i am very disapointed with sog knives

Im a fan of AUS-8 steel but damn thats the best steel they use, thats why im not into SOG knives.

well, the steel on the vulcan is seki city vg10, wich is good. however, the vulcan costs almost 100 dollars. you can buy a spyderco with seki city japanese vg10 for about half the price.

for the extra money i paid for the vulcan mini, i expect zero play. the play is minor, i just dont like any play because i have bought cheap 20 dollar folders that locked up tight, so i really expect a 100 dollar folder to be able to lock up as well.

also i agree with phil. there are plenty of knives that have play that are still good. i had a spyderco endura that hada bit of play, so i used it as my work knife. i put the knife through hell, thinking it was inferior because of the play, and yet it never failed and withstood incredible punishment. i work in construction.

I've never been disappointed with any SOG I ever bought.Fit,finish & function were all excellent.Great company in my opinion.
Could just be bad luck, try their CS.I hope they make it right for you.

If you guys want to play with an improperly locking knife, feel free. Fingers are a bitch to re-attach and the girls really are not all that turned on by scars - I have a few neat ones and they are not working as advertised.

Phil, about those knives with the crappy lock (which translates to crappy knife)

I do not buy or I send back any knives with play in the lock. They just are not supposed to have it. If you have handle flex in with blade play, that's that is more of the knife telling you that this is not a good thing to have and get rid of it.

As far as being a "work knife" versus what, a serious knife, your call. I'm not trusting the only fingers I have to a crappy lock.

Sorry, as I get older and notice that it takes a little longer for a slight break, dislocation or suture to heal than five years ago, I see no reason to introduce the problem of improperly made or inferior gear into the solution. Buy the best you can afford, and if it gives you an issue, get it fixed or replace it. Would you accept a firearm with an iffy safety or lockup? If not, then why a broken knife with an iffy splint?

OP has a very valid concern - send this stuff to SOG and have it made right, and keep on them until it is right.

Well, that's my point; I don't agree that minor blade play indicates this. I think factory knives, commercial production knives, quite often exhibit this and it will usually be within what I would consider acceptable tolerances. I have indicated that this is, of course, a subjective measure, but I think it's unrealistic to expect every production knife to lock up like a bank vault or be considered defective. More power to you (and the knife) if it does, but many won't, and this does not mean they are "crappy" or otherwise broken within certain limits.

I'm NOT taking sides here, but if I ever bought a medium to high quality knife with ANY sort of blade play,I would send it back.Plain & simple.
I don't know if it effects the lock-up or not.I just expect more from the knives I buy (Quality & Customer Service)
The manufacturer should make it right.

I'm not trying to be a dick or overly pedantic or anything but I think we need to quantify what, exactly is a little, or a lot, of blade play. I have knives that have blade play, I'm sure everyone does, but I also have knives where the blade play, if any, is so small as to be almost undetectable.

For example, right now, as I type this, I'm playing with my BM mini grip. I honestly can't see any vertical at all and as for side to side, if I push hard enough I can just see some movement but it's possible that even that is the metal itself flexing rather than movement on the pivot. I've never detected any play at all in my Sebbie. It may be true, technically, to say all folders have blade play but, on some of them, you're going need a microscope to see it.

I've got a few SOGs, all older fixed blades. As for their folders I only have the Trident, and I can understand why anyone that has one mentions blade play in these knives. It was sloppy enough (vertical and horizontal) that I haven't bothered to carry it. I think part of the problem is the Zytel they use. No liners combined with plastic washers is a formula for a bad experience. For the price, I would expect SS liners and PB washers. Seems like most other companies can provide these things, and at price points lower than SOG. I simply don't trust the knife, and if I don't trust it, why would I think of selling it to someone else? It sits, boxed up, and on the shelf.

I own a lot of other folders of other brands that have no vertical play, and barely noticeable horizontal play, if any at all.

SOG used to make some great fixed blades, but that was a while back. When camping the only SOG I use now is the Seal Pup. Holds a decent edge, nice ergos, and if I lose it, no big deal. It serves as a back-up to the RC-4.

I will say that the spyderco chinook and manix are both reported to have occasional blade play, and it has been said that a certain amount of blade play in these knives is normal. Those are also, arguably, the strongest locks on production folders period. so I wouldn't say that a little play play indicates a "crappy" knife

Different people have different expectations. I personally get irritated by bladeplay on my new knives and I'm perfectly fine if they developed some bladeplay over years of use.

New knives from medium to high end (like what someone else said) should not have bladeplay for me.
