I hate American tantos

I own a few Americanized tantos. I don't have any beef with that blade shape. My tantos can perform just about every task my drop points can.

To the OP: what's with the hate? Does a tanto owe you money or something?

I have a few and I find the secondary point useful.

I also like partially serrated blades too.

Seriously. I can't stand how squared off and boxy looking the tip is. I love the traditional tanto but I hate the Americanized version. Is anyone with me for this?

Is that a Blackhawk Be Wharned? I have one of those. I carried it a few times, but it just never grew on me, as it's essentially a folding prison shiv (to me anyway). I'll probably end up selling it.

I too used to lay awake at night seething about the Tanto. Friends and family were worried and suggested maybe I "talk to someone." And then I got one in a Kershaw Blur. The angled corner gits her done and made me a fan. Now I go to bed at night with a :D.

Yes, it's a Be Wharned that has seen a fair bit of use, I've sanded the main bevels to get rid of most of the scratches and crud that had built up there from use...

As for it's practicality, it's a very useful edc blade shape IMO as it is essentially a large folding box cutter- it excels at opening packages of any sort as well as breaking down boxes. Based on owning this knife I'd also like to get a Kershaw Needs Work as well as a Spyderco Yohimbo 2. :D:thumbup:

Lets not get started on blades that owe us money (blades that cost us money) because that thread would never end.

For my use I like a keen point, some tantos are too blunt for me like the CS posted above. OTOH I like my Benchmade 912 Stryker or my Benchmade 760, and I like the looks of the Spyderco Lum fixed blade that they are making again.

Criminy, you just jogged my memory (which is the problem with having a lot of knives, most of which are stored away). I myself have a Needs Work, and it's a decent knife, same shape as the Be Wharned. You make a good point, they do make good envelope openers! :D

Other than that, I don't know, I just never warmed up to them for EDC use, so they stay at home most of the time. All that said, every time I see a pic of the Yojimbo 2, I always think "I should really give the Wharncliffe blade shape another chance!" because that knife is just...there's something about it.

Only a Rambo wannabe would own anything but an Opinel. Knives should only be used for skinning apples, shaving armhair, and being set gently down in the wooded area on a jogging trail for iphone pictures.

You go boy! I laughed my self silly after I read that.

Quoted for truth.

Don't forget that you only take pictures after you sand down any surfaces you think necessary to simulate wear, and find a way to stain up the blade to force a patina so the knife will look used!

Can't stand the bastardized American version. I'm with ya'.

Oh yeah, American Tantos are terrible.
I prefer Canadian Tantos...they look the same, but are more polite. ;)

Honestly, it's my favorite utility blade shape bar none. Straight edges, two tips (one for draw cuts, one for piercing), stout tip strength (depending on the maker, but it's typically the case)... Hard to beat. I like not having to angle myself strangely just to do detail work with a point on a flat surface - I just use the secondary tip.

It's far more useful blade shape than you think, I find it especially useful to have a crazy sharp piercing point on the Be Wharned, plus the straight edge is super simple to sharpen. ;)

As for tantos being blunt tipped, I sharpened the CS voyager's point on my paper wheels and it WAS hypodermic sharp (been used a bit since) and it pierces without fail...

Reshaped the tip on this on a little bit too, now it is nice and pointy:

I prefer the American tanto more obtuse like a CQC 7. Gorgeous blade especially with a little bit of a drop on the spine. Don't really care almost right angle looking tantos like Cold Steel's.

Buddy Christ once more for posterity. :D
