How old were you.......

4th grade, Boy Scout type folder.

Having said that, make sure your kids understand that it is imperative that they DO NOT take their knives to school!

The "no tolerance" policy at many schools has made what I would consider mandatory man equipment (a knife) unwelcome in almost any form.....expulsion might even result.

You would not believe how much grief I get from my students when they notice my knife clipped on my pocket....

I have no earthly idea how old I was (9-10 maybe?) but I do remember that I was in Cub Scouts. I was a Webelos, and at a father-son outing at Camp Wanocksett in Dublin, NH, only I was with my grandfather since my dad was away on business. He brought me into the trading post and got me an official BSA lockback. No idea who made it, but I'm gonna guess Camillus. He's since given me a number of his old knives, and single handedly jump-started my interest in knives and knife collecting. My parents got me a Victorinox SAK for Christmas that year and the rest is history. Now I've got more than I know what to do with. Hopefully one day I'll have a son to pass along my addiction. Er, collection. I mean collection. Yeah, that's it. :D

Ah, but those were the days. Got my Arrow of Light, moved up to the Boy Scouts, reached the rank of Eagle at 15, then promptly lost interest and quit, lol. Did a lot for my wilderness skills though. And as stated, without having experienced that fateful day, I doubt I would've developed the passion for knives that I did.

Edit: I figured it out! It was a Camillus. An "Official Boy Scouts of America #2 Small (Mini) Lockback #C1065 (pattern 5761)" I swear I have it around here somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can remember where.

My grandpa gave me a SAK when I was a kid. I don't know how old, but I think somewhere between 7-10. I still have it!

I was at most 8 it was a hand me down from my father. I believe it was a Boker in a stockman pattern. I have pretty much carried a knife since then. Another thing is I was fascinated with sharping at a young age also.I was doing my own sharping by my early teens at least maybe sooner. A six inch grey carbide stone and a crossed ceramic rod sharpener were my first tools.

I have carried a knife every day sense I was in 6th grade. Those were the good ol days when a boy could carry a knife to school and no one thought of them as a weapon.
I have bought my son a knife of some kind every birthday and Christmas sense he was born. He has been carrying one sense he was 8,the age has much to do with the child as well. Tyler has all ways been mature for his age.
Here he is with his first Bussekin,he was 9 or 10 IRRC. Anyone know what year that Blade was? Hard to believe how fast they grow.

Think I was 6. A little buck folder. Allowed to carry it all the time, except school, at 7.

ETA mine was a gift from my grand father. I think I was taught knife safety from birth by that old man becasue I can't remember ever being told the rules but I always remember them. He was pretty struck on it. Never stick your knife in the dirt. Never cut towards your self or with in arms reach of any one else. Always keep your knife sharp. That's almost funny, cause with my little buck he gave me a Norton fine India stone. Showed me how's to use it, as good as you can with a 6 year old, then let me dull the crap out of it until I figured it out. Funny tho.

It is amazing to see how everything has changed! The booth was so small compared to the new one. I love hearing all these stories!

I was 12 when I got my first Swiss Army knife. It was neat with the scissors, nail file and tweezers.:D

I would have to say 2006.

I think my Dad got me my first knife around age 6 ? Was a Victorinox large folder, had everything lol. I know I had it before I was in Cub Scouts. And yes I still have it today.

My father got me into knives when he gave me my first knife, the one his father had given him, when I was around 7 years old. It's been a passion of his that I have shared ever since

I was 6 when my mothers crazy uncle gave me my first slip joint. When all of kids would be sitting around listening to his tall tales of worldly adventure he would pass out little knives that he kept in a cigar box. We would visit a couple times a year and each and every time he would pull out another jewel from that never ending supply. I was like 10 when I got up the nerve to trade all my little colorful knives for a Bayonet. When my dad saw the bayonet he took me out to the barn where he kept all his private stash of goodies and produced another bayonet and a Colt 1st Gen Peacemaker that my grandfather carried when he rode with Black Jack Pershing when they were tracking Pancho Villa...Long Story Short I have 2 bayonets and a Colt that reside in my Ultra Private Stash..along with some little jewel slip joints...;)

That would have made him 9 in that pic. He just turned 16.
Here he is from this years show. Makes me feel very old looking back through the old pics.

WOW, I would say that he has grown just a little. :P

These kids today are born with Silver BUSSE knives in their hands. Oh wait....that is Silver Spoons in their little mouths.

In some countries kids are using machetes by age four and can actually handle them quite well.
