I don't think so??

What RokJok said.

When you strike something at 90 degrees you have a great deal of mass behind the very edge. If the edge rolls it has backup. On steel like INFI or properly heat treated and tempered S-7 and several others, you can actually expect little damage from a 90 degree strike on a 10penny nail. If you strike something at 45 degrees, you have very little mass out to the left or right for backup, and thus should predict greater damage than would result from a 90 degree strike.
It's one thing to believe in a steel because a lot of people have a lot to say about it. It's another thing to believe in it because you understand it a bit. I like infi not because it's perfect, but because it brings so many properties together so well. It's gonna fail. Just not as badly as the competition in most cases. Don't let a realistic and repeatable test get your panties in a wad. That said, I'd love to see some repeats.

But in the meantime let's not turn this into some replica of an old "I love mick strider" thread. Otherwise Jerry might have to tell someone to lick his nads, which would be fun and all, just not very helpful.

Also note, Rob Simonich used a Battle Mistress as a benchmark. That ought to say something.

Props to Hossom for bringing out a strong test and some strong test results. The more you know, the better prepared you are.

If you want to see the pics, join. Jerry wasn't slamming INFI and was talking about steel in general. All you guys need to calm yourselves and read before posting.

Sitting here * poking your noses over a fence * does nothing to contribute anywhere. Good post RokJok, and the ones who were smart enough to read before replying. I doubt many of you are going to be chopping nails with the prices of Busses' anyway....relax everybody.

Stabber another great link

Don't worry about it Mate.
No need to join anything, get on with your own show.
Everyone can have their opinion without upsetting your side of the fence.
You should be SMART enough to stay in your world and not comment about others in this Forum.
It was a free world last time I looked out the window.

Great reply RokJok, thanks for taking the time. Lots of members want to shoot before lookin' when a Busse critique appears.

So if its a free world, why should he not comment?;)

Seriously, I think people can see now this was a miss-understanding and there is no drama to see here. Why don't we all relax, sit back and the first virtual beer is on me!

He can have his say Taffy, just as I can.

I will poke my nose anywhere I want to (as long as it does not smell to bad)
Dont get upset mate.

This is a really neat test! I'm surprised nobody's picked up their BM, repeated the test, and posted some pics. It seems like a given that edge geometry must be a big factor but if it gives a real indication of toughness I'd love to see some more comparissons. Especially some with some non-stainless.

Not upset at all!:)

Thanks for getting me being Welsh right, so few bother to find out or care. Respect there!

Whats your poison? First is on me!:D

I don't see people getting that worked up.

My comment was perhaps the most colorful... and I kept rather restrained. I had a reason for what I said. If Jerry Hossom feels that my comment is without basis or merit, is out of line, or unfairly shooting the messenger, I suggest he should call me. (831) 325 6917.

have a look at the new thread....Thinned fbm against a 10 penny nail

Read Jerry's thread again. The nail was struck at a 45 degree angle from vertical to induce large lateral forces on the edge. The straight strike in your demo is not equivalent.

There was a added wrinkle to this test. The nail was chopped at a 45 degree angle to try to introduce extreme lateral forces..

Just interesting data... not a slam on INFI.

I agree. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Hossom -- he makes great knives, and I've learned a great deal by reading his posts.

I also appreciate VTW's impressive post -- since I've never had the cojones to chop right through nails with my Busses. That thinned edge did a LOT better than I thought it would!

wait right here....i will go out back and do it again at a 45 degree angle..... i have done this from every angle know to man and never seen that type of chip.... has my edge been damaged ....sure but never to that extreme.... not from nails.

I dont think it was so much the comments Jerry made as some of the off handed comments made by others. :( But, when a discussion of the bestest, toughestest, ubersuper indestructo never have to sharpen again steel, or even the makers of such knives it attracts the same amount of nay sayers. Busse, Strider, Emerson, and yes even Bark River has a rabid following that defend their favorite knives with gusto, and get called cultists for their trouble.

I've chosen one brand to support and collect, and I've had to defend that choice over and over again. Lots of "I dont get it" and "Good ol boys club"

I respect others choices, even if I dont get it. Why cant others respect my choices instead of slamming me for them? And yea, I was "smart" enough to read the whole thread last night, and I still think Hossum closed the discussion way too quick.

Hey General! :) I found an old post from way back where you were getting a BMe! How'd that work out? Still got it?
