I love Spyderco but they disapointed me

Interesting thread with many points of view. Thanx for sharing all of your thoughts and thanx for the kind words.

As our Mission Statement says, "We always try to conduct our business in an honest, fair and proper manner". Sometimes others might not think our method is fair or proper, it is surely hard to always please all.

Hi Jlaplant,

Sorry for your disappointment.

We used to make Endura's and Delica's with integral molded clips. When someone broke a clip, we would send them a new knife. Then, We learned that customers were intentionally breaking their clips to get a new knife. Clearly taking advantage of our policy. We solved the problem by charging $10 for a replacement metal clip. We sanded off the old broken clip part, installed a new steel clip with clip screws. Obviously it cost us more than $10 to provide the service. (a service we still provide for the old knives).

We stopped sending clips on a telephone call when we learned that people were getting free clips from us and putting them on all of the non Spyderco knives. Clearly taking adbvantage of our policy. We solved the problem by requiring that they send in their knife so we can determine the problem, or we charged for clips. This works better for us. If you had a problem with a clip, send us the knife explaining your problem. We will take care of you one way or another. If we charge you, it will more than likely be less than our cost.

Hey Eric, very nice assortment you have there.

Lastly Thank you Mr Glesser for staying informed about your customers and being a part of this Forum.

A anyone who thinks that free clips from a company that charges $150 for a knife that has an equivalent knife in the Spyderco line for $60 is a good deal has a very different view of value than I do. ;)

Now that is what I call reasonable even if we don't agree very often. ;)

A select few people take advantage of something and ruin a good thing for the vast majority...this sounds way too familiar...almost overwhelmingly so.

Quite a few years ago, the people abusing these policies really ruined it for everyone, and some really took it to extremes.

Benchmade, Spyderco, and KAI should all be mentioned by name here due to the popularity of their products, and the frequency that their policies were abused. All have had to change at least some of their policies as a consequence. I guess it was a decade and a half ago now and maybe more, but at one point a few jerks were taking advantage of the willingness and good nature of these companies to send out select parts to their customers. Some really crappy individuals would even turn around and sell these parts/items for profit on auction sites, or try to use parts like clips to make a knife appear new that was actually used, and then sell it in a misleading fashion. Intentional abuse of a knife to misuse what is a fair warranty would also happen.

It's unfortunate that some people (and a small minority of owners at that) did this, but I don't fault any maker for policies to combat such abuses. Spyderco's policy here is reactive and probably necessary so they can continue to deliver the best possible price and service possible, as they price their knives very aggressively and a trait I strong associate with their name is "good value".

I couldn't agree more.

I understand Sal's reasoning perfectly, but also, I've never a problem with a single pocket clip (other than not all being to my preference but that's another matter). If a company gives out free stuff, it's never truly 'free.' The original selling price will include things like that in it. If Spyderco raised each of their knives prices by 10%, they could supply more replacement parts free, but would that be worth it to most people?
