I don't know if I should be happy for him or not...

I recently sold off a custom Justin made for me, because I wanted to get something different from him. I guess that was a big mistake! Glad I still have at least one RD.

Sounds like you RAT people would rather China make the Ranger knife, Then you could bitch about another company going over seas.

I like my Ontario RAT 3 , as much as my RC 3, My RAT 7 is also an awesome knife. I cant wait to see some of the OKC Ranger knives, I'll be first on the list to get one.

Don't worry man. It got a good home. :p

I wonder where this leaves the warranty. Will Ontario honor Justin's warranty? Even then, I wouldn't want my Ranger knife replaced with an Ontario should I ever need to send it in.

From my understanding Justin will still make custom knives. All the current Ranger Knives he will Warranty and all the new production ones with be through Ontario. This was also posted on the general forum.

Pre-Ontario Rangers and future customs will be warranteed by Justin:

THe production stuff will be as good or better than the current quality. I will continue to design and produce customs so no wories there. The warranty stays intact. The only difference will be if you got you blade from me you send it to me if you get it from Ontario you will send it to them.

We'll see if Ontario gets their QC act together for Justin in a way they were unwilling to do for Jeff and Mike. I was just thinking of selling my RD9 a couple days ago. But I'm better, now. :)

Welcome to BladeForums. Your first statement is silly. The concerns about Ontario making the Rangers is that Ontario does not have the QC and customer service that you get from Justin. If you have a problem with a knife made by Justin, he will go out of his way to make it right. Ontario's customer service is spotty at best.

Your second statement is your personal choice. Ontario has some nice knives scheduled. Not just the Rangers. If they ever decide to pull their heads out of their butts, I might actually buy one.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the purchase of RK is a backup plan, in case they lose the battle with RAT.

I'm going to shoot Justin an email to ask about the warranty, and see if he will still be doing custom work on the side. I'm sure he's away for a while, so a reply may take some time.

Eh. Ignore the last half of my post above. I was replying while Ken and boing were posting.

I hope its true that Justin will continue to do custom work. But I wonder if the same issue won't arise with his custom work and Ontario's Ranger line as has occurred between Ontario and Rat Cutlery. Won't his custom work compromise the desirability of the production line. Its all well and good to think that things will go as described, but in light of the way Ontario handled the arrival of Rat Cutlery on the scene, I'd be surpised if they sit by while Justin makes custom versions of the same knives they are producing.

Sorry about the blue I have help from a six year old:)

I was thinking this too. Ontario is coming out with a new line of knives in 5160. I assume the Rangers will be made along side them. I forget the MSRP on these, but it was pretty high. I think it was around $200. So even marked down for retail, Justin's customs will have to go way up in price to not be considered a threat.

Now I may be off my rocker on that price. I'll see if I can find the video I saw it on.

OK, it seems I was off on the price of the 5160 knives from Ontario. These are the new Spec-Plus knives. They will retail at $80 - $100.

I would expect the Rangers to be a bit more considering that they will be thicker and have the Ranger name. So these Ontario productions should end up costing around the same as, or a bit more, than the current Ranger line. Considering that Justin doesn't currently charge much for custom work on his knives, I imagine he will have to hike up prices significantly to not be considered competition.

Link to Vid. Click on the Ontario video on the right side.

My understanding is that Ontario will own the rights to Justin's existing production designs (or some of them). He mentioned focusing on new designs for his future custom work, so I would guess that he won't be doing custom jobs of the designs that Ontario purchased, and won't be considered competition for Ontario's Ranger market.

Of course, Ontario having shown what they're made of, and not knowing what the specifics of the contract are, all bets are off. But one of the key points Ontario used to rationalize their action against RAT was that the new RC line was substantially similar to the old RAT line, and hurt Ontario's market share on that basis.

WOW...ugh WOW,

I JUST talked to Justin early this afternoon at the Bladeshow, but I had to leave a bit early and missed this entirely!!

However, we did spend some time talking about a new custom design I had in mind and he was saying just mail him the draft, specs..etc. So I assume he will still be doing customs.
I can't believe I left before hearing this, very sad.

LONG LIVE AMERICAN MADE KNIVES!
That post is either pretty ignorant or pretty stupid. I'm hoping you haven't read the other posts on this forum and are just ignorant of what we think.

In that vein, Most of the people here have Ontario RATs (me included) and many, if not most of us have no intention of getting rid of them. Second, I don't think anyone here wants any American knife to go overseas (including Ontario sourcing them overseas, which they do on some of their lines). We also don't like Ontario trying to f#^% over another American knife company, especially the one that gave them one of their most popular product lines.

Personally, I hope Ontario does them right and doesn't try to f#^% Justin over.

As for other posts about Justin making customs, having to hike prices, etc. I don't think it's a problem. Think about it, the most common customizations I see people getting on Ranger knives are different grinds, drop/spear versus clip points, etc. Stuff that will make them substantially different from the Ontario models, and that they wouldn't want to bother to tool up for. Big companies can't survive tooling a production line for short-run or individual customs.

i read through most of these but i'm still a little confused. is rat=ranger same thing? so did rat cutlery go to ontario knives?

No, RAT and Ranger are two seperate companies. RAT HAD a colaboration with Ontario up until a year or so ago when thing unravled and have now gotten fairly ugly. Lawyers, suing, accusations of misconduct, the whole 9 yards.

Now we come to find out that Ranger, another good, small knifemaker, has joined forces with the currently evil empire of Ontario. The drama continues.

I'm not that concerned. Justin is a fairly smart guy and I'm sure he's aware of the RAT/Ontario situation. He most likely has this all clearly laid out in a contract to protect his assets. I think he learned from Jeff and Mike's troubles. Now he just needs to find a way to make Ontario honor their contracts......

I do believe Justin will be continuing to make customs, He asked me for some of the G-10 that I have been giving to knife makers, if he was not going to be making them, he would have no need of the G-10, Margaretta Green as Kerry Hampton calls it.

Yeah, I agree, Long Live American-Made Knives. As long as they are made legally and not pirated here in the USA like they were made in China...just like OKC does.
