Hunting and Trapping

Well, my wife (Cindy) and I leave in the AM for Gallatin County, IL, in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. I have deer and turkey hunted in that area on and off for about 30 years and enjoy it a lot. Big deep long hollows and ravines with long oak covered ridges. I am primarily a still hunter and this is an ideal place for that style of hunting. Meeting my brother and his daughter on the road so expect to have a wonderful 4 days. Will post some pics when I return! Hoping to put my JK Improved Bowie thru a good work out.

good luck!

Saw more deer today than I did all season last year. Could have counted the whiskers on a couple of them, had they stayed still long enough :D

Hopefully I don't regret passing them up.

Glad to hear you got to see lots of deer. That always makes a trip to the woods feel more successful.

As to the passed shots...my dad told me when I was a kid that "you never regret the shot you didn't take; it's the one's you take, but shouldn't have that cause problems".

I guess that's true, especially with questionable shots. But if I don't get another chance, I will be regretting not taking one of those deer that was standing broad side at 15 yards for several minutes.:D

Half way through firearms season for deer and I've only seen one very small buck. I didn't attempt a shot and have little faith I will see much more. This is by far the leanest crop of acorns I can remember. It may be a very long winter for the animals who depend on them. Hope everyone is enjoying the season, being productive, and staying safe. I've got four more days of hunting with a rifle.

This mirrors my experience this year. White oak mass crop is way down in KY. There are 3 of us that hunt a 200 acre farm and we're just not seeing the deer, mature bucks especially, that we usually do. The number and size of scrapes is way down and the deer are not in the places we've traditionally seen them. I hunted all weekend and only saw one doe with a fawn.
All that said, I try not to mark a hunts success on the deer I see or kill and just try to appreciate the luxury I have to live in a place I can hunt, on my own land no less, and that I am fortunate to not have to depend on my (meager) hunting ability to keep my family feed.

I haven't seen a single pecan on the ground either.

Last year at this time the pecans literally blanketed the ground. You couldn't even see the dirt for so many pecans.

This year, nothing.

Congrats, BTW!

Even though I didn't kill a deer, it is a great reason to be in the woods. There's nothing quite like being in the woods and watching it come alive in the mornings.
