I like the fancy stuff but don't buy any of it.

Buying attractive toys takes your breath away and nothing else matters?

Really?

I was checking out the Tanto thread, there's some really pretty knives in there. It's a personal choice I guess, but I wouldn't say that owning a pretty knife takes my breath away.

April 15th takes my breath away.

That might change in the future. If you've been in to knives for a long while and getting a knife that you believe is great doesn't get you excited then you might be in the wrong place. I started off small but now I know the differences in knives and I can afford it so I carry and use high end knives almost exclusively because of the enjoyment I get from them. It's not the only joy in my life but it's one of the most constant sources of fun other than my girl :D

"Having something that makes you smile / take your breath away, it's really worthy - nothing else matters." .. it's a general statement ;) something can be anything :)

I find it interesting that you seem to equate "expensive" with "good taste". Not the same thing and often not even related. The nouveau riche often have houses full of very expensive things that would generally be considered of the most appalling taste.

In the case of knives, you can buy relatively inexpensive knives that are certainly tasteful and you can also purchase very expensive knives that are absolutely hideous.

Having said that, "taste" is a somewhat relative term.

When I spend money, I intend to buy good. or something that lasts. My TV is nearly 20 years old and probably still outlives my flatscreen TV's of my friends. It has 0 ms lag, perfect contrast and excellent viewing angle.

On the otherhand in knives, I intend to buy good, perhaps overkill but at least they last and are good... Spyderco's, Busses, Zero Tolerances... My Busse probably outlives me :D

I am 46 and my tenth wedding anniversary is next weekend. I lucked out and found a great one. She doesnt buy me knives or guns. Sharp things kind of scare her. I dont tell her what a couple of my knives cost, I always buy them used. She doesnt understand my attraction to knives and I dont understand her attraction to a forty dollar bottle of shampoo. But we both understand the that the delusional need for a particular shampoo or knife is important to the other person for incomprehensible reasons that seem important to them.

Exactly. :D

You brought up an excellent point, women spend tons of money on things like that $40 bottle of shampoo and don't even blink an eye. That crap adds up quick too I can tell you.

Hell when I was married the EX spent enough money on that crap per month that I could have bought an NMFBM every month at current exchange prices and still had change left.

Women just don't get it if it's not about them or for them, that's just how they are wired and trained by their mothers growing up.

The money they spend on that stuff is gone forever too, might as well burn the money.

At least with Busses they can be sold for as much or more than we paid for them if needed. ;)

There is a time and place for low-end and high-end purchases imo (Rarely am I ever at the high-end). I try to find a happy median of cost vs performance for most things.

I'm content with Walmart type brand green beans, bread, etc at the supermarket.

I don't buy tools at the dollar store. I tend to stick to Craftsman/Husky/Kobalt. No Snap-on, Klein, or Fluke for me.

I don't see myself ever owning a Sebenza or Bud k folding knife. A Delica or Grip are good enough for what I need it them do and are good bangs for the buck imo.

I don't need or want a Busse or Bud K fixed blade. A RAT or Ranger knife is solid knife for the $.

I won't buy a $5 Walmart watch or a $500 X brand. A Casio G shock for $50-75 suits my needs.

To each his/her own.

I am pretty much a middle of the road kinda person also for most things. :)

I had a few less than spectacular relationships, that I didn't realize how lucky I was; that they were over, until a while after they were over (hinsight being much clearer :) )
I fortunate to find the woman I had a relationship with for 32yrs & was married to for 30yrs, at 1st she didn't quite understand the reason for all the different guns & knives, I asked her if she wore the same shoes & used the same purse every day, she said "of course not, different outfits require different accessories" I said same for shooting/hunting & outdoors activities, & that got an "Oh, I understand" she bought me some nice knives over the years & encouraged me to buy some guns so I could go hunting with some friends. She was a keeper unfortunately she passed away last year.

But, I agree with the concept; buy something nice for yourself if you can afford it, that 'someday' might not ever come after my wife's death I bought a couple of what I had considered impractical knives, an art damascus bowie it can be a user but with silver furniture & oosik handle not something I would use every day, but, I do pull it out to look at & enjoy the beauty of the blade.

Enjoy.

Your very ignorant, and I can see why you are single ;)

I have it all, family, friends, kids, money, knives, new cars, 2000sq house.... and most of all would NOT be possible without my wonderfull wife! I am who I am because of her...

But hey if your happy alone with your Striders, I'm happy for you

there are some knives out there that have damascus for relatively cheap prices, some kershaws like the barrage have this. now for me i would rather save up and forgo the cheaper knives and get fewer nicer knives. but that is just me ;)

same here, I can do what I can do also because of her support. At the same time, I decide what I spend what I 'make in my money machine' on. I am grateful to her for letting me do that and every once in a while she acts as my conscience, but not too much to get in the way. Best of all: I'm not married (but the pressure....arghhh)

You just have to try out a couple before you find one you like long enough to keep ;)

Hey Ankerson, I think you missed the point I was trying to make. I wasnt saying women spend money on all sorts of stupid things, I am saying that each partner will have different ideas of the value of something. She doesnt understand why I might want a 100 dollar knife and I dont understand some of the things she thinks are worth 100$. I really dont need a $100 knife, she doesnt need expensive shampoo but we realize that it is important to the other person and that is all we need to know. It is really not a pissing match over who has the more rational or justifiable excuse for luxury commodities. And yes you could get money back for your fancy knives when you sell them but mostly only if you dont use them. And if you dont use them do you really need them? Tonight when I go to bed and curl up next to my wife, I will think of you curling up to your utilitarian, possibly useful, likely overbuilt but definitely not warm strider. But hey whatever works for you, if knives bring you the joy that my family has brought me then more power to you. If knives could make me as happy as she has, I probably would have stuck to knives.

Not ignorant at all, that's how they were every single time, and I mean every time without fail. ;)

Yeah I had all of that too, twice, except for the wonderful wives, don't know what that is, wives yeah, but not wonderful I can tell you. ;)

Now I am better off, have more money and I am much happier.

Divorce is how I spell relief.

No headaches, stress or BS. ;)

You just have to try out a couple before you find one you like long enough to keep ;)

More like a couple hundred or more then maybe.... ROFL :D

Nice edit...

The statement, "Women just don't get it if it's not about them or for them, that's just how they are wired and trained by their mothers growing up." Makes you look ignorant.

I know for a fact my wife is not this way, my mother is not his way.... My wife's mother is not this way.... A lot of my friends wives are not this way.

I do agree some women can be that way, but to act like all of them are is just plain ignorant IMO.

All the ones I have run into tend to be that way I can tell you that. ;)

I am sure there are some good ones out there, but finding that small percentage is not easy.

If I ever find a good one I will let you know, and yeah I would be happy.

When I make a purchase I always make sure that I am within my means…with that said I also always make sure that the money is spent on something that is worth it. I will gladly pay double for something that is handmade or that is simply just built well. There is nothing worse then having a tool fail when you need it most. I also do a little collecting, but for the most part the majority of my knives are users. A lot of work and designing goes into some of the higher-end knives and tool that we buy, and if you ever get the opportunity to use some of them I am sure you will see why some of us choose to spend our money on them.
