I have $250 Aussie dollars to spend...

Thanks for all the help mate. I appreciate it a lot.

And to answer your question about sharpening..
I dont have anything to sharpen my knives with yet. I use the sharpener thats built into a kitchen knife block. Its worked well with my cheap SAK's. I havent needed to sharpen any of my bigger knives yet, they hold a decent edge. Let me know how you like the spyderco sharpmaker or whatever it is, I might look into getting one.

Hey, no problem at all, glad I could help. :)

In regards to the sharpener in the kitchen block set, are you talking about the knife steel - that big long metal thing - i think thats what its called. They seemed to work alright like you said, but I think sak will be crazy sharp w/ the sharpmaker. I'll be sure to let you know what I think about it, so then you can decide whether or not its the system for you.
if you got any more questions or such, I might be able to answer them, just shoot me an email, should be on my contact details page

but yeah, glad I could help, but believe it or not, I think you've probably been collecting, if you collect them, knives longer than I have, hell you've probably used them for longer then I have hahaha, when did you start? a bit OT meh.

But I dont want to spend it all on one knife. I would like to get a few knives instead of one expensive one.

I think the miliatry is a bit expensive

Also on that note lachie, what are your other choices going to be?

I started maybe a month or two ago..
I own about 11 knives (all cheapos, 2 are good quality sharp knives though). So I dont own any name brand knives, which will hopefully change soon.

Tuff Cloth and Tuff Glide is good stuff, I use it on all my knives. You can buy a Case knife care kit that comes with a cloth, some Tuff Glide in a needle applicator, a bunch of different cleaning tools, a small Arkansas stone, a lint free polishing cloth and some Flitz metal polish, all in a strong nylon pouch.

Can't remember the cost but it wasn't very much. I think Newgraham might still have them, maybe Ron can get you one. Excellent all round bit of kit.

When you have a bit more money, get yourself a Spyderco Sharpmaker. This will do an excellent job of sharpening all of your knives and a monkey could learn to use it. If you're feeling really rich you might want to look at an Apex Edgepro. :)

Hey gajinoz - which grade of tuff cloth do you use? the marine one or the normal one, does it depend on what the knife is going to be used for, i.e. EDC perhaps normal one, but if its in storage maybe the marine one?

I just use the normal one on all my knives, including those that spend most of their time sitting in the cupboard. I would say that, unless you take your knives fishing regularly, particularly in salt water, the marine variety is a bit of overkill. Still, if you're not worried about a bit of extra cost, what the hell, go get it.

Here is the kit I was talking about:
http://store.tkcknives.com/cakncakit.html

The Tuff Cloth is in a nice resealable bag and there is a similar cloth, but dry, folded up with the bag.

BTW, I know nothing about that store, that's just where I found a good pic.

thanks for the picture, and the marine one will only cost me 1 buck more than the standard, but whatever one I get, you should only need one I would think, as I don't have that many knives.

Gah, cant get anything from Ron yet as Im only 15 and he doesnt want to risk his business.

I completely understand, but I would also like to find a way to get some from him anyway. Perhaps if I asked one of my parents to make an order (they dont care that I own knives) with their paypal account and perhaps a phone call for proof? I dont know, I'll talk to Ron about it :).

yeah talk to your parents about it, they seem all cool with it, hahaha so unlike my parents, but that is a whole other story :D

I think if you get your mum or dad to do it with their paypal, or money order then Ron should be cool with it. see what Ron has to say about it, tell him that your 15 etc..and one of your parents is buying it. I'm not sure if he needs to know that your mum or dad is buying it for YOU, and I don't mean that in a sense of like not telling him, but from a more legal/business point of view, like if he knew that a customer who bought a knife, is then giving it to someone under 18 then if he could get into trouble etc.. Wouldn't think so. A bit like supplying a minor with alcohol - BIG trouble. But yeah ultimately, talk to Ron, he should be able to sort you out.

I'm sure you'll be able to get the stuff you want

Yeah I know what you mean.
He sent me a private message on urbanbunker.com saying how he cant sell knives to someone under 18, and that hes sorry but he cant risk his business etc etc.
I replied asking if theres anything I can do like ask my parents to order them or anything.

hopefully we will be able to work something out :).

EDIT: Update - Ron said it will be fine if one of my parents call him up and purchase the knife. After that "it is their knife and they can do what they want with it" as Ron said.

have you had a look at any of the Benchmades?, there are a few that match your description.

BE WARNED: Australian Customs, in their infinite wisdom, have decreed that the Benchmade Axis Lock mechanism is illegal to import without a permit.

hence why it's getting very hard to find Benchmade knives in Australian stores these days.

I received a Benchmade 615(great knife BTW) from the US, without a permit, three weeks ago with the checked by customs tape around it without issue?

Is this a more recent development?

I had the whole customs thing a while ago, and really its a bti of hit and miss, but as Sambo said, and told me in my threads, and as I was told by another member, its up to you whether or not you want to take the risk of losing a 200 or 300 or whatever dollar knife to customs.

jeez, you blokes will give me a swelled head with all your praise LOL. Thanks guys

Did I miss something? I'm confused
