I once killed a grizzly bear with a spoon. I was going to use my knife but I thought it would not be fair.

For all you people who choose to hunt bears with knives, you're probably the same people that use large fishing poles to catch sharks instead of jumping in the water and choking the shark to death.

Wimps.

I thought I was the only one who did the shark thing.

and, ems...the russkies picked that trick up from the Chinese...at least that's where I learned it..

lol Mike for some reason i bet if you would have been younger you would do it all over again with all the same old guys ...

To the tree huggers who find that unethical- good Lord.

'Tree hugger' ? me ? lol

No sportsman could ever condone that - it's a hillbilly trying to compensate and has nothing to do with hunting, plain and simple.

It certainly gives the bear a fighting chance
Didn't read the article to the end, apparently?

the article said:
And of course the other hunters opened fire on the bear
the article said:
The other hunters dismembered, prepared the bear.
The bear doesn't have a chance...it's going to die one way or the other. And what self respecting 'hunter' doesn't field dress his own game ? (kids excepted)

If I lose my sight picture, the bear gets away because I won't take a half-assed shot.
If I make a noise and he's off into the rhubarb, the bear gets away because I won't shoot him in the ass.
That's called ethical hunting and it's not just me. I haven't hunted from tree stands or blinds either for the same reason, but that's just me. Staking out a feeder ? Same thing. Don't get me wrong, if the SHTF ethics go out the window but then it's no longer hunting for sport, it's subsistence.

Sure I could have a freezer full of meat by taking every marginal shot and having a buddy back me up. A lot of hunters buy semis specifically to have a quick follow up, but if the shot is good you don't need a second one.

It's buttheads like this that PETA and their ilk like to showcase and that real hunters get branded with. But then, judging by the poll most respondents aren't (bear) hunters.

Which begs another line of questioning...if the whole point of preparedness is practice, how will you fill up the stewpot if you haven't developed the skills ? Besides, it's free-range meat free of commercial contaminants, antibiotics and hormones - and it tastes good.

This kind of wannabe BS would be funny if it wasn't so damaging to the public perception of hunters in general. I don't mean to come across as preachy, but Joe Public knows of hunting and hunters only by what he sees in articles like this and that's just not the reality.

And RR, +1 on the carebears, lol ! This fall I want to limit out on them. Finding the bloodtrail is a real b*tch though:D

Hell fight a bear with a knife I wouldn't fight a barehanded bear. Who has been selling bears knives is the economy that bad? wonder if bears likes nessies or what... maybe a big ole battle mistress..... Pat

I have hunted boar with a knife, so if I had to I would hunt bear with a knife, too. But only Kodiak and Polar Bears. Black bears are too weak for me.

Once, I even wrestled an 8' hammerhead shark to shore before I beat it to death with my fists. This was a few years ago now when I was in the Keys.

At least that's how I remember it...

Better check those knives. Could be Mantis is looking for new recruits...:)

lol, dipbait. Watching one tear into a rotten log with those sickles of destruction is a humbling experience !

Watching from a healthy distance that is...

He wants to hunt Africa now.
Perhaps we can suggest Cape Buffalo or maybe Hippo with a knife?
That would be pay-per-view at it's finest.
On the serious side, He's got a lot of guts to go after bear like that. I wouldn't.

:eek:I'd pay to see that!Hippos are deadlier than crocs & are responsible for more (human)deaths each year in Africa than any other animal!.....well except maybe the mosquito, with that nasty malaria & all;)

Killing a Bear is one thing , this dude has sex with them.

You know, those Russians are full of the brown stuff, I'm afraid. I would be more than "highly surprised" if Emelianenko had actually faced a bear with only a knife, let alone wounded, much less killed one. One thing you learn to know about Russians when you live next to them for some decades - they lie, in your face, and a whole lot. Most of the time, just to joke, of course.

That is EXACTLY my experience of russians. They are outrageous liars. I would assume the event that took place was absolutely nothing like the way it was described.

I have suspected for a long time that there must be some sort of cultural variance in the way "truth" is considered and that the russians have a different concept of what constitutes a true story or not. At least I hope that's the case, otherwise they're just a bunch of lying weasels.
