How old were you.......

I was prob 6-8 don't remember what kind of knife, my uncle gave it to me and mom made him dull the point. She figured as much as I ran around hopefully I would'nt stab my self. That was in the early 70's.

I field dressed and skinned my first deer with one of those, with a Craftsman label on it, 50 or so years ago. Still have it, along with the original sheath wrapped in black electrical tape since the stitches long ago rotted.
Yep you pegged the age pretty well...........that knife is a little over fifty years old. The reason it rusted was because it was still in the leather sheath in Central FL humidity for 15 years before I retreived it.
This one has dressed quite a few deer over the years.

I was about 10 when I got my first knife. It was an old two blade folder with a mother of pearl inlay in the handle. My grandfather gave it to me when he took me out squirrel hunting for the first time and taught me how to skin and clean an animal. When we got back to the house he told me to be careful and not to get into too much trouble with my little knife.

I was about to say I was nine, when I got a fake swisschamp for Christmas, but you reminded me that it was in fact another folder (with a saw, can and bottle opener along with the knife blade) that my grandfather gave me when he started taking me fishing. I had forgotten that one! I was about seven or eight I think.

My first 'proper' knife was a 6" sheath knife that I got when I was ten, with my birthday and Christmas money (they are close together). A Bowie pattern stainless blade and leather washer handle, that knife saw a lot of action in the woods over the following years until I lost it when I was about eighteen.

Funny how I still feel most at home with a knife around 6" long in my hand.

My parents took me camping at NMLRA Muzzle-loading shoots and rendezvous for as long as I can remember, and I went to fleamarkets often with my grandfather. My first knives were probably fleamarket junk when I was not very old at all, but I remember always having a patch knife my father let me use when shooting. I started shooting longbows when I was 2 or 3, my dad made me my first and I think I had "my own" muzzleloader when I was 8, which I used under supervision. The first real knife that I was really given by my parents was an Old Timer 2 blade folding knife, which I wish I still had. I was probably about 10 years old or so. I grew up around "dangerous" things and have had a pretty good understanding that they are not toys. I'm not sure that everyone gets that same mindset while growing up, especially with how things have been going with youth lately, and, mind you, I am only 21 as I type this and already see the problems there. Just make sure that they know it is not a toy and what can result if they treat it as one. I think that the only way to promote the knife and firearm lifestyle is by teaching it and passing it on at early ages, but with care in doing so.

That's cool. I got my start with guns, knives, and archery in the world of rendevous as well. When I was a kid my parent ran a historical education center in Grand Rapids Ohio called Seven Eagles. I spent my childhood living in wigwams and teepees. I learned really early that these things were not toys. I hope to be able to pass those lessons on to my children.

6. I'd already been fasinated by knives for years, but dad was hesitant to let me have one.
He said it'd close on my fingers.
So then I learned there were fixed blades.
Then he said I'd fall on it some how and stab myself.
After looking through all the catalogs and sales papers again, I finally won.
I got him to let me have the Gerber River Shorty.
Fixed blade, blunt point. Hard plastic sheath.
No idea where it is now, but I loved that knife.
Always carried one ever since.

I think I got my first knife when I was 8 and my pops took it outside stuck in a crack in the sidewalk and broke the tip off. then he ran the edge on the concrete until it was stupid dull lol. when I was like 10 he finally gave me a black jack mamba pocket knife and didn't make me dull it. that was my Christmas present. 10 minutes later opening another Christmas present I cut my finger down to the bone lol. I got up and walked off with out saying a word as to not lose my new blade. washed it off good in the bathroom and wrapped it all up. Pops immediately came in after me and said " you already cut yourself didn't you lol" we managed to hide that from mom though and I learned my lesson quickly

I believe I heard that story at Knob Creek this year. Hope you can make it to the next show.

I'm not sure, but it was when I was very young, around 6 or 7 I think. I do remember us trading them at school about like baseball cards starting in the 5th grade. Mostly cheap knives, but most all of us had a box full.

Can you imagine if you tried that today? I can remember sitting in class and guys cleaning their nails with pocket knives and no one even thought to care. Times sure have changed. Now my kids would get sent home if they wore a t-shirt with a picture of a knife on it.

I got a two bladed Kabar mini "Barlow" from a neighbor who was a part time knife dealer when I was 6. I remember cutting myself on the hand and bandaging myself so my mom would not take my knife away. I have carried a folder everday since.

My daughters each have their own folders. My oldest was allowed to practice cutting on a bar of soap when she was 10, carry it outdoors with permission and hunting when she was 11. My 8 year old just oohs and ahhs over hers so far. I mistakenly got them Victorinox SAKs at first but they cannot open them. That prompted me to get pink Kabar lockblades.

You sure are right about that.
I took a distributive education class in HS, and won first place in my county for sales demonstration(guns). I then went to the state finals in Atlanta. When I walked in the school with my Winchester model 70, Remington 870, and Browning Semi-Auto .22 no one blinked an eye.
I didn't take ammo, and it cost me from placing. The teacher/judges would be the buyers, and after my sales pitch she asked why I didn't have ammo as a suggested selling add-on. I had forgot it, and hoped they wouldn't bring it up, but I kinda knew they would.
That was 1977. My how times have changed.

I think I was probably 8 or 9 when I got my first knife. An Old Timer pocket knife if I remember correctly. I carried that thing everywhere.

I think I was five when my grandpa gave the first pocketknife to me...
This was a round about 8 year old Victorinox which he bought for himself in the past.
I was only allowed to use it when he was around
One Year later my grandpa was called by the Big Boss and the Knife was in a drawer for a few years

Now 28 years later (without Zombies) when I used it the first time I'm still using this knife :-)

My boys 7 & 8 both received SAKs last Christmas. They also have lock backs they received a month or so ago. For Christmas Im probably going to get them small Camp knives from one of the makers on the forum here. I have had a knife on me since I was 6 or so. Times were different then I suppose, as I have been shooting since I was 4. The woods aren't available to me now to take the boys camping as much to use the knives, and finding a sand pit to go target shooting in is almost impossible where I live now...ahh yes...the good ole days...
