I have slipped into the abyss.... bought a Rockstead Shin Pic's added :)

Thanks for the replies -

I think the small fuller and hole add interest to the blade. Looks good in my opinion.

best

I just looked up the pricing for this brand and yikes! I don't get it, but more power to you if it's your thing. Enjoy!

I'm not certain, but I've read that it's possibly for machining purposes, similar to the holes on a Sebenzas handle. Or it could just be for aesthetic purposes.

Personally, I think it's for aerodynamics:D

I heard tell that when the blade is swung towards what you are going to cut, it makes the sound of a sad flute :)

Beautiful shots man, amazing looking folders!
Out of my reach at the moment, but it's just a matter of time and saving to get there

Out of curiosity, I just blew at the blade and it actually made a little bit of a whistle noise:D

Thanks for the compliment G2!

Damn this thread. Now I want one.

haha... sorry about that!

I have to say (now that I have had the knife in hand a few days), that it's really making me look at my other higher end production knives differently. The Rockstead is just flat out better than my CRK's, Hinderer's, Strider's, etc. Don't get me wrong, they all have their place and I still really like them all. I will also say for the price of the Rockstead, it had dang well better be better! haha

BTW, I do intend to purchase another Rockstead (probably the KOU) to carry regularly and use within reason. The SHIN will likely get light use around the house, used some but not never abused :). I will be honest the more $$$ I put into something, they more I tend to be "protective" of it. Rather it be a nice sports car, a fine suit, watch, firearm, etc. they all get used/enjoyed but certainly not treated like "beaters".

Having said all that, I can certainly understand why people would look at a $1000 knife that is only used sparingly and with care as a waste of money. But imo whenever you buy something that is obviously high end/high dollar compared to other brands/models you are buying more than just to meet a utilitarian need.

Rex, it's your knife do what you want with it! If you wanted to open the blade, weld the pivot, throw it in the silverware drawer and use it as a butter knife more power to you!!

Congrats on your new toy! Color me jealous :D

Do know that they can be used pretty hard and be perfectly fine. My Chi has seen a lot, I even dropped it from a scissor lift once and had to fix the handle by taking a file to the duralumin. The DLC blade is really hard to scratch up, but the handle will show wear pretty easily from the coating wearing off. I really like Duralumin though, one of my favorite materials. I love the worn-in look of my Chi.

For some, the biggest problem may be resharpening them. I used to be very sophisticated with how I resharpen mine, but it got too tedious and time consuming. Now I just use the ceramic rods from a Sharpmaker freehand and just maintain a microbevel. I still keep them sharp as hell, but there's no need to go crazy if you're good at freehanding. YXR7 responds very well to ceramic and sharpens very fast.

Great info ! THANKS man!

on a side note.... I really enjoy this forum, people here seem super nice and not so quick to put others down (like some gun forums I frequent)

No problem! We also have a 63 page thread dedicated to Rockys, lots of good information in there.

Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Rockstead threads are pretty tame, but never open a thread on Strider, Medford, or some other brands. It gets ugly:D

They definately aren't pumping out tons of knives like other production makers. My Higo is number 452 as of 5/1/15 and Chi was number 214 at 8/6/15.

I show my love through a patch on the sleeve of my Carhartt:D

That looks great Blues! I'd like to do something similar if I ever end up keeping one of these knives. I'm in the market right now for a Chi in ZDP-189, but of course they are out of stock everywhere.

HAHA... I blame Jimmy! (aka Blues Bender)

I was leading a perfectly normal "knife life" until I stumbled into his pied piper Rockstead posts! haha

Well, I took the plunge tonight and ordered the Shin, I'll post pic's when in comes in. It's all you fault Rex! :D

I just received my Shin is YXR7 about two weeks ago, and now I have sold off some knives with the intent of purchasing a Tei...

These knives are unreal.
