How often do you see 'higher end' knives out in public (other than in your own pocket)?

Ya guys just need to come and hang with me for a day. Ranch roping competition.

Spotted one of mine:

And another of mine. This guy flew in from Italy with his wife to watch the roping.

I saw an electrician yesterday with some fixed blade that had what appeared to be micarta handle scales on it and from the quick glance I got I think a full tang. I don't know who made it but didn't look like a cheap wal-mart or other big box store knife.

Three days a week I go hang out for a couple of hours in my local cigar shop. The regulars are all guys who love guns and knives. Some days, it's show and tell. I have seen Sebenza's, ZT0300, Benchmade Onslaught (mine), several Spyderco's, a Scandinavian Puka, Stider's, Busse's, Bose Stockman. Those days are what got me interested in something other than the cheap knives I was used to. Until I saw some of those, I would never have thought that a knife would be worth $400 or more.

Last night, on the way to the Fireworks celebration, I saw a pocket clip while on the bus.
Looked to be Cold Steel.
It turned out to be an AK47 with tan G-10 scales. :)

That might not seem very high end to us here, but compared to all the cheap, mystery no-name Chinese crap that I usually see, it ain't bad. ;)

And it looked like it actually got used.
Like he said, "It's important to have a quality utility knife."
Indeed; preach it brother! :D

It was a few years ago but I took my small CRK Insingo to work and clipped in my pocket. This is not something I typically do but I grabbed the jeans from the day before while I was rushing out the door and didn't think about it in the office environment. When I was on my way to the cafe to grab lunch a guy walked up and said I love you Sebenza! He also had a large Regular Sebenza that he used and carried on the weekends. Great when someone spots quality and bonds over why we are all in this knife collecting obsession :)

I've seen a few benchmade and spyderco knives in the wild but nothing higher end than that.

Just read this whole thread. Wow... just wow.

Before the next big whine gets going about how stupid most people are when it comes to knives, this thread should be pasted in the middle of it to let everyone know how isolated we are.

I work in construction and carry a few knives, mostly ZTs and my Spyderco Valloton. A couple of Kershaws that I can't kill. NEVER on the job site do I see much more than gas station stuff. Sad, as every time the boys use one of my knives they are really "wowed".

Exactly. :)
I'd put it in the Endura and Griptilian sort of range.
A solid knife that does the job and is nice enough to have some pride of ownership.

The bus was super packed so I didn't haul out my Emerson Super Commander to show him, but if was nice to see a name brand knife "out in the wild."
Previously, the only nice knives I saw were at work when I had converted a co-worker into being a huge Knife Knut who spent way too much money on knives. :D Then I got to see all sorts of expensive knives, ranging up to the $400 price-point. But that seemed a little less valid as far as outside sightings go, since I had converted him to the sickness.

I actually had 3 co-workers that carry Emerson knives. One mini-Horseman, one Commander, and one Desert Roadhouse satin blade. The Commander was sold by the guy with the mini-Horseman. One of our salesmen had me sharpen his buchered Benchmade 583sbk Barrage.

Beyond work, I have seen some Kershaw and one or two Benchmade mini-Grip.I thought I spotted at ZT 300 at a college ceremony, but that is unconfirmed.

Lots of Case Trappers in belt sheaths, some larger 2 blade Hunters as well.

If I spot something cool I always make a point to tell my wife :D. "Benchmade 9 o-clock"

I use mine all the time. Its a tool, a very nice one that I paid a lot for, but a tool none the less. I want it and expect it to perform to what it promised before I parted with my hard earned cash. I literally am in life/ death situations and I buy tools that will not fail me in time of need. I don't really care what it costs as long as it performs when I need it, because my life may depend on it.

Emerson, PDW, BM Infidel, and TAD are all in regular carry.

I never see knives out in public, regardless of price or quality.

Move to Texas! I see more and more pocket clips on women's jeans these days. My buddy is a Benchmade dealer, and he cannot keep the pink and blue Griptillians in stock. They sell out literally in days, and sometimes he has a waiting list for the pink model.

That being said, many women I am around have a SAK, or even a small gas station type knife.

Pretty common for just about everyone around here to have some kind of edged instrument on their person. Sadly... just not quality pieces for the most part. Even for my buddies and co-workers they simply see their knives as a tool used for a lot of different tasks, including occasional cutting.
