How to make a custom knife.. You have never seen a video like this.. I promise..

Mike, thanks for making and sharing that great video.

I am going to guess that you may have skipped some safety practices to avoid cluttering up the narrative flow; but if not, please consider wearing gloves when working with the epoxy resin. Those materials can lead to a skin sensitization reaction upon repeated exposure, you and your team don't want to risk ending up with an allergic skin response.

Thanks Friend.
You sound like someone with firsthand knowledge of coating products and your advice is much appreciated.

I recently got some resin on my forearm and when I wiped my brow it accidentally filled my eyeball up with epoxy.
It was creepy as hell, I wiped it out with a paper towel but it really irritated the inside of eyelid and the very corner of eye got glued shut for about 12 hours.
I flushed the edge of my eyeball with alcohol and then stuck a water hose about an inch away and flushed it out for nearly 10 minutes.

Thanks again for posting.
Respect.

Mike:
Thanks for taking the time to produce such an informative and professional video. The 48 minutes flew by. I'm going to bookmark it for future re-viewing.

If you're up for it in the future, I'm sure I am not the only one who would appreciate a little more detail on your grinding blocks. Your points about repeatability are well made. I'm sure that if there were a jig to force that kind of duplication available, every golfer and baseball player would climb all over themselves to get one. Consistency leads to quality.

Thanks again,

Bob

Oh wow Mike that is horrible. Keep in mind that white distilled vinegar works great at cleanup epoxy and get it off the skin quickly and safely.

Thats why I like to hang around with friends like you. People that are smarter than me. That is what I teach my sons. "Pick Smart Friends"

Smart Friends suggest Vinegar while a "Not So Smart Friend" hands you a bottle of rubbing alcohol and then is surprised when my eye gets glued shut.

Thanks for your support.

Wow, that is a great post B.
Thanks for taking time to share the truth.

We are shooting a New Video that is Exclusively on Grinding.
It is one hour long detailing methods to grind large bowies, upswept hunters, extreme recurves, compound grinds, reinforced tips, 14" hollow and flat grinding.
I am going to demonstrate a method that has no length or curvature restrictions.
I am very excited about this next video.
Thanks again for your support.

Well, as a guy thinking of picking up some basic tools to start making my own knives I have to thank you.

You make it look so easy, and it is a huge encouragement.

Gonna start saving my pennies to start into some simple making, just like what you have shown here.

Thanks from up North. ;)

Excellent.. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking time to post.

Hi Mike,

I finally got around to watching the vid in entirety. It's as you promote: Efficiency in action. Loved the visual explanation of the chisel grind vs. bevel grind. LOL!

I have a distinct similarity in my work to yours: Timesaving procedures which 'automate' the processes and allow you to move quickly step by step.

Oh, but what about that mess of epoxy on your desk.  To shame.... ;) (You've already been chided on that.)

The vid left me wanting ONE MORE thing which wasn't abundant: You smiling gold teeth. :D You work SO hard and are so passionate. Your smile would convince me more, not your wince. Like your sig. :)

Good stuff. A gazillion views already. Props from up in CT.

I wish I could afford to hire you as a personal motivation coach..

Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts.

Your have such a unique style of posting. The presentation is structured like a great speech.

It builds slowly, you gain total viewer attention, you engage the viewer, pause and then knock it out of the park..

I love the way you structure your posts. Its like there is a cadence behind it all.

Huge Respect from the Lone Star State..

Hi Mike,

That's one of the nicest and most respected replies I've ever gotten. Yes, I take pride in my work and my writing. Like you, I've evolved my style to fit the needs. ;)

I'm impressed you would notice.

My wife Susan just watched a portion of the vid. Even she likes you. :D (Soccer mom from CT praising South Texas knife weapons maker... LOL!)

We hope to run into you at Blade. Thanks!

Great video. Thank you for all of the information. If I may ask a few questions (without calling and bugging you on the phone lol), how do you determine the angle for the profiling grind? Could I get the same result by using a solid block and setting the angle on the rest? What grit do you prefer for the profiling stage?

Thank you so much for all the info.

Jay

I just watched it , all of it, and coming from a man with two burned thumbs I both enjoyed it and appreciated it. Thanks for posting it.

Great post, I appreciate you taking time to contribute.

Take an 8" paper plate and a 1.5" wide ruler
Hold the plate up with your left hand like a steering wheel in a car and take the ruler and hold it @ 3 o clock.
Hold the ruler "level with the world" and move it slowly up and down from about 2 to 4

Closely observe the angle interface as you make vertical movements with the ruler.

You want the wheel to make initial contact about 1/3 up the blade preferably. It is more a matter of height in relation to the wheel than angle.

I simply angle my plates to relieve neck strain, minimize carpal tunnel and increase ergonomics

Stay Safe out there.

Respect.

The other thread got locked about the problem employee. Anyway it would not put me off from buying a knife, but was just thinking it might for others. I fully realize the reality shows are staged, faked, anything to get viewers. Congrats on the new baby. My daughter is going to turn 1 next week and just found out the next baby will be due in June.
