I have good taste in a lot of things. I like nice big TVs, sports cars, watches, all kinds of things. NY strip steak. Can't afford ALL of 'em, though. I have to pick and choose.
I like expensive knives, too. I like the look of Damascus steel and oiled wood. I like the idea of exotic steel. But in the real world my chicken breast is sliced with a $15 forged chef's knife, and that's the most common use for knives in my house.
Out of the home, my most common knife use is opening letters and packages with a little Kershaw flipper.
I have a $15 hatchet for chopping wood. It kind of sucks but totally gets the job done. I suppose it's possible for a $300 custom tomahawk to outchop my $15 Jeep branded hatchet... but I keep it sharp and do the work, get the fire going... I might move up to a $45 Gerber if I have enough trouble with the Jeep hatchet.
Now I'm getting ready to do some knife throwing. It looks like there's a range of $20 knives that will do the trick. Even the $15 Cold Steel Sure Balance thrower would be great. I have a couple Bowies I want to pick up but I'm not planning on spending more than $29-50 a blade.
While I enjoy the knives, I guess I have realized I don't need to buy artwork. One of these days, if baby don't need a new pair of shoes anymore, I might buy art instead of tools.
