with any of my other knives scattered all over the house.
