How to talk mom into letting me get a spyderco I'm 13

Show her your responsibility. Offer a deal. If you get better grades or if you improve your punctuation, then she will get you the knife. I got my first knife when I was 9. I showed both my parents a great amount of responsibility and they felt comfortable with me having it. I know overprotective mom's, I am married to one. Work with her, show her you can use the knives in the kitchen properly and safely, show her you are willing to make sacrifices to get it and she will come around quicly!

Good luck in your quest!

I think the scouts is a good idea to . It will give you a good reson to have a knife and teach you how and when to use it . It mite even help with your cooking who knows lol

what would a 13 year old like yourself use a spyderco for?

What wouldn't a 13 year old like him use a spyderco for?

I've been using and carrying knives since I could talk and think every one should carry one. I have never used the Spydercos your talking about, but I have fondled them. The Endura and Delica are nice, but the ones I felt weren't very smooth. I think it has to do with the washers, or lack thereof and the FRN handles weren't my favorite. The lock-up was decent but strong enough to get the job done. On the other hand the Manix 2 felt very stout and strong, the lock-up was tight and the lock was fun to play with. I think the Endura and Delica are better looking knives and probably way easier to EDC due to the size and weight but won't hold up to extreme use.

Have you thought about an OKC rat 1 or 2? Those are very nice, durable, and friendly to your pocket (figuratively and literally).

So you're telling me, that at age 13, you never had to open mail? Boxes? You never whittled? 13 years of age is a nice time to have a knife IMO, as long as that 13 year old is responsible.

I agree completely. As long as they're responsible, it's a great idea. There are a lot of things that require a pocket knife and it's a helpful thing to have :)

I agree anyone who does not know what a 13 year old boy would need a knife for either is to old to remember or raised by democrats.

At 13 I was more into knives than I am now. I had many pocket knives at age 7 . But I am 54 now and back then a pocket knife was not considered a weapon to kill other kids with.

in the 60's we also had our pocket knives at school . Ran to the corner store to buy beer for the grown ups (and they sold it to us) and I went hunting with my cousins...WITH REAL RIFLES!

the 70's were not bad either.

I've been carrying knives since I was 8 or 9. Tell your mom to reach around and yank that giant pole from her a$$ ER!!! sphincter I mean Gluteus Maximus. ;)

I think you should remove or edit that post because if his mom comes and see that it surely will not help.

Plus it is not really appropriate language for a 13 year old.

Funny how immorality is okay in todays world yet a 13 year old teenager can't have a knife or watch action movies with shooting because that is considered violent. But talk about premaritual sex and other things is ok?

What happened to adults in the last 30-40 years?

BOOOO HOOOO, Your telling me a$$ isn't appropriate language for a 13 year old? Is that a joke?

At 13 I learned to break the tips off of Buck 110's and that it took a long time on the stone to put a functional tip back on the blade.Knots on wood were not my friend and to use the proper tool for the proper job. I learned to work with my hands at a young age and skills were passed from father to son. I think 13 is a good age to learn a little responsibility owning a knife and learning to respect it as a tool is a great step.I commend this young man and that he want's to talk to his mother which shows he is trying to do the right thing.Bravo!

Does one really need a pocket knife with 13?
To be honest I don't need one with 35. Show me any card board box I couldn't fold or destroy with bare hands :p
Even in the army we never really needed a pocket knife. Last ditch Spyderco charge? Unlikely and why not a fixed bayonet? Cutting little twigs for camouflage? Why not rip them from a branch by hand?
Hunting and gutting a deer? Wouldn't really like to clean the blood out of a folder every time.
Even if there is no real need, folders are fun and it was never hard to find an excuse to use one :) But need? No way! Oh wait. Once I had to open tins while camping --> SAK
My daughter got her 1st knife with 4. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Etching-Walk-Through-w-pics?highlight=biltong She doesn't need it but likes it a lot.
Just be honest with your mom and she might understand. If she feels you invented some "needs" to convince her it will be easy to say no. If however you tell her that you like it, think its cool or whatever applies in your case she might understand. Give her some time and be subtle but keep at it. Maybe even watch a movie with her which shows some boys in your age doing boy things.

13 OP
35 Me (saying that I never needed a folder my whole life but still have some for fun and always find a use even if I dont need to)
4 my daughter (who also doesn't need a knife but still likes it and has her parents supporting this)

OP should be clear if he really needs one or just wants one and why and then try to communicate this to his mom.

O.K. At 13, at 35, at 4. I was confused by "with". :D

Prove your responsible first. Talk to her. You have a multi-tool now, does it have a blade? If so it may be she views knives such as Spyderco's as weapons more than tools, which is quite common. If that is the issue you have 2 choices try to convince her it's a tool in your hands and the knife your looking at is a superior tool for your needs and you damn well better be able explain why it's superior to a SAK or Leatherman to you before you walk down this road. Or you can learn to enjoy multi-tools and slip joints, I have several cheaper slip joints being delivered right now and I tend to enjoy them more than my modern one hand folders.

Oh and you screwed up with hiding a knife from her, so you have to work on regaining that trust your 13 not 30. Life is full of choices and you have to live with consequences with those choices, get used to it. Even when your an adult you still have these problems, wait till you get a GF/married/etc and you have to worry about your decisions and consequences of them.

And lastly if your 13 carrying a multi-tool or slip joint will be a far less hassle if you ever get stopped by a cop so you might want to consider that. Those pocket clips scream knife to them. And to a lot of people knife + teenager = hoodlum. You can walk away from that profile more with a multi-tool or slip joint thanks to the perception of multi-tools being associated as tools and Macgyver. And those old school slip joints bring back memories of the knives a lot of our older relatives carried and they used them as cutting instruments not weapons and the media never portrays an SAK or case stockman as a knife of choice by a serial killer it's always a locking one hand folder or fixed blade.

lol, 13 year olds with knives. Don't pull out the mature argument as we all thought we were mature at 13. Even at 18, I would still consider immaturity a common thought
