ZZ - I wouldn't call 16 "early"...I was thinking more about the 14-year olds. Unless you are an "uber child", I don't think you can develop the maturity and experience that I associate with the Eagle rank in 3 years...5 years, yes...3 years, no. Leadership is learned by experience, and I don't think 3 years is long enough to really learn unless, perhaps, you are a 95th percentile stud. It takes longer than that for the Army to turn a Lieutenant into a Captain (or in Navy terms, an Ensign into a Lieutenant). I've seen too many Eagles at 14 that I know they all aren't really the top 5% of our youth (give or take). They all typically come from the same few Troops in a District.

Well, my only comment to you is that not all young Eagle Scouts come from eagle mills. Not all of young Eagles are "too young". I was a very young Eagle. Maybe I was an "uber" child. But I rather doubt that. I was in a similar situation to ZZ, in that all I did was Scouts. I had older and younger Eagles in my own troop as a scoutmaster. The troop was quite large, and while we had quite a few Eagles, I can assure you ALL of them earned the rank. And all were as different as snowflakes.

I'm jonesing for my RBK. Just putting that out there.
My great hope is that it will satisfy my need for a BIG knife in a way the 9 hasn't. I managed to quell a great deal of firearm lust by finally getting a single centerfire rifle (.30-30), so hopefully this will chill me out with the choppahs so I can concentrate on makin' stuff. Then the 9 can be my backup for my second location where I keep a pile of blades.

Just out of curiosity, is there some reason you don't just make a big knife for yourself, daizee?

One day I will... it's waaay down the priority list, and all my experience is in the 1-6" range so far. I'm creeping into the 7" range soon. But 15"? That's gonna have to wait.
And the prospect of hand-sanding ('cause you know I would) that much steel is daunting.

Better put some pics of the .30-30 in the firearms thread. Years ago a friend of mine since high school bought a Marlin 336 at walmart back when they were only $265. Fast forward two years and his wife is pregnant with their first so he offers to sell me the rifle for $200. I had always wanted a 336 so I jumped on it. (he had only fired one box of shells through it to boot!) well then I move to Colorado and I could use a little extra cash so I start liquidating some guns that I don't shoot much (I only regret 2 of the several I sold) and the 336 gets sold since I've only put a box or two of shells through it in the years I owned it. Another two years or so goes by and I ask myself "what self-respecting gun lover and outdoorsman doesn't have a nice wood stocked lever action .30-30? So I found myself another used 336 because I like the curved grip on the stock more than the Winchester 94 (which is still a great gun, I just like the looks of the Marlin) But I still haven't shot it yet. I should probably do that...

I'm excited for the RBK too but if I have to wait a week or two I might as well wait to order one rather than plunk down the cash now. Or place the order and have the money suddenly get yanked from the account when I'm not expecting it when the knife finally ships.

So I woke up this morning and had the bad idea of driving 6 hours to Four Conrers Monument on a whim, no plan or anything. I get on I25 south and just as I get out of town the windshield wipers come on by themselves (I thought I fixed that with the new switch  ) So I don't feel like going on a mini-roadtrip with my wipers on the whole time so I turn around and head home. They shut off and come on a few times on the way back but I also notice the water temp is just a hair higher than normal, maybe only 10 degrees but it's odd because it's not hot out and the AC isn't on. Sure enough, when I get back to my apartment my fan isn't locked up even though the truck is at operating temp. Might be that the clutch locks up at a little warmer temp but it's maybe a $40 part and the coolant is good. Actually I think it's about time I convert to and electric fan. I've read that I could pick up a whole MPG by doing that.

But right now I'm looking for something fun to do closer to home so Waldo my old K5 Blazer doesn't kill me in gas.

I dreamt last night I drove all night to SMKW met Ethan and bought an RBK. Then I woke up and was disappointed. :(

Had a little fire with the kiddos yesterday. I have a surplus of wood and tree nonsense I'm trying to get cleaned up, so I've been lighting fires at almost every opportunity....

Oh no my knoife!

I really like the orange scales on my bk-15. Now I want to paint my bk-16's bright yellow. Good idea? Bad?
It would require buying paint...

Doc - I'm pretty sure all the Beckerheads are "uber"! The danger in me making such a generalized statement is that there are always exceptions to every rule. But my experience (which could be different from yours) is that much under the age of 15 and, to me, there seems to be a little more growing room for maturity and/or leadership skills. And good on you for maintaining high standards as a Scoutmaster.

Dang it. I already hated thieves but now I hate them even more.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I'm still cleaning up my warehouse property so I can sell it. Awhile back, someone (1 or more people) broke in and what they didn't steal, they trashed.

While cleaning some more today, it dawned on me that one of the things that was stolen was the LVTP7 tread section I was given back in 1979 by the Marine unit deployed on my ship when they made me an honorary Marine for saving a sinking LVT and the Marines in it. They had painted it gold and in red letters painted their unit number, the date they gave it to me, with my name and rank over "Honorary Marine".

I'm sure they stole it because it was 30 - 40 pounds of solid steel they could sell for 5¢ or 6¢ per pound but to me, sentimentally, it was priceless.

That does suck, Z. You still have benefit of being an Honorary Marine, but it's nice to have a memento of the event.

Yeah, Greg, but dang it, not everyone could say they had an LVTP tread.

My mother had it on the raised hearth of the fireplace downstairs in the den. It was a great conversation starter. "What the hell is that?"

The only reason it was in the warehouse was that when my mother's house was in danger of flooding, a lot of stuff got moved out of the downstairs area and into my warehouse about 1/2 mile from her house. Furniture, books, appliances and such had been removed already, but that "heavy chunk of steel" was being left "for later".

What'cha make'n?
I'm just fooling around mostly. I need to make file guide, so I need to be able to harden it. Sssooo decided to try and build a temporary small forge just to do it and tested it to see if I could harden a piece of scrap stock. The piece of scrap I ground into a micro Nessmuk kinda thing. Worked like a charm, next to make something to help me make stuff. The Micromuk is just for goofs.

Finally getting the hang of my new(-ish) release:
