Off Topic I hate this kid.

This is one of the first times I have used any thing to baton. This is at a cabin where the fire wood is stored on the wooden deck. So I was not comfortable using an axe to split the kindling, as I do not want to damage the deck. I was impressed with the Froe and a piece of wood to baton with. It was easy to split the wood with out slamming it on the deck. It never thought about using a knife for this job. I have since used the froe in my shop to split wood as I do not have to swing an axe in my shop.
Kids will be kids and do things we may not think appropriate. Just remember they are not adults yet and some times their decisions show this....

bucktool.. The back drop of that pic is stunning!! WOW!! Do tell.. What part of the world is that?? John

I don’t claim to be any kind of expert bushcrafter. I’ve seen yt vids where the knife reviewer says certain knives, like the brk aurora2, is designed for batoning but chopping is discouraged. In another review, a very well regarded(on other forums) knife afi took a framing hammer to an infi blade to baton dry wood, in order to see how long it would last(about a year.) The only knife I am currently using to baton is a 10” blade made from shock steel(sr7), otherwise I generally use small hatchet or hawk.
I guess you can baton with anything, as long as the force used is proportional to the strength/design of the knife. And if you can live with possibly shortening the lifespan of the instrument. Throwing is bad for any knife except one designed for such. However if I was really hungry, and a grouse unexpectedly jumped in front of me I’d throw whatever was handy and likely to catch it. If it happened to be a buck 119, and it broke, I wouldn’t cry, but use the remaining sharp edges to enjoy my grouse, and thank the creator for my luck. Then find a few smooth rocks and go to work sharpening it into whatever shape(s) worked. Then I’d keep the rocks handy if such an encounter should happen again.

Okay, I just wasted some time in my life that I will never get back by watching that video.

First off, that kid is either a young girl or a very weird little boy. Did any o you notice the long polished finger nails? Some of the speech syntach is very open to question of gender.

As far as the knife breaking, I hope Buck does NOT cover the warrantee if he/she sends it in. Screw him, he's gonna be a Buck hater anyways, why give him more ammo by breaking yet another good knife with his brainless abuse?

I have a a lot to say about this little boy/girl, but it would be very X rated. He needs a trip out the woodshed and some VERY close supervision in the future in an attempt to right the growth in the the wrong direction. But like way too many kids these days, he has way to much disposable income and far too few brains to deal with life in general.

Very young, spoiled, and brainless regardless of gender!

Anyone wonder how such a young person got so many fixed blades? Enough to break up a knife that is not a cheap knife with nary a second thought?

I know I would have nary a second thought of putting this little spoiled boy/girl over my knee and making sure he/she didn't sit down for a while.

On the other note, I really have a very special hate for the idiots in the knife world that started this battening horse manure. I know I'm an old fart, but I've backpacked, canoe and kayak camped, all over this country. Desert, mountains, coastal swamp, and eastern hardwood forest. In 60 years of doing such, I've never battoned a single piece of wood. In ANY weather. But, I have used a folding saw to split and quarter wood with no problem and no risk of breaking anything.

Seems to be a very mislead young person. Someone who has probably bought into all the videos of folks acting like they are urban survivalists that feel the need to prove that every knife must also be part time hatchets. I think the mention as to how callously he destroyed what many would not consider to be an inexpensive knife was correct. Either he has no value to things or has too much money. Regardless, sad to see him destroy a perfectly good 119 trying to make it function like an ax. Like buying a sports car and then whining when you break it off roading. :/

You guys are kind of sad. Ridiculing someone's grandchild and calling their gender into question is not cool whether you are 8 or 80 :(. This is a public forum.

Didn't you do stupid things at that age? Didn't you know people who were confused about gender and sexuality during the "awkward age"?

The kid most likely got it as a gift and did not spend his own money so he didint take care of it. I bet if he spent his own money on it he would have not been batoning a pine log he would have used it as it was intended.

This has nothing to do with gender, just a kid who abused and broke a knife his fingernails suggest he probably didn't do any form of manual work to earn money to buy for himself.

And we all know that kids do stuped things, but that is no excuse for this.

He abused and broke a knife then publicly bashed a proud family owned american business and this action is completely inexcusable.

We've all done stupid things. This is an interesting thread, but I really "hate" the title! I've learned more about the people responding than I have about the kid...

Hyperbole much? LOL.
I just bought 4 Buck knives and had to send back 3 to the factory due to defects immediately.
Where on the scale of "completely inexcusable" does that place "a proud family owned american business"?

in fairness youre kinda the pot calling the kettle black here. you said on page 2.....

He's a kid...wadya expect? Fat kid at that, subject to ridicule because his parents don't care about what he eats.

We've all done stupider things at the same age. At least he likes knives :)

op maybe time to close this thread...nothing useful for anyone can happen from here. your call though....

I think Buck released the froe, to show what you are supposed to Baton wood with.

Brand loyalty is one thing, but I'll never make fun of a kid because they said bad things about a company I like. Kids growing up now unfortunately don't understand things such as privacy, that once something is online it is essentially a permanent record, just because they have an opinion doesn't mean they are obliged to broadcast it globally etc. I have a couple young kids and often wonder how I will introduce and manage their online/cellphone usage when that time comes. These are modern necessary tools for most careers, but I don't like what they are doing to people. I guess all I can do is show them the beauty of the natural world and hope they embrace that (and don't feel the need to document all minutiae).

And yes, we all walked 30 miles through fire to get to school when we were his age and life was so much better back then :)

Edit: I still don't understand this batoning trend.

This kid lol

So buck has no excuse for selling a knife he wanted enough to buy knowing exactly what he was getting ?
The Buck 110 is a pinned knife, I don't care what year it is.
Just because adjustable pivots are common doesn't mean every knife has to have them.
He knew exactly what he was getting so I don't know why he would buy a knife with features or lack there of that he knew he didn't like.

Btw I have a Dozier and love it, but it's no Buck 110 and never will be.
