How to carry fixed blades?

US TV. Now there is an excellent measure of reality!

Let's get down on planet earth, as opposed to Bladesforum planet, and show me a picture of someone with a 10 inch blade openly carried, hanging down the belt, in an urban crowd: It will take you a long while to find one...

Oh and a still from "Crocodile Dundee", that won't count...:

Who the hell said anything about carrying a 10" blade around in public? Most people are talking about edc blades 3-6" with an OVERALL length of around 10".

However I have carried my bk9 out and about when I was on my way out to use it...I don't take selflies of me and my knife in Wal-Mart thou.

For a fixed blade I tend to carry them around my neck. But then again this is mainly for hunting use. My daily carry knife for personal and work is a Cold Steel Voyager XL the old Japanese one. I sure wish they did not change there design.

So you want me to waist my time scouring the internet for a picture that would prove or disprove an argument you are having with yourself? Not gonna happen.

If anyone were to take a picture of me out in public they would have a photo of one handsome devil openly carrying a 10" fixed-blade. A photo suitable for framing.

And I've seen plenty of other people openly carrying similar knives. But I don't go around in public taking pictures of men, or asking them if I can take their picture.

As I recall Gaston, you live in Canada. Do you have a lot of experience traveling in the US? Do you have a lot of experience interacting with US law enforcement? Do you have anything to base your assumption on when you say that openly carrying a 10" fixed-blade will result in being hassled by US law enforcement?

I live in the US, and I've had a lot of positive interaction with local members of law enforcement, and in almost a decade of openly carrying a 10" fixed-blade in urban San Diego I've never once been "hassled".

And regardless of how long it might take to find someone else who carries a 10" fixed-blade, I carry what I want. I don't choose my knife based on what other people carry.

Nope. This won't work. We need picture evidence. You don't see it on TV after all! It can't be true if it is not on TV.....

Pics or it didn't happen. Go to a biker bar during bike week sometime. My endura felt tiny in comparison.

I carry my fixed blades in sheath ... usually on my belt ... "neck carry" of a machete is just not practical.

I'm luckily in a place that allows open carry of pretty much anything shorter than a short sword. I put a knife on my belt however I want to and carry it. I really don't care what anyone thinks about me carrying one. I have my reasons for carrying a knife and anyone that doesn't like it can .... ....

Sometimes I'm pretty clean cut, sometimes I look pretty haggard. It doesn't matter to me. I carry one just the same. I do not purposefully try to act intimidating though. I rarely get a second look even though I can look pretty freaking mean sometimes, or at least I've been told.

When I'm blatantly carrying a firearm and decent size knife I go out of my way to hold doors open for women, etc. Helps smooth things over, even if it's in their subconscious.

I guess that would depend on what you mean by large. I normally carry a 3 or 4 in fixed blade OWB. But I always wear my shirt untucked. I have to in order to cover the handgun on my other side.

I guess I'll have to bring along a documentary film crew next time I go to the grocery store. After all, how else will anyone believe that a person could openly carry a 10" fixed-blade in public without causing a panic or a SWAT standoff..

:D

Not only that you will have to either sell it to TrueTV or come up with a Hollywood funding source to produce the film.

Canadian here! The city I live in has bylaws related to public behaviour and they somewhat limit knife carry. While it is legal to carry a knife for use as a tool (not self defense, we're not allowed to arm ourselves preemptively), my city prevents open carry. So, I gotta conceal my fixed blades however I can while I'm out and about.

That's not to say I haven't carried my SK5 Leatherneck on my belt, under my coat. Or, more recently, my ZT 0121. It rides pretty high and it's a rather short, stout knife, so it is easy to cover up with a shirt or hooded sweater.

Edit to mention that the Leatherneck is 12" overall, the ZT 0121 is just under 9" in it's sheath.

Easy draw into reverse grip edge out without worry of accidental concealment.

I open carry THREE fixed blades every day, literally. As MAX blade length in Texas for public carry is 5-1/2" (open or concealed doesn't matter) I carry dual Kabar 125X knives in their factory sheath in dangler-style belt carry. They have 5-1/4" blades (9-1/4" OAL). The 3rd knife is a BK11 (3-1/4" blade) and I pocket carry it (LHP) with the handle exposed.

I have NEVER had a LEO hassle me in the least. The only questions by LEOs have been "What are they?" or "Why 2?" (They don't even give the small necker in my LHP a second look.) That's it. I tell them of the time my grandfather got a sleeve caught in a moving chain on a combine. He quickly pulled his Kabar 1232 and sliced his sleeve off.

He said "That's why you carry a fixed blade. You could never get a pocket knife out of a pocket and open in time."

I asked him "What if it had been you're other arm?"

He got a funny look on his face, turned off the tractor and said "Let's go."

We went into town and he bought a Western L46-5, the closest thing to a Kabar 1232 the Western Auto had in stock. Later, when the store got some 1232s in, he bought a second one and gave me the L46-5, saying ...

"If you're smart enough to ask that question, you're old enough to have your own fixed blade."

He then carried dual fixed blades anytime he was working on equipment, which was most of the time as he worked 5 farms, ran the grain elevator and owned the butcher shop.

I was 10 years old back then and I still have that first (of many) fixed blades. I have carried and used fixed blades for over 51 years since that day - August 13, 1965 - ever since, except when precluded by local law (or regulations in the Navy).

As far as what anyone else thinks? I don't give the north end of a south-bound rat about what anyone else thinks. I saw a post a few days ago in a different thread where the poster declared that in 45 years he had only seen 1 person open carry a fixed blade and that it looked stupid. Don't know where the individual has been living, but it must be in some nanny state.

And if a LEO chooses to use the fact that a person is LEGALLY carrying a LEGAL fixed blade openly as probable cause for stopping/searching/hassling/arresting? Well, then that LEO is from one of the said nanny states and would be providing a welcome boost to my retirement fund.

If someone gets their panties in a wad over what knives I carry, well, to quote my father -

"They got the same clothes to get glad in that they got mad in."

I use this system with every pocket sized fixed blade that has a kydex sheath. With a proper leather sheath would work also with a small puukko. The beauty of this is that the knife can be tied in the belt with the same cord for under the belt or IWB carry and the lenght of the cord can be easily adjusted for pocket carry. I just draw the knife out of my pocket, the knife breaks out of the sheath which drops to dangle on my side.
