First and foremost everyone should be welcome and thanked for their comments and opinions.

Public forums such as BFC are important for individuals to voice their concerns and interests in the knife community.

BFC like any other commercial organization requires money to operate. That was never in question. The advertising banner ad dealers, BFC, and members ALL benefit from BFC's existence. Take away any one of those elements, a reciprocal foundation of trust, and the symbiotic nature of this forum would dissolve.

Comments were made...

...America had a free enterprise system. Do any of you complain about any other dealers advertising and taking away your business?

That's right, no one complains about that because those were the "rules of engagement" laid down and understood by the participating subscribers in the BFC program.

Regarding our free enterprise system, ABSOLUTELY! We do operate within this context. This type of system encourages business' to compete with each other thru offering services and /or products that may better suit the customer's requirements. When some one pays a business for a service or product then that's what should be expected and delivered.

When you pay for New York Strip we do not expect hamburger, when you pay for a Stoner .308 we do not expect a Lorcin .25, or when you pay for a Durango we do not expect a Honda Civic.

It was Mr. Turber who offered the dealers a service with banner ads, and that is what some of us elected to do. We chose to pay Mr. Turber for this offered service. Those of us who have been advertising from the first year of BFC's existence have been some of it's most ardent supporters. Understand, BFC asked for our financial support thru paid banners and many of us didjust that.

Best of all all the BFC members benefit!
biggrin.gif

Improved selection, prices, & service are all hallmarks of healthy competetion.

That to most of us, that concept is already clear and a given. Heated words, and reactionary lynchmob mentality unfortunately muddles what is really at hand.

What has been lost in these recent posts/exchanges is the underlying issue.

Once we filter thru all the convoluted rhetoric, schoolyard comments such as "whining", etc, etc, what was probably better put to the forefront and said was,

"The very nature of the service offered by BFC to its banner ads dealers have been changed. The promise of a level venue where dealers would compete only against other independent dealers, has been altered. The "referee"(BFC) is no longer a neutral entity and has "entered it's own team". In effect, what was paid for was not delivered in full, and what can we all do to insure equity amongst all the particpants involved."

One positive result that precipitated from all of these debates, is that at this point in time, we now have pledges from Spark to insure an equal playing field for the all players. If we have pledges from the Mike and Spark, who hold all the cards regarding the logistics of running this public venue, then speaking for myself, that's just what I wanted to hear.
wink.gif

As a business owner who wishes for his business to survive the best it can thru fair play and honest hard work, I do not think it is not too much to ask for. Myself, and I am sure some of the other dealers, simply would like to receive what we paid for and be able to have continued exposure to offer our wares...

If that is not the proper thing to expect, then I ask for advice and some sound rationalization behind my misunderstanding.

I believe every hardworking honest American understand those basic principles in this free market economy:

-Making a living thru a honest day's work to support himself and his family.
smile.gif

-And to get what was promised and paid for with your hard earned money.
smile.gif

True, this does not always occur for whatever reason, but we should all try and follow those tenets as best as we possibly can.

We ALL have a vested interest in BFC's survival. However expressing concerns does not make those individuals,
...malcontents....

or should be instructed to

...In other words, LEAVE!!....

It is everyone's right to voice their dissent. I can think of better solutions to resolving a conflict than having some one tell some one else to "go away"
rolleyes.gif
.

A few weeks from now this will all be but forgotten, I just hope that everyone involved can find a equitable resolution by that time.

Despite what anyone else may or may not have said EVERYONE supports BFC.

Speaking for myself I know i have already approached Mike off list, days before this ever became a topic for public scrutiny.

Perhaps it may have been best to restrict this issue to the dealers only forum, and as it now stands this should best be left to the dealers and BFC to hash out.

Regardless, the knife consumer will continue to benefit, whatever the outcome

One question. How long can someone be expected to carry the finacial burden of this site while others go along for the free ride? Lets be realistic.

Seems like we would all benefit by taking time to improve business practices to be able to compete instead of whining. As far as the the knife industry dishonesty, and insincerety are usually "flushed away" rather quickly. Artificial hype is usually an indication to me that whatever is being hyped won't be around for long in this industry. Look at the makers and manufactures that have been successful and get to know those people and you will understand. I have no problems at all with the solution Mike and Spark are going with, but I know and trust them both.

Do not understand the problem when a person is able to create a business that is successful. If it causes a problem, the best way to solve it is to do your best to compete in an ethical manner.

Some one above posted an idea about voluntary donations to BFC and getting an identifier like "Patron." This idea was also offered last year I believe when the money/expense issue came up.

Perhaps, it's time. Say $25.00/year for those interested. I wold support that.

Way to many people are missing the point. When this site first came up, people were invited. No strings attached, all for free. Dealers were invited, no strings attached, to help increase traffic. Well, the site got expensive to run, and BF tried forum knives, t shirts and a magazine. None worked. So, Mike enters the retail market, right or wrong, the bills have to be paid. What really gets me though is how BF has treated some of the people. It has been posted in other forums that the non-advertising dealers and some individuals that didnt buy all the BF stuff are freeloaders, and burdens and leaches. Well, sorry, nobody made you start bladeforums. Dont get me wrong, I am glad its here. If you have to start a retail bit to keep this going, then so be it. But, dont continiue to call people freeloaders and burdens when YOU are the ones that invited people and dealers in the first place. You said you would NEVER compete against your advertisers. Now, we all know that you have to in order to keep this site, but that cant be blamed on anybody. I do think that banner advertisers should be offered something for compensation, a refund, or a few free months. IMO, BF will be competing directly in an unfair way. How you ask? By sympathy. BF comes on here, with the "we give you this site, how can we pay for it". BF refers to the "freeloading" dealers who are a burden to BF while "lining their pockets" at the expense of BF. Maybe so, but remember who was encouraging those dealers to come here in the first place. If you wanna start a retail bit, fine. I think some of your advertisers were simply caught off guard when they renewed their banners on the assumption that you really were not going to compete. Simply tell them, that you have to, or this site is history. But, dont come on and say, we have to because the crummy dealers wouldnt support us, or these rotten people wouldnt buy the blue native. I hope the above is clear, and gets my point across.

Richard

Richard, I think you came across clearly. Am sorry that what started out as a catfight between Cliff and I has caused the boiling pot to boil over into this mess. Now we all look bad.

Mike,

Since you are looking for ideas to help raise money for the forum, here is one that I haven't seen mentioned yet. How about only allowing custom makers who have banners to post in the Makers For Sale Forum? They too have been getting a free ride and are making a profit off of BF. They most certainly are making more money than I have made by selling factory knives the last week and a half. If that is too unpopular, would consider charging $1 for every new thread started in the Knives For Sale forum. As an individual, I have bought and sold knives there many times and feel that is a very cheap price to advertise a knife. Most hard core BF users have bought and sold knives there so many times they are borderline dealers anyway.

Respectfully,
John

What BF was and what it is now are two different things. It has evolved and that's the way it is in cyberland. As far as I'm concerned, whatever Spark and Mike have to do to keep this forum running, so be it. What I've gained in the short time I've been visiting here has been incredible. I learn more here about knives in a month than a year's subscription to a handful of magazines.

Just because it was once a completely free ride, doesn't mean that it has to stay that way (e.g., remember when tech support for software was always free?). IMHO, Mike and Spark are victims of their own success. Somebody has to pay for the popularity of this site and God knows Mike and Spark have tried 'bout everything. But relying on sheer generosity has not been effective. So they gotta do what they gotta do. People can still leave whenever they want. Or they can stick around and particpate in one of the most successful and well-run forums on the Internet. But if you want to play, sooner or later you have to pay. Free rides inevitably disappear.

In the case of BF, this is no get rich quick scheme that's been implemented. This is a make ends meet program. If you can't see that, then you are missing the reality of the situation.

Recently (today, in fact) I decided to futz around and get into knifemaking. So I spent the previous week searching over BF, looking for information on what equipment to buy and I placed my order today. Without BF, I really would have been clueless. For instance, I ordered a Grizzly grinder. Based on the posts I've read here, it looks like it will do what I need it to do as a hobbyist knifemaker. I've never even heard of this grinder until reading about it here. And on and on. I searched on drill presses and band saws and made my choices based on the information that was available here. What a hell of a resource!

Thanks BF for keeping this forum going. I sure as hell appreciate it. Whatever you got to do, do it. If it's more than I can afford, then I'll leave. We all have that option. Until then, I have zero complaints about any of the changes. And I can tell you up front if I had to pay a subscription fee (just like those magazines I only get 6 a year of) it would be worth it. In terms of the amount of information you have access to, this forum kicks butt.

I am a pretty new member only because I recently got the internet. I must say, I absolutly love this Forum. Spark and Mike, you guys are great and do a wonderful job. I enjoy the conversation, the questions & answers, the bonding and the common thread that ties us all together here, namely knives. I really appreciate the fact that you run a really "clean" forum (ie. language, ill humor, sexually explicit content or pictures, ect.). And in this day and age you can hardly find ANYTHING that you can say that about. I know it's out of the question, but I would pay some sort of fee to be part of this whole thing and almost feel guilty that I use it for free. Just wanted to let you know some people out here do appreciate you.

I'm very pleased at the opening of the onestopknifeshop. Now I have a great place to buy knives and a good reason to buy knives there.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brothers keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay me vengeance upon you." Ezekial 25:17-Samuel L. Jackson

I agree with Old Three Toes. Being new to the forum and the internet, I was amazed at the information I found here. I have always loved knives and never knew how much I didn't know. I personally thank you guys for starting this forum. It has provided me great entertainment and I enjoy checking in each day to see what is going on. And for that, I have no problem paying a fee. I have sold, bought and trade some knives, in my short time here. So far, I have had nothing but a wonderful experience. I too, think a charge for the sale forums would be reasonable. I can't run an ad in my local paper and instantly reach 5000 knife lovers. People must remember, this is America. You have the right to run YOUR business how you want to run it. Sometimes money issues force us to make choices that may not be popular with some. Because we live in this country we all have the right to form and voice our opinions. From behind our computers, in an unknown corner of the world, it is often too easy to blast people and forget that someone needs to keep this playground up and running. And that, my friends, cost money. Guys, you are never going to make everyone happy. Just stay the course and do what you feel you have to do. So far, I think you're going just fine.

Good luck with the new store.

Yes, fees for selling or buying as individuals like myself may be one solution. I sure would support it. And maybe some membership fee would be necessary. What ever it takes to keep this forum going is alright with me. Like others have stated ,many of us have gotten a free ride when buying and selling knives.I say do what you have to do to keep this great site going. This is a great place for knife nuts. The best place I think.

You have done us all a great service by running this site. You have to make a buck now and then to keep your head above water. If some don't like it that you open a knife store to keep from running in the red, that's the way the ball bounces. They can either get over it or go elswhere. I would have advised you to tell them to kiss a fat hen's butt, but that's not nice so I'll not do that.

I am reading and I am listening. I was always told by my computer science teacher that I have two ears and one mouth and that I should use them proportionately.

Of course if you look at the number of posts I have you would think I did not learn a damn thing

The one promise I did make, that I promise here again, and give you my word, is that the member section of this site will always be FREE. I will never, ever charge a member to be a member. Like Spark said, the day we start charging members is the day we die. I will and have entertained many ideas. I have also been to other forums and watched them die for lack of funds or what ever.

I have been emailing back and forth with several dealers. A vocal protractor, to some extent, is Patrick Ma of Triple Aught Design. He has shown one of my emails to him. Well before he does it again I will beat him to the puch
smile.gif

Patrick,

I understand your points and your position. I only hope you understand mine. I am a very fair person. Those who know me well know that all too well. In fact I may be too fair as I have people tell me all the time that I am an idiot for not milking more money out of BFC. According to the internet marketing strategy course and studies I have completed, I should be making $25,000 a month just on BFC. Well that is not happening, and I doubt it ever will as our industry is proliferated with .......

Anyway, I think if you have watched me over time you know down inside that I am a very real person. Yes I am eating crow right now and to say that I would never compete with dealers was not a wise choice. If I was already retired, then the statement would of had more credence.

I am working on several projects with several manufacturers to help the Internet dealers. If you guys want to benefit from what I will be doing then I would suggest that I get cut some slack. This is not a threat but I am really working on something cool and guess what? Several manufacturers are listening. My plan will work and all will benefit. Correction, the leaches on the net will not benefit, only the legitimate dealers will. I will be meeting with many manufacturers at the blade show in a private seminar. Several chose to go one on one, and a couple will have me work at their facility to train their sales and marketing team.

Anyway what seems to be important at the moment is that BFC stays alive and yes, I WILL do anything and everything possible to keep it afloat. It is the members who I cater to and the dealers can help but keep in mind I am in no way stupid as most dealers are easily making more that $50 profit per month of BFC. If they can not afford $50 a month then they do not need to be calling themselves a dealer. Is that harsh? No it is fact.

I started WOW with one table at a flea market. I paid $26 a week in rent AT A FLEA MARKET! These people are bitching about $50 a month? Man I have some strong words in my mind right now but I will bite my tongue.

I wish I could tell you more but you will find out much soon enough. Take care, and yes I do consider you a friend.

Yes I called some dealers leaches. That is strong language and Spark made similar comments.

A good argument was brought up that is was low of us to call dealers freeloaders and leaches after we invited them here. Well yes we did invite them here and they did enjoy the free ride. I remember going to a local park as a kid and getting free rides. Then the park's expenses went up and they had to charge a quarter for the rides. I enjoyed the ride enough to pony up the quarter.

When Spark and I built this site, we did it for the members and not necessarily the dealers. We invited everyone. We had the exchange area and never charged anything. At first we had no banners either but I had full intention of putting them in. I guess I was too forward about releasing the expenses of this site and it was viewed as whining. Then we got slapped for excessive bandwidth charges and we had to get a server and so on, and the rest in in Spark's post.

So now I will not whine any more. I have thrown so many things at you folks over the last year that you are sick of seeing them and I am sick of doing them. So here is what I am GOING to do.

I started www.onestopknifeshop.com and it will be the SOLE source for funds for this site along with the banners and various other plans I have. The member will never feel the obligation to support this site with raffles, Shirts, accesories or whatever. I want the member to enjoy the experience here and not feel like the are walking into a store with a bell ringer or begger out side.

Ya admit it folks, you have adjusted your path at times to avoid a begger or a bell ringer. I do not want you to even remotely feel that here.

We pretty much stopped all efforts after the raffles ended. I then decided that enough is enough. As you can tell by looking at 1SKS, we obviously did not plan this long ago as that site is just now taking shape. Anyone can look at network solutions and see when we registered.

I will work quietly in the background to keep the site running in the position it is.

Enjoy

Spark is right though- try to charge for membership to this site, and watch it sink. Sure, maybe the people posting to this thread will ante up- I sure would, but that's a real small percentage of what's it up to now, 5500 members?

As soon as Bladeforums says, "OK, you want to use this site? That'll be $25.00 a year, please." (which incidentally, I WOULD pay- seems like a bargain to me...) A huge portion of traffic is going to do the easy thing, which is type in the URL for a site that doesn't charge- rather than grabbing for the checkbook.

"Remember the Alamo"? Well, remember the magazine, it's a perfect example of this. We all said, (yes- you and I) "Gee, great Mike, we'll subscribe! But that's not what happened is it?

I'd rather just talk about knives! But business is business. I think I'll go find that info again on sending a donation to support BF. Even if Mike and Spark won't charge us, it's about time I returned the favor- at least in some small part.

ive noticed through all of this that the main people in question here, have said nothing. the BFC advertiser's.
WHERE ARE ALL OF YOU ?
what do you all think of this ?
we are the one's involved in this more so then the members themselves.
we all make a living off knives or such related wares. why is it that noone has an opinion on how to help Mike and spark with this dilema. we surely dont want them to
shut the forum down do we?
i know i dont but i also do not want to support it $$ myself. my hats off to Mike and spark for there continued commitment to the forums and making it as good as it possibly can be.

Patrick,
i must agree with you 100% on your earlier post. i feel all the advertising dealers should support patrick on this.
dont sit back and let all this fall on deaf
ears. speak out advertising dealers. or is it just Patrick and now me in here alone?
all of you advertisers are included here not just US.

Dear Spark,

Ever since i discovered BF, i've learned much and made new friends. If you require a yearly fees to maintain this site, just let me know where to send the money! To those who have condamned this place, LEAVE is all i can say! Long live BF!

There have been some very good replies on this thread(Patrick Ma's in particular).

I do have one question: Why haven't the knife magazines such as Blade, Knives Illustrated, etc. stepped in to support BladeForums when it is evidently in their best interest to do so?

that is a great point. its more then a question. bladeforums has advertised with blade magazine. why hasnt blade advertised with bladeforums. theres plenty of magazines other then blade as well. they should be advertiseing here as well it would have to help the sale's of the magazine's and if nothing else support the one's that support you. in this case BF's has supported blade shouldnt blade support BF's

Another idea, how about getting the manufacturers involved. Like having them pay to showcase their wares just like the dealers now must do. This place certainly is a rescource for the dealer as well as the consumer. I frequently hear about new and coming items from BF before I hear a word from any supplier.

Spark and Mike,

I'm another of the newer members. And it saddens me to see that these vendors don't appreciate that you could have really undercut their prices and made things miserable for them.

Before coming to BladeForums, I was not aware of the wealth of information that existed and the variety of knives available. I wonder how many $200 and $350 knives are sold to the average Joe on the street. Pretty low percentage, I'd bet. It could be that a large portion of some vendors' profits come from right here. So some get PO'd because you (really all of us) are opening a store. They shouldn't yell about losing a little money to gain quite a bit more. I would like to hear them offer suggestions. In the rest of the world nobody rides for free, or gets something for nothing. These folks think they're special or something?

Self preservation is not an evil thing. You folks behind the scenes provide us with a great opportunity to meet and talk with people worldwide. And you help to preserve the art of knifemaking, the knowledge of knife history, and the market for knife excellency. And we haven't had to pay a dime to enjoy it. I would like to say one last thing to those vendors that have publicly or privately complained about this new situation, but they already know it deep down inside. So I won't.

One suggestion. We recently changed all member classifications to "member". What would you think about special classifications for those that are willing and able to provide a yearly donation in different levels?

Try not to let this stuff get to you. If the stress gets too much, go cut something.
