i am very disappointed with SOG knives. i have ordered 3 of them so far, and each one i have received has come with blade play. have i just been real unlucky??? i will not be buying any SOG products anymore, i am very angry. i bought a trident that came with play. next i tried a sog twitch XL hoping this would be better, again it had play. not having learned my lesson, i figured the 3rd times a charm, and ordered the mini vulcan; has noticeable vertical play. :grumpy:

Have you tried to contact them about your problems. I would bet they would be willing to help you. I would give it a try and see how they respond. GOOD LUCK! Kevin

I had a Tomcat 3.0 and traded here for a Pentagon Elite II with the 5" blade. Both of those locked up tight.

That sucks man. I have a sog mini x-ray vision that I bought about a year and a half ago. I am no longer fond of tanto points or serrations, but I will say that this is one of my beat up knives and it has held up great. Still no blade play of any kind. But if you are upset, sog does have good customer service and will make things right.

I have also heard a story on the forums that a customer did not want the same product when he sent it in for warranty because he did not trust it anymore, so they let him get something else of similar value. They have some pretty good multitools from what I have heard and I have a seal pup that I like, even though it does not see much use.

Hope everything works out for you. Give them a chance to make things right.

I have two SOG folders, including the Arcitech, but don't have the problem you mention. I'm surprised to hear a problem with the Vulcan, in particular.

I bought one of their knives and everything about it says cheapo...

From the materials to the design.

I couldn't give it away!

No one wanted it!

I wont buy anymore of their stuff.

other than they play they are excellent. thats why im disappointed, the mini vulcan and the twitch xl are two really fantastic folders. i guess i was just unlucky.

A certain amount of blade play is common enough in any folding knife. One of the tests I always run when I review a knife is to see how much vertical and horizontal blade play there are. Particularly if the knife has synthetic handles, there may be a little, and this is not a deal breaker if it is not extreme. Granted, that's a subjective measure.

I've been extremely pleased with all fo the SOG knives I've purchased and that I currently own. The Trident remains one of my favorite SOG folders.

Sorry to hear that, I've got a Spec Elite that I carry periodically and it's an outstanding knife. I'm thinking about picking up one of the Vulcans myself...

Phil, that's entirely full of scat.

If a folding knife has bladeplay it was not properly engineered and as such should be relegated to the scrap heap.

Bladeplay ivolving the handles indicates a complete lack of structural integrity and as such I'd never own it.

For the funds invested in the SOG's as described above, the OP would be halfway to a Sebenza by now and I've never seen one with blade-play.

Vertical movement indicates the knife is not safe to use as the lock is not properly engaging or the blade stop is not engaging if a slip-joint. I'd immediately send those back for repair or replacement, or sell them off/ return them and go towards a Sebenza and be done with it.

BM axis locks seem to have little play as well, and there was a guy selling a BM Pinnacle around recently for about $200. I also recall a Spyderco Paramilitary having excellent lockup as well and no play.

This is just observation based on about 30 years of knife use, so feel free to disagree. I do not write reviews nor do I have any stake in a knife company or publication. I just think there are too many good knives available to waste time with crappy ones.

You'd be throwing away an awful lot of perfectly good factory knives, then. The fact is, there may be a certain amount of vertical or horizontal play in a folder, especially one with plastic handles, and as long as that is not an extreme amount, there's nothing wrong with the knife. You may disagree about how much is too much, though, and that's fine. When I test a knife that has no play, I'm very pleased to report that, but I've also tested knives that had a little play one way or the other, and most of them were also perfectly functional and not what I'd consider "crappy."
