I love Spyderco but they disapointed me

When I was around 12 years old I wrote every candy company I knew of and told them a sob story of how I saved my pennies for a candy bar and it was stale when I opened it. A month later the coupons for free candy flooded in. I hear it don't work too good these days though.

Agreed, and none of that other stuff gets replaced free either.

Their competitors replace alot of those items for free. Benchmade does pocket clips and kershaw sends whole sets of screws if you ask them without question. I love spyderco knives but their warranty service is really lacking.

If the manufacturer is willing to send you replacement parts, like pocket clips, for free, then I see that more as them going above and beyond than as an expected norm.

Spyderco CS did send me replacement washers for my Tenacious at no charge. I had disassembled the knife, so I voided the warranty on it (and told them as such). They still took care of me anyway. I'd say that's a win for their customer service (free service on a non-warranty issue).

"Alot...for free"... Please list what besides pocket clips... Omega springs and torsion bars don't count since those breaking and requiring replacement are true warranty issues and Spyderco would surely replace/fix a broken lock.. Spyderco has sent me screws on two occasions no questions asked so that leaves POCKET CLIPS which is being discussed here but hardly "Alot" and more an exaggeration to drive home your belief that their warranty service is lacking.

I wouldn't call it lacking. They make their policies pretty clear and they follow through on commitments. They are not failing to meet a standard, and I think they do an excellent job with warranty work and general sharpening. With that said, I know exactly what you are talking about with KAI and I agree they are awesome when it comes to sending certain parts as virtually no others makers do and it is really convenient, time-saving, and money-saving.

If we're talking about complaining about paying $7 for a pocket clip, don't ever get into the midtech/semi-custom realm where you can pay several times that for a clip.

I haven't seen anybody mention the fact that with some companies the cost of replacement parts is built into the original cost of the knife. That's great for the person that is rough on their knives and may frequently need some replacement parts, but a lot of people will never need parts so they pay the inflated price for nothing.

I've never purchased a knife because of its pocket clip. That's like dating a woman because of her toaster. If you're going to post on the SpyderCo Forum that you don't like their product because they won't send you a free clip, nobody is going to find any credence in anything else you have to say.
I'm in the outlet store twice a week. I'll ask my friend Mrs Glesser if she can make an exception just for YOU Send me a PM with your knife model and a shipping address and I'll pick you up a brand new clip and send it to you along with a brand new box of Kleenex.

The point I'm making is that their competitors do it. I don't see why people are defending that so much. I just think their warranty service is second tier compared to benchmade and kershaw. That said they're no where near as bad as some other companies who send back defective knives or don't even respond to basic email queries. Their competitors doing what they do sets a certain bar.

I think they know that some of their competitors still give away free pocket clips. They must have their reasons to concede that to them.

This is what you said: " I love spyderco knives but their warranty service is really lacking." "Their competitors give a lot of those items for free".

Sooo...I ask you again, what else other than pocket clips do they give away for free? Broken lock parts don't count and Spyderco gives away screws also.

People are responding to you because they think that the idea of their warranty is "lacking" because thy made a decision that they couldnt afford to give away free pocket clips is a bit absurd. Now you backtrack and say "well, Spyderco just second tier"...So what is it? Really lacking or just second tier because of pocket clips or both?

Oh the irony...

Spyderco went from the company that literally innovated the use of pocket clips on folders to supposedly "really lacking" and "second tier" because they don't give away bonus pocket clips like other brands do.

Annual revenue:
KAI Corp: 406 million (41 billion yen 2008)
Benchmade: 30 to 50 million
Fiskars (Gerber): 956 million (2008)
Spyderco: 10 million (current)

While bigger companies may be able to absorb the abuse of some customers from giving away free clips, Spyderco apparently felt that it doesn't make business sense for them. Not to mention that Glesser's three hole design clip fits on countless production folders from other brands through the years including BM and Kershaw models and can be ordered for those non Spydercos.

Spyderco , Buck, and Sog are my favorite Folders as of now with Spyderco way in the lead
And I can understand they can't simply give parts away because some competitors do and 7 bucks each is hardly covering postage and handling.
Free is a nice surprise with anything But I don't expect S&W to send me Free grips for my revolver when/if I crack mine so why should I feel entitled to Free items from Spyderco

Just to make it clear, free pocket clips/hardware isn't really a selling point for me, but I think OP is catching more flak than he deserves.

If many major competitors offer a service that you don't, they have a leg up on you. Doesn't matter if you view it as a positive for Benchmade, Gerber and KAI or as a negative for Spyderco, the net effect is the same. Now as I said, that's not why I buy knives, and Spyderco does so many other things so well that they remain my favorite production company at the moment, but that doesn't mean the OP doesn't have a point.

Just to push an analogy a bit, every place I've ever bought tires offers free lifetime tire rotation. Why should I settle for a place that doesn't, unless they offer me some other advantage?

Better product for your needs?

No company is giving away free clips. Some companies might have the price of those clips written into the cost of knives. Some might pass it on some other way. The fact is someone somewhere is paying for it.

Same thing with lifetime warranties. You pay extra up front for a replacement you might or might not use. There is no free stuff in business.

As far as the OP goes we are pretty much in agreement that if he had a problem under warranty he could send it in for fixing or replacement. Just wanting spares and getting turned down on a request for free ones isn't a problem in my opinion. I don't want them writing the cost of the OP's spares in my next few Spyderco purchases. I want to pay for the knives I receive as much as possible and nothing more.

I agree with Yablanowitz more often than not especially about entitlement issues. Calling names about the people who disagree with him is another sign of immaturity, as are entitlement issues. Many people get older without growing emotionally. Why in his case? Don't know or care.
WOW !!! I is disappointed with this thread it's like talking to 12 year olds. Forget I said anything

:)

When I caught my pocket clip on some fencing and broke it,I called Spyderco and purchased a new one. The thought of them sending me one for free never even crossed my mind. Why should they being as I broke it ?
