I made... something.

Phil, did you ever try any etching acid from Radio Shack for electronics?

ferric chloride pellets = PCB etchant, works great on damascus (pattern welded steel) to enhance the pattern. it can be agressive, so check it frequently & neutralize it with a baking soda solution afterwards.

I can't remember if it's ferric chloride or copper sulfate etchant, but as one of the two (maybe both) gets old, a small introduction of hydrochloric/ muriatic acid will regenerate the etchant's effectiveness... Obviously the details are crucial, I wouldn't want you to make some weird variant of mustard gas....

I do like the idea of combining ferric chloride with white vinegar though.... That sounds like an effective etchant...

And that's a beautiful little piece Philbert. You did a lot with such a little piece. I can't wait for the end product, it'll be a beautiful edc fixed blade...

We did some more forging today and I actually remembered to get some pictures!

As per usual I made something. Not really sure what it is yet. Gonna be a 2 hander, I know that much.

Before and after, with the other half of the O2 steel billet I used:

Phil,
Great work, you are getting your own style and the handle shapes are progressing with your blade.

If you want to etch what I use for all my carbon steels is plain old Apple Vinegar. its cheap at the .99 cent store and I can use it inside the house and just dump it down the drain when done with it. It etches a lot slower than the ferric chord so some times I leave it in over night depending on how deep I want the etching. I don't have to worry about pets or kids etc getting into it.

Just spray with windex and dump Baking soda on when you want to stop the etch.

I use the ferric chloride only for stainless Damascus.

Thanks for the tip, Laurence! I love apple vinegar for patinas. And thanks for the compliments.

I get my ferric chloride online. The newer Radio Shack stuff has hydrochloric in it, which I'd rather avoid. Feeric chloride is pretty benign by itself compared to the acids.

Can't tell from the pictures. I just gotta know. Were you wearing shoes during the blacksmith operation.

You truly the look the blacksmith part, kind of feel like bring my horse to ya to have you check the shoes ya know.

I just know I'd burn the heck out of myself if I was to try something of this nature. I seem to burn myself without effort or even trying.

Haha unfortunately yes, I did have to wear shoes. Check photo 4 for shoe proof! :foot:

Philberto, Volundr incarnate.

Every time you come out to forge you make something interesting, unique, and genuinely original. You got a passion for the craft when you deliberately go for the hammer and anvil even though you have a press at your disposal.

This one is going to be awesome. It's most definitely a hatchling of individuality and function. ;)

I approve of both the dwarven smith phil and his leafblade-- love your pics phil, keep em coming man!

Dang phillll! I wouldnt do anything to that! Maybe put an edge on it and some phiiiiinger grooves and a lanyard. Thats ridiculous man:thumbup: Love it!

... it lays eggs that hatch mini Fishers... lol

How heavy is that mini Anvil?

I got a 2lbs mini Anvil a week or two ago and have used it a bunch in my leather shop. They are so nice for setting copper rivets, making my own really long eyelets and flared tubes. Plus, they are so cute. ;)

This pic somehow reminds me of two things that are closely related to you! :D;)
