I love Spyderco but they disapointed me

No company is giving away free clips. Some companies might have the price of those clips written into the cost of knives. Some might pass it on some other way. The fact is someone somewhere is paying for it.

Same thing with lifetime warranties. You pay extra up front for a replacement you might or might not use. There is no free stuff in business.

As far as the OP goes we are pretty much in agreement that if he had a problem under warranty he could send it in for fixing or replacement. Just wanting spares and getting turned down on a request for free ones isn't a problem in my opinion. I don't want them writing the cost of the OP's spares in my next few Spyderco purchases. I want to pay for the knives I receive as much as possible and nothing more.

I agree with Yablanowitz more often than not especially about entitlement issues. Calling names about the people who disagree with him is another sign of immaturity, as are entitlement issues. Many people get older without growing emotionally. Why in his case? Don't know or care.

:)

I think the entitlement bit is a bunch of HS. OP didn't throw a fit or say anything terribly negative. He's obviously asked about pocket clips multiple times with different manufacturers. When the response you've repeatedly gotten is, "We'll ship you one for free!" it would be hard not to think that's the industry standard.

Lol,believe it or not there was a time when pocket knives didn't even have a pocket clip.:eek::eek:

I'm researching all that this am. I want to see just how accommodating SpyderCo Is or Isn't and I'm giving Lester's bunch a call as well. Lets just put this to the test. Later 'Ill give Gerber a call and see what they have to say. This afternoon I will post the results with Names, Times, Solutions or Fails.

Last year when I got a clip the price included 3-day shipping, a tube of lock-tite and the labor to process my order...so it's not just the clip.

Some companies give replacement parts for free, but most do not. Some use it as a profit center. Sears charged me $80 for a replacement cover that makes my $170 lawn mower into a mulcher. It broke due to poor design, but that made no difference, it was 2 years past the 90 day warranty.

There is no better Company than Spyderco as far as service and product ""PERIOD""..!! Let the 'little boy cry' and maybe his Daddy will fork over the money so that he can buy 2 Clips just to destroy again.! Everybody wants something for nothing now a days as most don't even want to work for what they get and most want the company to have free giveaways but what has he donated for free.?? Most likely nothing ~~ as all he likes to do is cry and bxtch about why he can't get a free Spydie Clip or two.!! Gesh ~~~ get a life.!

I must be doing something wrong. Hundreds of spyderco users in the last ten years and I have never required a replacement clip. And if I did, never would understand why anyone would expect one to be replaced free of charge. Takes time and $ to make those clips, take the call (time=$)/package them/pay to ship them. I would much prefer spyderco put that $ of which can add up in ways many people havnt a clue and put it into more innovative designs & all the other awesome stuff spyderco does that no other company comes close to doing. Thx for all the sharp stuff Golden boys and girls.

So far niether Gerber, Kershaw, Benchmade or SpyderCo have offered to send me Any Parts for Free by simply calling and asking. Gerber wants a Proof of Purchase receipt and they wsnt to look at the knife First. I'm waiting for BenchMade to return the e mail. Kershaw told me that they must detetmine if clip is defective for me to get a 'new' one. Its up to me to get my knife to them for inspection and I get to pay to get it back. SpyderCo (who picked up the phone on 2nd ring) said send them the knife and they will Sharpen it, Condition it, and Installl the clip with new screws for $4.95.
My God $4.95? I'm so upset I'm selling my collection....:D
This free clip thing is a bit understated. The only Free is if its Under Warranty & All 4 manufacturers want to look at the knife to inspect and determine. In all four instances its up to me to mail them the knife at my expense. Not sure what all this hoopla is about sending out free parts. Now I know how counterfiet knives show up with OEM screws bolts locks and clips at the knife show. Hmmm.
Conclusion: This whole thing is Nonsensical drivel. If you send the manufacturer your knife and its found defective the manufacturer will repair it under warranty, even the pocket clip but no one is offering to send you any parts or pocket clips based on a phone call.

There is no free lunch. I have experience nothing but good service from Spyderco. Over the years I have purchased some replacement clips, received replacement screws promptly in the mail and had service work performed. I'm perfectly happy with how the Glesser's run Spyderco and the notion of them running their business like Benchmade, Fiskars or Kai is rather unsettling to me, not that there is anything wrong with how those companies operate.

Time to rotate the knives to Spydercos so I got them all out and cleaned up and sharpened. I noticed a couple had week clips so I got on line and ordered 2. I got an email back saying they would send the clips but I had to pay $14 first. Not a lot of money but when you pay good money for a knife I thing the least they can do is replace a clip when you need one. I know first hand that Benchmade and Gerber do without question and I'm sure other companies too. I was wondering what thoughts you guys had on this?

Did I miss something? When any of my clips are getting weak, I just bend them back. When screws are getting loose, I tighten them.

+1
Would anybody work for free? Would somebody make clips for Spyderco for free or give them free steel, G10, FRN and labor for free?

BenchMade field rep e mailed me back and referred me to a local dealer Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear, a traditional Archery Shop in Arvada Colorado and incidently Central Colorados largest BenchMade Dealer. They are also a SpyderCo Dealer as well. Called them. Very polite professional. Is it broken? No, just loose.... Can you tighten it?.....No. I'm handicapped.....
They (Danny Clum) told me to bring the knife down and if he could he would tighten the pocket clip tension but if he could not then he would be happy to act as my laison and send the knife into the factory shop. If under warranty, Free. If not they take Visa MasterCard Cash and local Check. He, being a Platinum Grade Benchmade dealer for over 15 years was unaware of any Free Clip program Benchmade offers. I told him I read it on the internet. After the laughter stopped He said he could give me an old one if he found one in his shop but he had no idea if it would fit my Grip. Ahem.

Thanks for doing the recon work, Greykilt. Much as I expected. It reminds me of the warranty threads that come up every so often here. When I looked into that, I found no significant difference between Spyderco's policy and most other manufacturers. Much ado about nothing, go figure...

Shocking!

I is disappoint. :D

Greykilt, my experience was different:

http://www.benchmade.com/company/contact_us.aspx

I used this page twice now to request oxide arrow clips and oxide standard clips and turnaround time was about a week both times. Included the screws too. Only reason I give them is that I do not like the standard painted clips...

Now see I think that is terrific. If you have a problem, any problem with a knife, a microwave, a vacume cleaner, whatever and there is a published way to make contact with the products manufacturer, thats a good start. I e mailed BenchMade this am and their territory guy/sales agent/field rep DID return the e mail. He ref'd me to RMSG who BTW was very accomodating.
Your experience was different and obviously better.
I frequent SpyderCo. I'm a registered collector. I'm known on site in the outlet store so I feel more comfortable dealing with them. Because of that relationship I'm able to communicate a little easier than I am with BenchMade. For me SpyderCo is all servicing. But to others maybe not. I own other knives. I use other knives. I collect SpyderCo's. I've never had any problem with their product or their service. They are Colorado as am I and that may have quite a lot to do with it. .... But thats just me.
I guess I became slightly defensive when I read that someone is unhappy with such a quality product made by a family owned Colorado business that gives so much to Golden and the surrounding community because they couldn't flit a free pocket clip. Just kinda sounded ...... oh well.
G...
All that from a guy who GAW's Jarbenzas.
P.S. I called and e mailed General Motors and asked them for a free 2" trailer ball for my Chevy bumper. I heard Ford gives them away. Still waiting.

I think the OP got the point long ago. No need to stay on him IMO.

And Greykilt, stop bothering all of those manufacturers when you didn't even need help !!! They've got real work to do !!! :p:D

I don't think I've paid for a clips, or screws ever. Except with CRK.

Spyderco sent me a Southard clip/screws/loctite. In fact the lady that answered told me they didn't have any southard screws (or parts, it was a rather new knife) HOWEVER she was very sure that another knive's screws were the same. I offered to pay they declined and just sent them for at no immediately cost to me.

Anyways what people are saying is true, sometimes those things are built into the price of the knife. Sometimes they're not. Either way I'd just bend that clip back, or buy a new one.

A clip is a wear item. I don't expect the dealership to replace my brakes on my truck when they are worn and I don't expect a knife company to replace a clip when it is worn either.

Take it off and and rebend it until you have the desired tension.

Very good points. I know I just re-bend mine.

Greykilt, the last time I asked BM for clips was over a year ago... Perhaps your interaction with them today is an indication that they don't offer free clips anymore or at least not as easily? One thing, if I recall, the BM contact page I linked had an option for pocket clip/screw requests...It's not there anymore. Whatever the case, I was really pleased with getting those oxide clips from them those two occasions. As you can tell from my posts here, I am a fan of both brands and I'm good with either stances on clips. Different companies and reasons.

PS: With BM's MAP enforcement (30% artificial price increase) lets hope they still give away clips!

EDIT: God, nevermind, I just saw this on their warranty page:

CARRY-CLIP REQUESTS

If for some reason, your carry-clip gets lost or damaged, and you need a new one, contact us for clip requests. Please include your name, ship-to address, and the knife model(s) so that we can better assist you.

-It doesn't say it's free but Im sure that it still is... And they replaced all of my painted ones when they were neither lost or damaged.
