If you need help with this stuff, give me a holler. I can probably help you out, and I won't charge ya.

Gee WW, I could have given you answers. You wanted to know how to do it, and only had hypothetical questions.
I've taught quite a few folks geometry and trig in my day. But a forum would not be the place for that. Too one sided and not enough interaction because is not real time.

Doc

Thanks guys!! Im sure ill have questions again, and i dont want to have to pay 20 bucks for each hour im confused LOL It would be nice to discuss it with someone else who understands blades as well so both parties actually understand my end goal LOL the first 15 minutes were me trying to explain to him this had nothing to do with school, and i was just trying to work up specs for a knife im trying to design.

Like you said Doc, this wouldnt be the place, it would take a little bit of time, and here, would require lots of back and forth posting.

Plus i honestly wouldnt feel comfortable posting which primary angles, edge thicknesses etc. im trying to use online because they are not "my numbers"... And while i do have permission to use them, i have not had Dan's permission to publicly post what he spent years figuring out, of course he didnt tell me not to either, but since its not my info to give i kept it hypothetical here.

Dan is very helpful, but he is also a VERY busy man, so i dont like bothering him each time i have a question regarding math. Next time i will talk to one of you by PM, messenger, or over the phone would be better if you didnt mind. I really appreciate the offer guys!!

i ate a whole TAbLESPOOOOON of ghost pepper sauce

after six hours...

i had a whole quart of yogurt...

four day laters...

i found that marble i ate when i was eight years old ;)

that hot

wow

and that is NOT the hottest pepper known these days...

damn...

i swear to god, if you have parasites? tapeworms? this will kill them :D harash :D

flavor? not bad ;D

If it doesn't kill them it'll at least flush them out. And some of your bones.

I remember this time I went to a Mongolian BBQ and I asked for medium heat because I didn't know how hot it would be. I'm not sure if the guy misheard me, accidentally put too much in, or if Mongolians are just F**King insane and have iron guts because I was sweating through the meal and I couldn't finish it because of the fire in my mouth. I spent a good amount of the next day feeling like I was passing lava. And most people think I'm crazy when it comes to spicy food.

So how's everyone doing?

My Custom Tackett is coming back from servicing today. I dropped it on some concrete and blew out the edge. Also, my third BK5 will be coming in the mail today through a trade. Good day.

Also, I was wandering out in our pond and found a Tree Frog, very cool little guys... My Mom is babysitting a little girl from our church so I thought I'd bring it inside. after she had her way with it I took it outside and let it go where I found it, and there was 7 other frogs in about 6 feet from where he was.... I guess I found the Tree Frog Bungalow! :D

And ohhhhhh boy, that poor Tackett.
And nice another BK5?!
I should get one too!

I'm going to be sharpening some co-worker's knives today for a few bucks and a paid lunch :P

Need to order my business cards so I can start offering sharpening services to people!

I'll have pics in about two hours. You can check out my shootout thread if you want: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1184617-Belt-knife-shootout-featuring-BK16-ESEE-4-and-Matt-Tackett-custom

I traded a BK4 for a BK5, funny, I was given a 5 at the gathering, traded it for a 4, and now I'm trading it for another 5! :D

Military be holding me back from having fun with you guys :p.

So how's everyone doing?

Not too shaby, trying my best not to reply to the guy talking about dying in combat because the grind on a knife is off... And then saying he is not even in the military

Im just saying this in case you didnt know, informational purposes only....... Unless you wash your hands VERY well BEFORE handling them, its really not recommended for the frogs health. Their skin is very sensitive and they absorb stuff through their skin. I know people that killed their pet frogs just from holding them. Even the natural oils in human's skin poses a risk to frogs.

But tree frogs are indeed AWESOME little things, especially the red eyed buggers. I know a guy who has a couple, he sometimes takes them out for pictures with gear, but always washes his hands well before, spritzes them with water and keeps the touching to a minimum.

Is that the thread I'm thinking about?
I think I hopped out of that one to never return.
Also speaking of grinds, what degree do you want your RD4 Edge at?
20/22.5/25?
I was thinking 20.

Your talking combined or per side? Im guessing by those numbers per side.....

Whats the lowest the Ken Onion version goes?

130 unused, yes 20 degrees per side, it's what I put on my Beckers.

Also I reread that thread I'm tempted to correct like a mofo but I do not like drama or causing arguments over the internet.
Most of those faulty grinds when modified look excellent yet the things that people are saying are ludicrous.

LMAO i dont mean what does it cost LOL, :D I mean the lowest angle, i just looked it up, it looks like you can vary between 15-30°

17 would be great. If you cant easily go in increments of 1° then 15° per side will work.

Woah Woah Woah son, you want 17 degrees on a beater knife?!
It'll be very thin, I put 17 degrees on my cooking knives lol!
I'll do whatever you want but I'm just letting you know ahead of time if you try using for even like batoning it can easily bur the edge.

Well, were about half way into the drive to blade. Me and the wife are going on to florida after balde and 1066Vik and Murph will be heading back home so we are traveling together but in separate vehicles. Unfortunately my eye injury must of been a little worse than I thought. Its healing well but had some problem focusing and the strain while trying to drive gave a massive headache, one like I have never had before. So, pulled over and my wife is driving. At lease all of the knife work is done. I got up this morning and fixed coffee for me and Eric and he stitched the last M-18 sheath over a bowl of cheerios. Im gonna owe a lot of people a lot of thanks for pushing me to the finish line on this one. Sea you all whos going to blade there. Hope everyone has safe travels.

Be careful bud and don't risk anything.
I'd definitely get it checked out afterwards immediately!

I know bud, i been using knives for a couple days now :D

My comp cutter is a way larger knife and is sitting around 15-17 per side and i chop hardwood and all with it, Havent chipped or rolled the edge one bit yet. The ones used in the comps are even thinner, but i got a "practice" edge on mine so i wouldnt damage it too quickly while i learn.... Its all about HOW you use it. A bad swing is a bad swing, id expect damage on a thinner grind if/when i hit something too HARD of course. But i much prefer them thinner. The performance is better for me. With a good thin grind id definitely use the RD4 more, and with better intentions than i have been LOL With a thick grind... Well batoning leathermans, and chopping brick are not out the question HAHAHA

Frog skin is cool stuff, poison dart frogs transmit the poison through their skin, and Red belly toads have extremely sensitive skin. I'm not really concerned about the skin thing, the frog will most likely be eaten before it has a chance to die from "skin cancer". Thanks for the info, though!

I always make my knives very thin at the edge, because I sit around sharpening all day long....LOL For somebody like you that doesn't have much sharpening equipment I'd think you'd want it thicker, interesting....

HA!
Alrighty bud I'll put a 17 degree grind on it, when will you send that muthertrucker to me?
Maybe I'll have to regrind my ESEE 3/BK2/BK9 to a 17 degrees after a some use.
I think you'll be surprised with how pretty and sharp the edge will be! :p
